Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a congenital neurological disorder that is characterized by hamartomas involving the skin, brain, and eyes and marked by the presence of the facial port-wine stain, which consequently leads to various ocular complications. Among all ocular comorbidities, glaucoma is the most frequently witnessed in SWS patients with a prevalence of 30%-70%. If glaucoma is refractory to conventional medical management, surgical intervention can be considered. Common complications of glaucoma procedures in SWS are choroidal detachment and suprachoroidal hemorrhage. Moreover, we rep

We report a case of successful management of intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody bevacizumab in two unusual complications, preretinal neovascularization and vitreous hemorrhage, secondary to a combined hamartoma of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium (CHRRPE). A male pediatric patient suffered from decreased vision in the right eye at 5-year-old. His ophthalmologic examination revealed a CHRRPE involving the superior area of the optic disc and macula in the right eye. The patient's family history and neurological examinations of tuberous sclerosis

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to investigate the changes of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) concentrations in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) combined with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) patients after panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), and to explore the risk factors associated with the occurrence of VH. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 46 eyes surgically treated with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), divided into three groups: PRP group (18 eyes) – PDR combined with VH patients with previous PRP; no-PRP group (18 eyes) – PDR combin

INTRODUCTION: In infants who have suffered head trauma there are two possible explanations for retinal hemorrhage (RH): direct vitreous shaking and occurrence in association with intracranial lesions. Which possibility is more plausible was examined.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective study reviewed the clinical records of children younger than four years with head trauma who had been diagnosed with any findings on head computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Of 452 cases, 239 underwent an ophthalmological examination and were included in this stud…

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is a common retinal vascular disorder typically characterized by distinct findings on fundus examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT). An unusual and challenging presentation involves a full-thickness macular hemorrhage extending from the internal limiting membrane (ILM) to the subretinal space. Here, we present the case of a 52-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus who experienced sudden vision loss in the right eye and progressive vision decline in the left eye. Fundus examination revealed superotemporal BRVO in the right eye and old infer

OBJECTIVE: To report the visual and anatomic outcome after surgical drainage of suprachoroidal hemorrhage according to hemorrhage severity.
DESIGN: A retrospective chart review.
PARTICIPANTS: Forty-eight consecutive eyes undergoing surgical drainage of a suprachoroidal hemorrhage at The Medical College of Wisconsin were examined.
INTERVENTION: Demographic and clinical data were abstracted from patients' medical records. Eyes were classified into four categories of increasing hemorrhage complexity: (1) nonappositional choroidal hemorrhage without vitreous or retinal incarceration in the woun

Retinal hemorrhage is a complication of interferon therapy of unknown pathogenesis. We report two chronic active hepatitis C patients who developed retinal hemorrhage and/or cotton wool patches during interferon-alpha therapy 4 and 12 wk after beginning treatment. At the time of the hemorrhage, plasma-activated complement 5, a known potent intravascular aggregator of granulocytes, increased to 54 ng/ml in one patient and to 29 ng/ml in the other patient. When the hemorrhage resolved, it decreased to under 5 ng/ml. Our cases suggest that complement activation occurs in patients treated with int…

A total of 358 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) were reviewed to examine the relationship between branch retinal vein occlusion with neovascularization elsewhere (NVE), vitreous hemorrhage, and posterior tractional retinal breaks. Twenty-eight of 358 (7.8%) BRVO patients had vitreous hemorrhage. In this group of 28 patients, 24 of the 28 (85.7%) had NVE. Of the 24 BRVO patients with vitreous hemorrhage and NVE, six (21.4%) were found to have posterior tractional retinal breaks adjacent to avulsed neovascular tissue. These data indicate a strong association between BRVO patien

PURPOSE: To evaluate possible risk factors for multiple retinal tears in patients with acute posterior vitreous detachment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and seventy-six consecutive patients presenting with symptoms of floaters and/or flashes were examined. The associations of retinal tears with the duration of symptoms, multiple floaters, flashing, a family history of retinal detachment, peripheral retinal degeneration, lens status, myopia, tobacco dust, and retinal or vitreous hemorrhage were analyzed.
RESULTS: Fifty-four (14.4%) of the 376 patients had 71 initial retinal tears. For

A 4-year-old dog of the Appenzeller strain with experimentally induced renal hypertension presented with apparently longstanding retinal changes, including hemorrhage, detachment, tears/holes, and anemia, in one eye and intravitreal hemorrhage in the other. The retinal tears/holes probably occurred following constant vitreous traction due to retinal hemorrhage and subsequent exsanguination of most of the retinal vasculature. This animal was reexamined six months later and most of these changes had persisted. Photodocumentation is presented.

Three HIV-seropositive subjects presented with diffuse inferior retinal hemorrhages. The first patient had an inferior hemicentral vein occlusion with subsequent development of an inferior cytomegalovirus retinitis. Two other patients had an inferior 'hemorrhagic' cytomegalovirus retinitis mimicking a venous occlusion, with the retinitis being subtle in 1 patient. We speculate that: (1) venous occlusion may predispose to cytomegalovirus infection of the retina by stasis and ischemic loss of endothelium; (2) early cytomegalovirus infection of the large retinal veins may give the picture of a he…

PURPOSE: To ascertain the causes of vitreous hemorrhage and to determine the accuracy of ultrasound (U/S) in these cases, based on the degree of agreement between ultrasound and clinical findings.
METHODS: A chart review of 96 consecutive patients (106 eyes) with dense vitreous hemorrhage who underwent A- and B-scan U/S by one examiner between June 1996 and June 1999. U/S records were evaluated to determine the presence and exact distribution of areas of retinal detachment and the presence of posterior vitreous detachment, retinal tear, intraocular foreign body, or choroidal detachment. BACKGROUND: Sarcoid uveitis is occasionally accompanied by proliferative changes, such as retinal neovascularization and vitreous hemorrhage. Steroid administration, retinal photocoagulation, and vitrectomy may be indicated in such proliferative cases.
CASE: A 19-year-old woman presented with proliferative sarcoid uveitis accompanied by recurrent vitreous hemorrhage.
OBSERVATIONS: At the initial examination, bilateral vitreous opacity, retinal exudates, mild vitreous hemorrhage, retinal vasculitis, and neovascularization of the retina and optic disc were observed. Although prednisolone was a

We examined the eyes of 12 infants who died with the clinical and pathologic diagnosis of the shaken baby syndrome. The ocular histopathologic findings and the neuropathologic findings were compared. Preretinal, intraretinal, and subretinal hemorrhages were observed; hemorrhages of the superficial retinal layers and subsensory retinal space predominated. Retinal hemorrhages were found in 12 cases, intracranial hemorrhage was found in 11 cases, and cerebral edema was found in 10 cases. The intraretinal and periretinal hemorrhages were most prevalent at the posterior pole. Five cases had retinal…

The anatomical location and appearance of retinal hemorrhages in the infant provide important clues in the diagnosis of underlying disorders. While neonatal retinal hemorrhages related to birth trauma are common, benign, and self-limited, other retinal hemorrhages in infancy may signify intracranial aneurysms, accidental or non-accidental injury, and a variety of ocular (e.g., Coats' disease, PHPV, ROP, retinal dysplasia, hypertension, myopia) or systemic disease (e.g., hematologic or cardiovascular disorders, infection, protein C deficiency). In this review, retinal hemorrhages are illustrate…

PURPOSE: To report two cases of vitreous hemorrhage caused by avulsed retinal vessel syndrome (ARVS), one of which was successfully treated without vascular occlusion.
OBSERVATIONS: A 62-year-old female presented with vitreous hemorrhage of unknown origin. We performed vitrectomy and found a detached and ruptured retinal vein below the optic nerve head. After coagulating the peripheral side of the blood vessel, we were able to prevent the recurrence of vitreous hemorrhage. However, she developed branch retinal vein occlusion and subsequently macular edema. In the other case, a 71-year-old wom

INTRODUCTION: Retinal cysts are rare lesions of the fundus that are essentially fluid-filled cavities located or originating in the retina, … covery after external surgical treatment has never been reported before.
CONCLUSIONS: Giant cystic retinal hemorrhage with retinoschisis is very rare. Orbital magnetic resonance imaging and ocular B-scan ultrasound are essential for its diagnosis, and the selection of an appropriate surgical procedure is necessary to maximize the benefit for affected patients.
