Ocular morbidity among children (aged 6-18 yr) of the tribal area of Melghat, India: A community-based study.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Most of the ocular morbidities among school children are preventable or treatable. Melghat, a difficult to access, hilly, forest, tribal area with poorly developed infrastructure in the Amravati district of Maharashtra. Scarcity of ophthalmologists and low health-seeking behaviour of tribal people contributes to the high burden of ocular morbidity. Given the lack of published studies on the ocular morbidity among children in Melghat, outreach programmes are essential to diagnose and treat visual impairments promptly. The objective was to determine the prevalence of ocula

[Differentiation between dyslexia and ocular causes of reading disorders].

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is defined as a reading and/or writing disability persisting after exclusion of organic causes. Studies show that ocular disorders, especially small refraction errors, hypoaccommodation and symptomatic heterophoria, are often not detected or treated in cases of reading and/or writing problems which were otherwise diagnosed as dyslexia. METHODS: We evaluated the data of patients referred to our department from December 1997 to March 2000 with the diagnosis of dyslexia. RESULTS: We found ocular disturbances in 28 (84.8%) out of 33 children, 26 (78.8%) showed improved readi

A look at literature on myopia over the past 25 years: a personal review.

Over 100 years ago, Professor Foucher of Université Laval in Montreal (Canada) suggested that myopia was the result of an interaction between genetics and the visual environment, implying a Darwinian response to our changing world. His words are still relevant today. Over 30,000 articles have been published since he spoke then. Have his questions been answered? What has been learned from this body of research, particularly in the last 25 years? The purpose of this paper is to review the scientific evidence on myopia and to give clinical significance to the results and conclusions presented. It

Comparison of two treatments for dry eye disease after corneal refractive surgery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

There are no international or Chinese guidelines for the management of dry eye disease that develops after corneal refractive surgery. Sodium hyaluronate is the first-line therapy for dry eye diseases but is not sufficient to treat severe conditions. This study aimed to compare three-month outcomes following treatment of dry eyes after corneal refractive surgery with 3% diquafosol against those with 0.1% sodium hyaluronate. In a retrospective study, 118 patients were treated with 3% diquafosol sodium six times/day (DQS cohort, n=118 eyes) and 184 patients were treated with 0.1% sodium hyaluron

Ocular abnormalities in children from a Malaysian school for the deaf.

The prevalence of ocular abnormalities was studied in 165 children from a Malaysian school for the deaf. Ninety-five children (57.6%) had one or more ocular abnormalities. Rubella retinopathy was the commonest form of ocular abnormality (35.2%). Refractive errors were found in 23 children (13.9%). Refractive errors in the rubella group were significantly more common than in the non-rubella group of deaf children (p < 0.001) (chi 2 test). Thirteen children had congenital anomalies causing significantly impaired vision. Ophthalmological examination of deaf children helps in the detection of case

Afocal magnification does not influence chick eye development.

In defocus-induced ametropia experiments, retinal blur circles are a likely source of information as to the magnitude but not the sign of the defocus. However, magnification (and minification) produced by the lenses may be a cue. In this study, 1-day-old broiler chicks (N = 13) were treated monocularly for 7 days with special goggles containing approximately afocal iseikonic lenses which were designed to produce 10% retinal image magnification. This is a little less than the magnification produced by +10 D defocusing lenses used to produce about 10 D of hyperopia in earlier work. Intraocular d

Circadian rhythms, refractive development, and myopia.

PURPOSE: Despite extensive research, mechanisms regulating postnatal eye growth and those responsible for ametropias are poorly understood. With the marked recent increases in myopia prevalence, robust and biologically-based clinical therapies to normalize refractive development in childhood are needed. Here, we review classic and contemporary literature about how circadian biology might provide clues to develop a framework to improve the understanding of myopia etiology, and possibly lead to rational approaches to ameliorate refractive errors developing in children. RECENT FINDINGS: Increasi

Acute-onset esotropia and diplopia associated with transient hyperopic shift in a child with newly diagnosed diabetes.

We report a rare presentation of acute-onset diplopia and esotropia in a child as a manifestation of transient diabetes-related refractive change. A 9-year-old girl presented with sudden diplopia and large-angle esotropia shortly after initiation of insulin therapy for newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus. Cycloplegic refraction revealed a marked bilateral hyperopic shift, significantly exceeding her previously documented refractive error. Ocular alignment demonstrated a substantial accommodative component to her esotropia, with good visual acuity in both eyes and no neurologic signs. Over

Corneal Refractive Surgery Considerations in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric eating disorder characterized by body mass index (BMI) ≤ 18.5, fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of body weight. With increasing rates of myopia, there is a population of patients who concurrently develop AN and may seek corneal refractive surgery. This study reviews the ophthalmic manifestations of AN and provides preliminary guidelines for patients with AN undergoing corneal refractive surgery. The literature search was conducted through the PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases through June 2, 2024, for publications detailing the ocular m

Accommodation-based liquid crystal adaptive optics system for large ocular aberration correction.

According to ocular aberration property and liquid crystal (LC) corrector characteristics, we calculated the minimum pixel demand of the LC corrector used for compensating large ocular aberrations. Then, an accommodation based optical configuration was introduced to reduce the demand. Based on this an adaptive optics (AO) retinal imaging system was built. Subjects with different defocus and astigmatism were tested to prove this. For myopia lower than 5D it performs well. When myopia is as large as 8D the accommodation error increased to nearly 3D, which requires the LC corrector to have 667 x
