In chronic experiments on rabbits with implanted electrodes, the 3-month vibration induced phasic changes of the spontaneous electrical activity (EEG) of the dorsal hippocampus (area CA3), mesencephalic RF, some regions of the neocortex and of reticulo-cortical EPs. After the ist month of 3-hour daily vibration, an activation in the EEG and increase of the amplitude of reticulo-cortical EPs more obvious in the neocortex, were found. The 3-month vibration exerted an inhibitory influence on reticulo-cortical system as expressed by slow waves prevailing in the EEG of cortical and subcortical stru

Spontaneously hypertensive rats have increased brain stem serotonin turnover localized to the nuclei raphe magnus, raphe pallidus, tractus solitarius and reticularis lateralis. It occurs only in young animals coinciding with the development of hypertension. In the locus coeruleus, increased serotonin metabolism is present during both the early and the established phase of hypertension. Our results provide evidence for serotonergic overactivity in specific brainstem nuclei during the development of spontaneous hypertension in the rat.

Peak velocities of voluntary saccades and fast phases of different qualities of nystagmus were studied in 20 normal subjects, 5 patients with pontine lesions and 5 patients with lesions in the frontal cortex. The peak velocity of saccades was related to the amplitude of the eye movement, the alertness of the subject and whether the subject could see the target or not. The effect of the age was not significant. The quick phases of caloric, optokinetic and angular acceleration induced nystagmus were equally rapid but somewhat slower than that of vestibular nystagmus recorded in standardized visu

This study measured the effects of superior colliculus (SC) lesions on skill at localizing stationary or moving objects, and on ability to discriminate between objects which differed in pattern or brightness in squirrel monkeys. Bilateral electrolytic lesions of the SC were made in 8 monkeys (EXP group); the lesions in 5 (SC group) were restricted essentially to the SC (22-25% damaged), the other 3 had additional unilateral damage to the midbrain reticular formation (10 to 14% damage to SC). The control group (N = 15) consisted of 9 unoperated, 3 sham-operated, and 3 lesioned-control monkeys. …

The stimulation, in the encéphale isolé cat, of the basal preoptic hypnogenic area be brief electrical pulses evokes bilaterally an extracellular positive (P) field potential of 20 to 60 msec duration in the brain stem and thalamic activating ascending reticular system. The properties of this P wave have led to consider it as the extracellular and abbreviated counterpart of an hyperpolarizing postsynaptic inhibitory process which, by the functional depression it exerts on the arousal system, would be instrumental in the induction and maintenance of synchronized sleep. The positive field potent

A case of hematoma involving probably the reticular formation of the medulla oblongata is reported. Examination showed a soft palate paresis and an ipsilateral axial lateropulsion without vertigo or oculomotor disorders. The mechanism of the lateropulsion is discussed. During the spontaneous recovery a transient hydrocephalus was observed.

Separate sub-populations of benzodiazepine receptors are involved in determining hippocampal theta frequency in freely moving rats. Systemic injection of the benzodiazepine chlordiazepoxide (CDP) reduced the frequency of theta elicited by stimulation of the brainstem reticular formation, and theta recorded during fixed interval (FI) bar pressing. Infusion of the benzodiazepine receptor antagonist flumazenil into the supramammillary nucleus (mSuM) or the posterior hypothalamic nucleus (PH) antagonised CDP in both cases. Flumazenil was similarly effective in mSuM and PH, suggesting that these nu…

A muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (MAchR) mechanism at the hypoglossal motor nucleus (HMN) can suppress tongue motor activity, and anti-MAchR agents are a component of pharmacotherapy for obstructive sleep apnea. However, the source and operation of cholinergic modulation of HMN activity are unknown in vivo. Here, we identify tongue motor responses to optical stimulation of cholinergic neurons at the HMN and intermediate reticular nucleus (IRt) in isoflurane-anesthetized transgenic mice (ChAT-ChR2(H134R)-EYFP) with and without pharmacological manipulation of the HMN. The IRt constitutes a ma

OBJECTIVES: A previous study reported that stimulation of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PTg) and the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Gi) suppressed and modulated the swallowing reflex, respectively. The swallowing central pattern generator comprises the nucleus of the solitary tract (Sol) and lateral reticular formation (LRF). The PTg projects to the Gi, and the Gi projects to the Sol and LRF. Thus, suggesting that PTg-induced suppression of the swallowing reflex is mediated via the Gi. We investigated whether electric lesions of the Gi, or microinjection of methyllycaconitine (ML…

BACKGROUND: The corticoreticular pathway (CRP) innervates the proximal muscles of extremities and axial muscles; therefore, it is involved in postural control and gait. We report on a patient who exhibited proximal weakness due to a CRP injury, which was evaluated using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
METHODS: A 62-year-old male patient who had been injured in a traffic accident underwent conservative management for a contusional hemorrhage in the right frontotemporal lobes, and a subdural and epidural hematoma in the right temporoparietal lobes. The patient exhibited right proximal weak

Hippocampal rhythmical slow activity (RSA) can be elicited by stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation. All classes of anxiolytic drug so far tested reduce the frequency of this RSA. Anxiolytic barbiturates and benzodiazepines, as opposed to compounds such as buspirone, are thought to act as receptor agonists of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). In the present study muscimol (a GABAA receptor agonist) and baclofen (a GABAB receptor agonist) were injected into freely moving rats. Baclofen produced a dose-related decrease in frequency of RSA in the range 1 to…

Clinical descriptions of somatoform disorders tend to fall largely into the two main categories of conversion disorder and hypochondriasis. These disorders frequently occur in the context of other psychopathology and also tend to have a significant association with CNS disease. Evidence implicating alterations in brainstem reticular arousal and attentional mechanisms in the etiology of these disorders is reviewed. Relevant studies investigating cerebral asymmetry of function have tended to associate right hemisphere information processing style with the sensory, attentional and affective chang
