Airbnb and neighborhood crime: The incursion of tourists or the erosion of local social dynamics?

The proliferation of internet-based home-sharing platforms like Airbnb has raised heated debates, with many in the general public believing that the presence of Airbnb listings can lead to an increase in crime and disorder in residential neighborhoods. Despite the importance of this debate to residents, policymakers, and other stakeholders, few studies have examined the causal linkage between Airbnb listings and crime in neighborhoods. We conduct the first such empirical test in Boston neighborhoods, focusing on two potential mechanisms: (1) the inflow of tourists might generate or attract cri

Do perceived social neighborhood factors explain the association between neighborhood age composition and mental health among Dutch older adults?

BACKGROUND: In the light of urbanization and aging, a crucially relevant policy question is how to shape neighborhoods to foster healthy aging. An important debate is whether older adults should group in neighborhoods, or whether a more mixed neighborhood age composition is more beneficial to health and well-being. We therefore assessed the association between neighborhood age structure and mental health and the mediating role of individual perceptions of neighborhood social factors. METHODS: We conducted multivariable linear regression models and causal mediation analyses in 1255 older adult

Geographic proximity to neighborhood resources and depression among older adults in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults are closely connected to their neighborhoods and they spend more time there than younger adults. Because their mobility is often impeded by diminished health and functioning, access to neighborhood health and social services is essential for their well-being. This article examines whether geographic proximity to these types of neighborhood resources is associated with depression among older adults in South Korea. METHODS: Data are from A Profile of Older Adults: 2015 which sampled 1,455 community-dwelling individuals ages 60 and older in South Korea. The Patient Healt

An Examination of Failed Grocery Store Interventions in Former Food Deserts.

Background. Implementing food stores in deprived neighborhoods to improve access to healthy food is a debated topic. Aims. To uncover important contributors to the closure of grocery store interventions in urban food deserts. Method. We systematically reviewed both peer-reviewed and gray literature for publications on the failure of grocery store interventions. Results. We found nine articles on six different failed food stores. The reasons stated for closure included low sales, a lack of food retail experience, poor marketing, and difficulty in attracting and retaining a high volume of consum

Environmental and socioeconomic determinants of leptospirosis incidence in Colombia.

Human leptospirosis is an infection that most often affects tropical countries. Since 2007, Colombia requires the notification of disease cases, enabling the observation of an increase in cases in recent years. The objectives of this article were to analyze environmental and socioeconomic variables and to evaluate their relationship with human leptospirosis cases. This is an ecological study on human leptospirosis cases aggregated by municipality and reported between 2007 and 2016. Spatial aggregation assessment was made using the Getis-Ord Gi method, and negative binomial regression was used

Associations of built environment and children's physical activity: a narrative review.

PROBLEM: Childhood obesity has been an epidemic particularly in high-income countries. There is a considerable volume of data and studies depicting the rising number of obese children and adolescents in different countries. As suggested by the literature, physical inactivity is one the main drivers of childhood obesity. This paper addresses the associations of the built environment with physical activity of children in order to find to theoretically facilitate intervention and prevention measures. Literature: There is a large body of literature describing the overall determinants of children's

Reaching the unreached: Building resilience through engagement with diverse communities.

The Department of Homeland Security Center for Faith-based & Neighborhood Partnerships (DHS Center) is one of 13 federal centres whose mandate is to engage faith-based and community groups with governments in the delivery of human services. Working alongside local jurisdictions, over the past five years, the DHS Center developed the Building Resilience with Diverse Communities (BRDC) engagement process to improve relationships with faith-based and community organisations and to 'reach unreached' populations in emergency preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. BRDC works to improve com

Offender Mobility During the Crime: Investigating the Variability of Crime Event Contexts and Associated Outcomes in Stranger Sexual Assaults.

Using data from qualitative interviews and police reports, latent class analysis is used on a sample of 54 repeat stranger sexual offenders who committed 204 sexual assaults to identify discrete contexts present at the time of victim encounter that influence these offenders' decision to use more than one location to commit their crimes. Five distinct classes are identified: residential outdoor common area, spontaneous/quiet outdoor site, residential home, active green space, and indoor/public gathering place. An investigation into the outcome(s) that most often result from the offender's decis

The determinants of lottery sales in Portugal.

In sum, this paper examines the core determinants of lottery sales in Portugal. With panel data analysis covering 18 Portuguese districts and 5 years, this study explains the variations in a district's per-capita lottery sales in terms of key theoretical hypotheses such as per capita district income, age, education index, gender and religion. This paper concludes that the richer Portuguese districts spend more than the poorer districts and there is an inverted-U relationship between lottery sales and per capita income. The paper also concludes that married Catholic citizens spend more on lotte

Walking school bus programs in U.S. public elementary schools.

BACKGROUND: Active transportation to school provides an important way for children to meet physical activity recommendations. The "walking school bus" (WSB) is a strategy whereby adults walk with a group of children to and from school along a fixed route. This study assessed whether school-organized WSB programs varied by school characteristics, district policies, and state laws. METHODS: School data were gathered by mail-back surveys in nationally representative samples of U.S. public elementary schools during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years (n = 632 and 666, respectively). Correspo

Inequality in the built environment underlies key health disparities in physical activity and obesity.

CONTEXT: Environmental factors are suggested to play a major role in physical activity (PA) and other obesity-related behaviors, yet there is no national research on the relationship between disparity in access to recreational facilities and additional impact on PA and overweight patterns in US adolescents. OBJECTIVE: In a nationally representative cohort, we sought to assess the geographic and social distribution of PA facilities and how disparity in access might underlie population-level PA and overweight patterns. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Residential locations of US adolescents

Occupational factors associated with astrocytomas: a case-control study.

The most malignant form of all brain tumors is the supratentorial astrocytoma. Little is known about its etiology, but exogenous factors have been blamed. In this case-control study, 78 astrocytoma patients have been compared with 197 clinical and 92 population controls. An extensive questionnaire was used to gather information about occupational and residential environment exposure. Inquiries concerning groups of or individual chemicals elicited low rates of affirmative response, with negligible differences between cases and controls. However, the questions "working at an airfield" and "livin

Determinants of the community living arrangements of older unmarried women.

Data from the nationally representative 1976 Survey of Income and Education provide the opportunity to examine the joint effects of age, marital status, personal income, and the need for functional assistance on living arrangements of older unmarried white women. A particular interest in this research is testing the hypothesis that the effects of income and functional health are interactive. This hypothesis implies that the effect of functional disability on living arrangements is contingent on level of personal income. Log-linear model analyses indicate that, although the main effects of all

Detecting high-risk neighborhoods and socioeconomic determinants for common oral diseases in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Ideally, health services and interventions to improve dental health should be tailored to local target populations. But this is not the standard. Little is known about risk clusters in dental health care and their evaluation based on small-scale, spatial data, particularly among under-represented groups in health surveys. Our study aims to investigate the incidence rates of major oral diseases among privately insured and self-paying individuals in Germany, explore the spatial clustering of these diseases, and evaluate the influence of social determinants on oral disease risk cluste

The perceived neighborhood walking environment and self-reported sleep health in a nationally representative sample of the United States.

Neighborhood environment can influence sleep health; yet, there is a lack of data on specific environment features in nationally representative samples. We used the 2020 National Health Interview Survey to determine associations between perceived built and social environment factors related to pedestrian access (walking paths, sidewalks), amenities (shops, transit stops, entertainment/services, places to relax), and unsafe walking conditions (traffic, crime) and self-reported sleep duration and disturbances. Places to relax and pedestrian access were associated with better sleep health while u
