The effect of rhizosphere and the plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides in model constructed wetlands treating synthetic domestic wastewater.

The effects of and main contributors in rhizosphere and plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides (SAs) in constructed wetland (CW) models for the treatment of domestic wastewater are currently unclear. To investigate the degradation and key rhizosphere factors of mixed SAs with sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfapyridine (SPD), sulfamerazine (SMZ1), sulfamethazine (SMZ2), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at millimeter distances from the root surface, a multi-interlayer rhizobox experiment planted with Cyperus alternifolius, Juncus effusus, Cyperus papyrus, and an unvegetated control was conducted. The…

Pseudomonas atacamensis sp. nov., isolated from the rhizosphere of desert bloom plant in the region of Atacama, Chile.

The bacterial strain M7D1T was isolated from samples of the rhizosphere of desert bloom plants on the Atacama region located in northern Chile as part of a study intended to isolate nitrifying bacteria in this adverse environment. It was previously identified as belonging to the Pseudomonas fluorescens group. In this study, the phylogenetic analysis of the 16s RNA, gyrA, rpoB and rpoD genes confirmed that this strain belongs to this group, especially Sub Group (SG) Koreensis, but it represents a potential new species. Additionally, the average nucleotide identity confirmed this as the highest …

In vitro investigation to explore the toxicity of different groups of pesticides for an agronomically important rhizosphere isolate Azotobacter vinelandii.

In this work, an attempt was made to evaluate the effect of pesticides on growth pattern, surface morphology, cell viability and growth regulators of nitrogen fixing soil bacterium. Pesticide tolerant Azotobacter vinelandii strain AZ6 (Accession no. MG028654) was found to tolerate maximum level of pesticide and displayed multifarious PGP activities. At higher concentrations, pesticides triggered cellular/structural damage and reduced the cell viability as clearly shown under SEM and CLSM. With increase in concentration, pesticides exhibited a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in PGP traits of st

Metatranscriptome Analysis Deciphers Multifunctional Genes and Enzymes Linked With the Degradation of Aromatic Compounds and Pesticides in the Wheat Rhizosphere.

Agricultural soils are becoming contaminated with synthetic chemicals like polyaromatic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), phenols, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides due to excessive dependency of crop production systems on the chemical inputs. Microbial degradation of organic pollutants in the agricultural soils is a continuous process due to the metabolic multifunctionalities and enzymatic capabilities of the soil associated communities. The plant rhizosphere with its complex microbial inhabitants and their multiple functions, is amongst the most live …

Phylogenetic diversity and antagonistic traits of root and rhizosphere pseudomonads of bean from Iran for controlling Rhizoctonia solani.

Fluorescent pseudomonads from bean root and rhizosphere in Iran were investigated for biocontrol of the fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated 16S rRNA, gyrB and rpoD sequences for 33 Pseudomonas isolates showed that 15 belonged to four clusters within the 'P. fluorescens' group, i.e. one corresponding to P. thivervalensis, two others including P. moraviensis or P. baetica, and the last one without closely-related established species. The 18 other isolates belonged to five clusters within the 'P. putida' group, one including P. mosselii and P. entomophila, an…

Medicago truncatula Gaertn. as a model for understanding the mechanism of growth promotion by bacteria from rhizosphere and nodules of alfalfa.

The present study showed all the 16 strains isolated and identified from the alfalfa rhizosphere and nodules, and registered in GenBank, to be good candidates for targeted use in studies addressing the rather weak known mechanism of plant growth promotion, including that of Medicago truncatula, a molecular crop model. Based on physiological, biochemical and molecular analysis, the 16 isolates obtained were ascribed to the following five families: Bacillaceae, Rhizobiaceae, Xantomonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadaceae, within which 9 genera and 16 species were identified. All these …

Enrichment of bacteria possessing catechol dioxygenase genes in the rhizosphere of Spirodela polyrrhiza: a mechanism of accelerated biodegradation of phenol.

The bacterial community structure in bulk water and in rhizosphere fractions of giant duckweed, Spirodela polyrrhiza, was quantitatively and qualitatively investigated by PCR-based methods using 6 environmental water samples to elucidate the mechanisms underlying selective accumulation of aromatic compound-degrading bacteria in the rhizosphere of S. polyrrhiza. S. polyrrhiza selectively accumulated a diverse range of aromatic compound-degrading bacteria in its rhizosphere, regardless of the origin of water samples, despite no exposure to phenol. The relative abundances of the catechol 1,2-diox…

Graphene oxide remodels the rhizosphere microbiome and induces metabolic reprogramming of flavor-related compounds in tea leaves.

The flavor quality of Camellia sinensis is strongly influenced by their secondary metabolites and associated microbial communities. Graphene oxide (GO) is a carbon-based nanomaterial with unique physicochemical properties. While its potential to modulate plant physiology has been recognized, its specific effects on tea plant metabolism and associated rhizosphere microbiomes remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, a pot experiment was established to evaluate the impact of varying GO concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100 mg/L) on both the foliar metabolic profiles of tea plants and the structur…

Rhizosphere dynamics in soil recovery by Leucaena leucocephala mining tailing-contaminated substrates from the Fundão Dam failure.

One alternative for soil quality restoration is the use of microorganisms that enhance plant development and contaminant bioavailability. This study evaluated the microbial community in the absence and presence of Leucaena leucocephala cultivated in mining tailings from the Fundão Dam collapse, Mariana, Brazil. Substrates included 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% tailings. Plant growth, total organic carbon (TOC), respiration, and rhizosphere prokaryote density were analyzed. Plant development decreased with higher tailing proportions, while TOC increased in the presence of leucaena. Comparisons betwee…

Is within-field spatial variation in wheat Fusarium crown rot associated with rhizosphere microbiome and soil nutrients.

Fusarium crown rot (FCR) of wheat, caused predominantly by Fusarium pseudograminearum, frequently exhibits marked spatial heterogeneity within individual fields despite uniform cultivars and agronomic management. However, the mechanisms underlying this within-field variation remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated six commercial wheat fields in Henan Province, China, each containing distinct highly diseased (HD) and lightly diseased (LD) zones. Soil physicochemical properties and rhizosphere microbial communities (characterised via 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing) were co…

Regulatory mechanisms of synthetic microbial communities on rhizosphere microecology to alleviate continuous monoculture obstacles of medicinal plants.

Driven by industrial policies and market expansion, China has formed the world's largest medicinal plant cultivation industry. However, sustainable herbal production is seriously hindered by continuous monoculture obstacles (CMOs), which arise from prolonged single-species successive cultivation and manifest as comprehensive soil degradation featuring autotoxic allelochemical buildup, unbalanced rhizosphere microbiota, impaired soil physicochemical conditions, and frequent soil-borne pathogen outbreaks. Such adverse alterations lower soil enzyme activity, disrupt microbial community homeostasi…

Salinity gradients shape rhizosphere bacterial diversity and assembly of wheat in saline-alkali rice-wheat rotation soils.

The saline-alkali soils of the Yellow River Delta constitute an important reserve of arable land resources in China, and the rice-wheat cropping system has been widely recognized as an effective approach for improving soil quality and increasing crop yields in this region. However, region-specific field investigations evaluating the effects of salinity on wheat rhizosphere bacterial communities within this system remain limited. To fill this research gap, we conducted a field salinity gradient experiment with low-salinity (LST, 1.5 g/kg), medium-salinity (MST, 3.0 g/kg), and high-salinity (HST…

Rhizosphere engineering 2.0: Predictive microbiome design for climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable food production, and global food security.

The rhizosphere is a dynamic interface among plant roots, soil, and microbiota, where the resident microbial community shapes plant health, ecosystem resistance and resilience, nutrient cycling, and sustainable crop production. Yet the limited efficacy of conventional microbial inoculants under field conditions - reflecting poor persistence of introduced microorganisms, incomplete mechanistic understanding of plant-microbiome signalling, and high context-dependence across soils and climates - has created a need for predictive, rather than empirical, microbiome engineering. To close this gap, w…

Rhizosphere Diazotrophs in Acidic Agroecosystems: An Evidence-Chain and Microbiome-Compatibility Framework for Stabilizing Crop Growth Promotion.

Acidic soils are widespread in global agroforestry systems and severely constrain crop production through proton stress, aluminum/manganese phytotoxicity, phosphorus fixation, and rhizosphere microbiome reassembly. Rhizosphere diazotrophs can theoretically contribute to plant nitrogen (N) nutrition and stress adaptation. However, their N-fixation efficiency and growth-promoting effects in acidic soils are often highly unstable, limiting the predictability of field applications. This narrative mechanistic review synthesizes and critically interprets evidence on the physicochemical filters gover…

Contrasting Latitudinal Patterns of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Diversity in Sorghum Rhizosphere Versus Bulk Soils Across Climatic Zones.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form symbionts with plant roots and contribute critically to the nutrient acquisition and health maintenance of crops. However, the diversity and maintenance mechanisms of AM fungi in large-scale agroecosystems remain poorly understood. We collected 534 samples from 55 sorghum fields spanning subtropical, warm temperate and temperate climatic zones. AM fungal diversity in both rhizosphere and bulk soils was examined using high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that AM fungal α-diversity in rhizosphere soils declined with increasing latitude, with the highe…

Optimized Controlled-Release Fertilization Improves Productivity and Reshapes the Rhizosphere Microbiome in Lei Bamboo: A Metagenomic Assessment.

Intensive nitrogen fertilization in Lei bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) plantations has increased productivity but has also reduced nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE), accelerated nutrient losses, and contributed to soil degradation. How nutrient-release strategies influence rhizosphere microbiome assembly and ecosystem functioning remains poorly understood. Here, we developed a bamboo shoot-specific controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) and evaluated different urea-CRF blending ratios to identify sustainable fertilization strategy for Lei bamboo production. Mixed CRF-urea treatments outperformed both…

Effects of Continuous Cropping on Chili Root Rot: Insights from Rhizosphere Microbial Communities and Synthetic Community Applications.

Continuous cropping often results in stunted plant growth and a higher incidence of soil-borne diseases. Soil microbial communities play a crucial role in promoting plant growth, maintaining plant health, and enhancing plant resistance to various diseases. This study examines the impact of continuous cropping on chili root rot and explores the contribution of soil microbial communities to alleviating this issue. The results revealed that prolonged continuous cropping significantly altered the composition of the rhizosphere bacterial community. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated a ma…
