The Future of Contract Research Organizations in Dermatology and Aesthetic Research.

OBJECTIVE: Dermatology and aesthetic medicine has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by industry-sponsored research performed by clinical investigators. Contract research organizations (CROs) play an important role to ensure clinical trials are run efficiently, ethically, and according to Good Clinical Practice. An advisory group of dermatologists and aesthetic researchers was assembled to obtain feedback about CRO experiences for developing a "next-generation" specialty CRO for dermatology and aesthetic medicine. METHODS: Experienced dermatologists and aesthetic physician

High false alarm rates on a vigilance task may indicate recreational drug use.

Neuropsychologists need more sensitive methods to detect and measure recreational drug use in both research and clinical settings. In a study comparing the sensitivity of information processing tasks and neuropsychological instruments to detect early HIV-related cognitive decrements, 18 of 129 subjects tested positive for recreational drugs. Sixteen of these 18 subjects had elevated false alarm rates on one of the information processing tasks, the vigilance task. Another 45 subjects who tested negative for recreational drugs also had elevated false alarm rates. Neuropsychological measures of p

Serum stromal cell-derived factor-1 concentrations are increased and associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children with obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) is a newly discovered small molecule adipocytokine, and research has shown that it is closely related to the occurrence and development of obesity. However, there are currently few research reports on SDF-1 in childhood obesity and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and this study aims to explore the relationship between SDF-1 and obesity related indicators in obese children. METHODS: Serum SDF-1 concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical and biochemical data were collected, such as body mas

Healthy and pro-inflammatory gut ecology plays a crucial role in the digestion and tolerance of a novel Gluten Friendly™ bread in celiac subjects: a randomized, double blind, placebo control in vivo study.

Gluten Friendly™ (GF) is a new gluten achieved through a physicochemical process applied to wheat kernels. The goal of this research was to assess the in vivo effects of Gluten Friendly™ bread on celiac gut mucosa and microbiota. In a double-blind placebo-controlled intervention study, 48 celiac disease (CD) patients were randomized into 3 groups to eat 100 g of bread daily, containing different doses (0; 3 g; 6 g) of GF for 12 weeks. The small-bowel morphology (VH/CrD), intraepithelial densities of CD3+, celiac serology, MUC2, CB1, gut permeability, proinflammatory cytokines, gluten in stools

Psychosocial variables associated with the exceptional survival of patients with advanced malignant disease.

This study identified psychosocial variables associated with the exceptional survival of nine cancer patients diagnosed as terminal. During open-ended interviews, subjects described their behaviors and emotions following the onset of disease and articulated personal explanations for their survival. Despite the methodological limitations inherent in this type of research, the similarity of the subjects' responses was compelling. All subjects believed that there was a direct relationship between the outcomes experienced and their psychological states. They remained confident that they would not d

A model of risk for perinatal posttraumatic stress symptoms.

Existing research suggests that childbirth may be a significant trigger of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The current study examined whether subjective birthing experiences and objective childbirth characteristics mediated the association between predisposing psychosocial factors measured during pregnancy (e.g., fear of childbirth, history of trauma, and social support) and PTSS during the postpartum period. Women were recruited during pregnancy from a large Midwestern hospital. Symptoms of posttraumatic stress, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression, as well as PTSS-relate

A survey of the methods developed in the National Coal Board's pneumoconiosis field research for correlating environmental exposure with medical condition.

The correlation of the medical and environmental data (i.e. the derivation of the dosage-response relationship) in a study such as the National Coal Board's Pneumoconiosis Field Research (P.F.R.) is subject to many complicating factors compared with the more conventional types of biological assay. Several methods have been developed within the Research to overcome these difficulties, and the new procedures are described. Each is concerned with the estimation of the direct relation between the radiological abnormality associated with simple pneumoconiosis and some single measure of the past haz

Personality traits as correlates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide completions: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Involvement of personality traits in susceptibility to suicidality has been the subject of research since the 1950s. Because of the diversity of conceptual and methodological approaches, the extent of their independent contribution has been difficult to establish. Here, we review conceptual background and empirical evidence investigating roles of traits in suicidal behaviors. METHOD: We selected original studies published in English in MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases, focusing on suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, or suicide completions, and using standardized personality measures

Naltrexone-bupropion combinations do not affect cocaine self-administration in humans.

The FDA has not yet approved a pharmacotherapy for cocaine use disorder despite nearly four decades of research. This study determined the initial efficacy, safety, and tolerability of naltrexone-bupropion combinations as a putative pharmacotherapy for cocaine use disorder. Thirty-one (31) non-treatment seeking participants with cocaine use disorder completed a mixed-design human laboratory study. Participants were randomly assigned to the naltrexone conditions (i.e., 0, 50 mg/day; between-subject factor) and maintained on escalating doses of bupropion (i.e., 0, 100, 200, 400 mg/day; within-su

Are normal decision-makers sensitive to changes in value contrast under uncertainty? Evidence from the Iowa Gambling Task.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) developed by Bechara et al. in 1994 is used to diagnose patients with Ventromedial Medial Prefrontal Cortex (VMPFC) lesions, and it has become a landmark in research on decision making. According to Bechara et al., the manipulation of progressive increments of monetary value can normalize the performance of patients with VMPFC lesions; thus, they developed a computerized version of the IGT. However, the empirical results showed that patients' performances did not improve as a result of this manipulation, which suggested that patients with VMPFC lesions performed my

The relevance of associative learning pathways in the development of obsessive-compulsive washing.

The relevance of associative learning in the development of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) was investigated in a group of 23 OCD patients whose main concern was washing and 23 age and sex matched control subjects who did not have OCD. OC washers completed an origins instrument based on Menzies and Clarke's (1993, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 31, 355-365) Origins Questionnaire (OQ) for the phobic disorders. Control subjects completed a modified version of this measure designed to give a comprehensive picture of their experiences with relevant contamination-related stimuli. In general, t

Development and Integration of Community Advisory Boards to Inform Research on the Impact of Structural Racism on Racial/Ethnic Disparities in End-Stage Kidney Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Community Advisory Boards (CABs) represent a critical methodological approach to center research on the experiences of patients and families and minimise power inequities between 'researcher' and 'subject'. This approach can be especially important to inform work related to structural racism and racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare. Herein, we report the value and challenges of integrating CABs into ongoing research on structural racism and racial and ethnic disparities in care for adults with end-stage kidney disease as well as strategies to maximise impact. METHODOLOGY:

Non-pharmacological Considerations in Human Research of Nicotine and Tobacco Effects: A Review.

UNLABELLED: Human research of nicotine and tobacco effects demonstrates that non-pharmacological factors may systematically affect responses to administered substances and inert placebos. Failure to measure or manipulate these factors may compromise study reliability and validity. This is especially relevant for double-blind placebo-controlled research of nicotine, tobacco, and related substances. In this article, we review laboratory-based human research of the impact of non-pharmacological factors on responses to tobacco and nicotine administration. Results suggest that varying beliefs about

Brain Fog and Cognitive Dysfunction in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: An Evidence-Based Review.

The term "brain fog" has long been used both colloquially and in research literature in reference to various neurocognitive phenomenon that detract from cognitive efficiency. We define "brain fog" as the subjective experience of cognitive difficulties, in keeping with the most common colloquial and research use of the term. While a recent increase in use of this term has largely been in the context of the post-coronavirus-19 condition known as long COVID, "brain fog" has also been discussed in relation to several other conditions including mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress

Individuals With Prediabetes Display Different Age-Related Pathophysiological Characteristics.

CONTEXT: Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) are highly pathophysiologic heterogeneous prediabetes conditions that can occur in all age groups, from youth to elderly people. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether distinct age-related phenotypes exist among individuals with IFG or IGT. RESEARCH DESIGN: 479 young (aged 18 to 35 years), 699 adult (45 to 55 years) and 240 older (≥65 years) subjects underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). From the OGTT results, the participants were grouped as follows: young age and normal glucose tolerance (NGT), adult age and N

Adolescent boys with autism spectrum disorder growing up: follow-up of self-reported sexual experience.

Systematic research on sexual development in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains scant, notwithstanding the often-suggested relation between ASD, atypical, and even sexually offensive behaviours. This study compared follow-up data related to lifetime sexual experience (LTSE) in a homogeneous group of adolescent boys with ASD (n = 30), aged 16-20, with a matched group of boys in the general population (n = 60). Most boys in the ASD and control groups reported masturbation and having experienced an orgasm. The proportion of boys with ASD that had no partnered sexual experienc
