Highly potent radical scavenging-anti-oxidant activity of biologically reduced graphene oxide using Nettle extract as a green bio-genic amines-based reductants source instead of hazardous hydrazine hydrate.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is relied upon to be the most promising candidate for high-proficiency. Hydrazine is the most conventional efficient reducing agent that has been frequently used for reduction of graphene oxide, however, it is not environmentally safe due to its toxic nature, causing unsatisfactory defects on the basal plan of GO. Therefore, employing green and efficient reducing agents from natural sources like plant extracts has become the research interest for obtaining high quality reduced graphene oxide sheets in recent years. Here a one-step, easy, cost-effective and green sy…

A reductant-resistant and metal-free fluorescent probe for nitroxyl applicable to living cells.

Nitroxyl (HNO) is a one-electron reduced and protonated derivative of nitric oxide (NO) and has characteristic biological and pharmacological effects distinct from those of NO. However, studies of its biosynthesis and activities are restricted by the lack of versatile HNO detection methods applicable to living cells. Here, we report the first metal-free and reductant-resistant HNO imaging probe available for use in living cells, P-Rhod. It consists of a rhodol derivative moiety as the fluorophore, linked via an ester moiety to a diphenylphosphinobenzoyl group, which forms an aza-ylide upon rea

Enhancement of interferon-gamma-induced differentiation of human monoblastic leukemia U-937 cells by cAMP-inducing agents.

The effects of combinations of interferons (IFNs) and cAMP-inducing agents on the induction of differentiation of human monocytic leukemia U-937 cells were examined. IFN-gamma induced nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reducing activity of U-937 cells in a dose-dependent manner, while cAMP-inducing agents such as cholera toxin, prostaglandin E1, forskolin, and isoproterenol only marginally induced NBT reducing activity. However, they all synergistically increased IFN-gamma induction of NBT reducing activity. Cholera toxin was the most potent of the cAMP-inducing agents. Combination effects of IFN-ga

Intensive therapies for pediatric obesity.

The intensive therapies that have been used to treat pediatric and adolescent obesity include very-low-calorie diets, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery. None of these approaches have been reported in sufficient numbers of subjects who have taken part in well-designed experiments with long-term follow-up to demonstrate convincingly their true value for the treatment of pediatric obesity. As the potency of the therapy increases, so does its possible adverse consequences. Of the intensive approaches, only bariatric surgery can be said to have even small studies supporting its ability to indu

Iron(III)-(1,10-Phenanthroline) Complex Can Enhance Ferrate(VI) and Ferrate(V) Oxidation of Organic Contaminants via Mediating Electron Transfer.

Recent research has primarily focused on the utilization of reductants as activators for Fe(VI) to generate high-valent iron species (Fe(IV)/Fe(V)) for the degradation of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs). However, a significant drawback of this approach arises from the reaction between reductants and ferrates, leading to a decrease in oxidation capacity. This study introduces a novel discovery that highlights the potential of the iron(III)-(1,10-phenanthroline) (Fe(III)-Phen) complex as an activator, effectively enhancing the degradation of EOCs by Fe(VI) and augmenting the overall oxidati

Electrochemical Investigation of Iron-Catalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization.

Use of iron-based catalysts in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is very interesting because of the abundance of the metal and its … added ligands. It is shown that amine ligands form stable iron complexes, whereas phosphines act as reducing agents. eATRP of MMA catalyzed by FeCl3 was investigated in different conditions. In particular, the effects of temperature, catalyst concentration, catalyst-to-initiator ratio, halide ion excess and added ligands were investigated. In general, polymerizat …

Substituent effects of the phenyl ring at different positions from the α-carbon of TEMPO-type nitroxide.

Nitroxides are known to undergo oxidation, reduction, and radical scavenging reactions due to their stable radicals. Nitroxides have a wide range of applications due to their reactivities, including radical detecting probes and catalysts. Because nitroxides are easily reduced by ascorbate, a reducing agent, in biological applications, it is critical to control their reactivity to use them as a probe to trace the target reaction. On the other hand, the phenyl group, which is present in many functional organic molecules, is useful for controlling the electronic and steric effects. However, there

Enhancement of Cr(VI) reduction by indigenous bacterial consortia using natural pyrite: A detailed study to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the highly efficient and possible sustainable system.

Pyrite was applied to Cr(VI) bioremediation as an inorganic electron donor due to the ability to provide electrons, while the role of pyrite in Cr(VI) bioremediation where organics as electron donors remains unknown. Herein a pyrite-based Cr(VI) bioreduction process in the sediment system containing lactate was demonstrated to be effective to detoxify Cr(VI): over 2200 mg L-1 Cr(VI) was continuously removed within 210 h with high reactivity (10.5 mg/(L·h)) all along. High-throughput 16S rDNA gene sequencing indicated that the pyrite could shape a functioning community that electrochemically ac

Can reducing cosmetic substances help prevent chromate contact allergy?

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis caused by Cr(VI) is often severe and difficult to treat. Therefore, primary prevention is a main goal but, secondary prevention can be valuable to ease the symptoms or prevent relapse of Cr(VI) dermatitis when sensitization has occurred. Barrier creams have been tried for many chemical substances, but until now there is no successful barrier cream against Cr(VI). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the ability of reducing agents to transform Cr(VI) into Cr(III) in an experimental situation, in order to find suitable chemicals to investigate for possible use in a…

Hypertension and its management in the elderly.

Many trials focused on cardiovascular outcomes demonstrate that reduction in blood pressure to levels below 140/90 mm Hg reduce cardiovascular events including stroke and myocardial infarction. There are very few such trials, however, in the elderly cohort, especially among those aged 70 and older. In the few outcome trials that have been completed in this older age group, systolic blood pressures in the range between 140 and 149 mm Hg demonstrate a clear reduction in cardiovascular events. Moreover, among the subgroup that has a vasculature that allows a systolic pressure to go below 140 mm H

Emerging aspects of pharmacotherapy for obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Obesity is a multifactorial, chronic disorder that has reached epidemic proportions in most industrialized countries and is threatening to become a global epidemic. Obese patients are at higher risk from coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, cancers, cerebrovascular accidents, osteoarthritis, restrictive pulmonary disease, and sleep apnoea. In particular, visceral fat accumulation is usually accompanied by insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, high uremic acid levels, low high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholestero

The optimal method for peroxydisulfate quenching: A comparison of commonly used reductants.

Peroxydisulfate-based advanced oxidation process has drawn increasing interest recently. Quenching the residual peroxydisulfate is essential for the accurate measurement of the concentration of target pollutants. However, it was rarely discussed which reductant is best for peroxydisulfate quenching. In this study, how the quenching of peroxydisulfate by four commonly used quenchers (methanol, ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfite) affected the concentration of carbamazepine was investigated. Sodium sulfite reacted with carbamazepine directly, with the highest removal rate up to

Brain protection: physiological and pharmacological considerations. Part II: The pharmacology of brain protection.

Neuroprotective agents may exert their effect by reducing cerebral oxygen demand (CMRO2), increasing cerebral oxygen delivery, or by altering ongoing pathological processes. Barbiturates provide neuroprotection by reducing the CMRO2 necessary for synaptic transmission while leaving the component necessary for cellular metabolism intact. Isoflurane may exert a neuroprotective effect by a similar mechanism but its efficacy is likely less than that of barbiturates due to adverse effects on cerebral blood flow. Lidocaine reduces CMRO2 by affecting both cellular metabolic processes and synaptic tra

Implications of sucralfate-induced ulcer healing and relapse.

A review of the literature indicates that sucralfate attains a healing rate of 79 percent for duodenal ulcer and 75 percent for gastric ulcer in four and eight weeks, respectively, rates not different from those reported for cimetidine and ranitidine. Meta-analyses show that, whereas cigarette smoking significantly affects duodenal ulcer healing by acid-reducing agents, the healing rates of smokers and non-smokers treated with sucralfate are indistinguishable, suggesting an inherent advantage through the underlying mechanisms of the drug. Pooling reports in the literature indicates that the 12…

Sedation in traumatic brain injury.

Several different classes of sedative agents are used in the management of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). These agents are used at induction of anaesthesia, to maintain sedation, to reduce elevated intracranial pressure, to terminate seizure activity and facilitate ventilation. The intent of their use is to prevent secondary brain injury by facilitating and optimising ventilation, reducing cerebral metabolic rate and reducing intracranial pressure. There is limited evidence available as to the best choice of sedative agents in TBI, with each agent having specific advantages and di

Preparation of ultrafine and highly loaded silver nanoparticle composites and their highly efficient applications as reductive catalysts and antibacterial agents.

The size of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and loading amount of Ag NPs onto their substrate/carrier are two key factors for their efficient applications. Herein, we present a facile method for in situ synthesizing ultrafine and highly loaded Ag NPs on the surface of tannin-coated catechol-formaldehyde resin (TA-CFR) nanospheres. TA-CFR nanospheres act as green and highly efficient reducing agents for converting silver ions (Ag+) into Ag NPs, and the size of resultant Ag NPs is only ∼ 7.5 nm, and the Ag NPs loading capacity of TA-CFR is as high as 61.5 wt%, both of which contribute to the very …

Prevention or reversal of atherosclerosis: review of current evidence.

Treatment with lipid-reducing agents is associated with reduced morbidity and mortality from coronary heart disease. Such treatment appears to work at the level of the atherosclerotic lesion, causing stabilization, slowed progression and, in some cases, regression of lesions. Morbidity and mortality studies of cholestyramine and gemfibrozil treatment have shown that a reduction of lipid levels was associated with reduced mortality from coronary heart disease; niacin treatment has been shown to have long-term effects on reducing cardiovascular mortality. Angiographic studies have documented tha…

Effects of cross-linking agents on hydroxyproline release and root caries lesion size: Systematic review and network meta-analysis of in vitro studies.

A promising approach for managing root caries is the use of cross-linking agents to stabilize collagen. However, despite testing various natural and synthetic agents in vitro, their efficacy remains uncertain. The aim of this review was to examine which cross-linking agent performs better in reducing root caries lesion depth and the release of hydroxyproline, which is a marker of collagen degradation. Studies evaluating the impact of cross-linking agents on dentin were included, while studies performed on enamel surface/cell cultures and studies evaluating collagenase inhibitors were excluded,
