Activation of the cholinergic system endows compositional properties to striatal cell assemblies.

Striatal cell assemblies are thought to encode network states related to associative learning, procedural memory, and the sequential organization of behavior. Cholinergic neurotransmission modulates memory processes in the striatum and other brain structures. This work asks if the activity of striatal microcircuits observed in living nervous tissue, with attributes similar to cell assemblies, exhibit some of the properties proposed to be necessary to compose memory traces. Accordingly, we used whole cell and calcium-imaging techniques to investigate the cholinergic modulation of striatal neuro

Delay-embedding for recurrence in optical reservoir computing.

Time-delay embedding is a prominent method in neural networks to improve the performance of predictions of the dynamics of nonlinear systems. Applied to reservoir computing, a recurrent machine learning model in which the output weights are trained only, an improved prediction performance for a broader range of hyperparameters can be realized. Here, we present an optical implementation of reservoir computing on the basis of a spatial light modulator. In addition to the high parallelism of the optical setup and the fast processing capabilities with scalable numbers of neurons, a recursive casca

Early Target Object Prediction in Action Observation.

Knowledge-Based Deep Learning for Time-Efficient Inverse Dynamics.

Accurate understanding of muscle activation and muscle forces plays an essential role in neuro-rehabilitation and musculoskeletal disorder treatments. Computational musculoskeletal modeling has been widely used as a powerful non-invasive tool to estimate them through inverse dynamics using static optimization, but the inherent computational complexity results in time-consuming analysis. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-based deep learning framework for time-efficient inverse dynamic analysis, which can predict muscle activation and muscle forces from joint kinematic data directly while no

Rapid, interpretable data-driven models of neural dynamics using recurrent mechanistic models.

Obtaining predictive models of a neural system is notoriously challenging. Detailed models suffer from excess model complexity and are difficult to fit efficiently. Simplified models must negotiate a tradeoff between tractability, predictive power, and ease of interpretation. We present a modeling paradigm for estimating predictive, mechanistic models of neurons and small circuits that navigates these issues using methods from systems theory. The key insight is that membrane currents can be modeled using two scalable system components optimized for learning: linear state space models, and nonl

Application of deep learning towards automated electromyographic wave classification for neuromonitoring in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neuromonitoring-that is, recording of electromyographic signals-is used routinely during (para)thyroid surgery. Surgeons label selected signals to document nerve identity, body side, and time point of stimulation (before or after resection), with a mislabelling rate of 20%. For the purpose of an automated error alert of mislabelled electromyographic signals, the authors developed a multitask one-dimensional convolutional neural network. METHODS: Raw intraoperative neuromonitoring data were corrected using MIONQA software. Labelled electromyographic signals were extr

Dynamic reconfiguration and transition of whole-brain networks in patients with MELAS revealed by a hidden Markov model.

OBJECTIVES: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare maternally inherited disease. The neuropathologic mechanisms and neural network alterations underlying stroke-like episodes (SLEs), a recurrent paroxysmal clinical event, remain unclear. The hidden Markov model (HMM) can detect profound alterations in neural activities across the whole-brain network. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We initially collected data from a prospective cohort from 2019 to 2024. The confirmed diagnosis of MELAS was conducted through genetic testing or a muscle biopsy. He

Comparative study of respiratory sounds classification methods based on cepstral analysis and artificial neural networks.

In this paper, we investigated and evaluated various machine learning-based approaches for automatically detecting wheezing sounds. We conducted a comprehensive comparison of these proposed systems, assessing their classification performance through metrics such as Sensitivity, Specificity, and Accuracy. The main approach to developing a machine learning-based system for classifying respiratory sounds involved the combination of a technique for extracting features from an unknown input sound with a classification method to determine its belonging class. The characterization techniques used in

Application of Artificial Intelligence in Early Diagnosis of Spontaneous Preterm Labor and Birth.

This study reviews the current status and future prospective of knowledge on the use of artificial intelligence for the prediction of spontaneous preterm labor and birth ("preterm birth" hereafter). The summary of review suggests that different machine learning approaches would be optimal for different types of data regarding the prediction of preterm birth: the artificial neural network, logistic regression and/or the random forest for numeric data; the support vector machine for electrohysterogram data; the recurrent neural network for text data; and the convolutional neural network for imag

Distributed neural codes of the 3D position in the marmoset frontal cortex and hippocampus.

The neural encoding of the animal's position is essential for spatial navigation and cognition, yet the three-dimensional (3D) positioning system in the primate brain remains poorly understood. By combining wireless multi-channel recordings from common marmosets with a free-forging task in the 3D space, we identified 42% and 24% neurons in the frontal cortex (FC) and hippocampus (HPC) as place cells, respectively. Place cells in FC and HPC encoded the 3D position with similar spatial information, sparsity and stability, and exhibited stronger functional connections than non-place cells. Notabl

Deep learning methodology for predicting time history of head angular kinematics from simulated crash videos.

Head kinematics information is important as it is used to measure brain injury risk. Currently, head kinematics are measured using wearable devices or instrumentation mounted on the head. This paper evaluates the deep learning approach in predicting time history of head angular kinematics directly from videos without any instrumentation. To prove the concept, a deep learning model was developed for predicting time history of head angular velocities using finite element (FE) based crash simulation videos. This FE dataset was split into training, validation, and test datasets. A combined convolu

Machine Learning in Venous Thromboembolism-Why and What Next?

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, despite advances in imaging and anticoagulation. VTE arises from diverse and overlapping risk factors, such as inherited thrombophilia, immobility, malignancy, surgery or trauma, pregnancy, hormonal therapy, obesity, chronic medical conditions (e.g., heart failure, inflammatory disease), and advancing age. Clinicians, therefore, face challenges in balancing the benefits of thromboprophylaxis against the bleeding risk. Existing clinical risk scores often exhibit only modest discrimination and calibra

Voice-Based Early Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease Using Spectrogram Features and AI Models.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that significantly affects motor functions, including speech production. Voice analysis offers a less invasive, faster and more cost-effective approach for diagnosing and monitoring PD over time. This research introduces an automated system to distinguish between PD and non-PD individuals based on speech signals using state-of-the-art signal processing and machine learning (ML) methods. A publicly available voice dataset (Dataset 1, 81 samples) containing speech recordings from PD patients and non-PD individuals was used for

Diagnosis of Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy From Fluorescein Angiography Using Deep Learning.

PURPOSE: To differentiate polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) from choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and to determine the extent of PCV from fluorescein angiography (FA) using attention-based deep learning networks. METHODS: We build two deep learning networks for diagnosis of PCV using FA, one for detection and one for segmentation. Attention-gated convolutional neural network (AG-CNN) differentiates PCV from other types of wet age-related macular degeneration.
