Determinants of short-run supply of small ruminants in Botswana.

This study utilizes pooled agricultural region data for the 1982-1987 period to estimate the short-run supply of sheep and goats in Botswana … ay be revealing the existence of inadequate access by most producers to organized markets for small ruminants. It is further argued that without promoting the development of such markets, other developmental efforts, particularly those geared at improving farm-level productivity will yield no positive outcomes, as farmers lack the cash incentive to invest i …

Meat from small ruminants and public health in the Caribbean.

Small ruminants are very important livestock species in the English-speaking Caribbean. Total populations for the Caribbean region are approximately 677,000 goats and 281,000 sheep. Although the primary purpose of sheep and goats is meat production for local consumption, the animals are also a source of emergency income. Production systems are generally characterised as small-scale and low-input, and few breeding or productivity records are kept. Although intra-regional trade does occur between Caribbean countries, there is insufficient production for extra-regional trade. The Caribbean countr…

Sarcoptic mange in wild ruminants in zoological gardens in Israel.

Sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) occurred among wild ruminant species in five zoological gardens in Israel, from 1984 to 1994. Infestation of five ruminants by S. scabiei is reported for the first time: mountain gazelles (Gazella gazella), Nubian ibexes (Capra ibex nubiana), a barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), elands (Taurotragus oryx), and an Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx). All animals in the herds were administered ivermectin orally at a dose of 200 micrograms/kg body weight daily for 3 consecutive days. This was repeated three times at 2-wk intervals. The disease was eradicated in four sm…

Orthopedic conditions of small ruminants. Llama, sheep, goat, and deer.

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the foot, infectious arthritis, angular limb deformities, patellar luxation, tendon contracture and injuries, and fractures encountered in sheep, goats, llamas, and deer are reviewed. These species share similar orthopedic problems to cattle, but management conditions, particularly for pet animals, may place special demands on the veterinarian treating these disease conditions. The mild temperament and relatively small body size of these animals make them excellent candidates for treatment of orthopedic problems often not amenable to practical treatment i

Urolithiasis in small ruminants. I. A retrospective evaluation of urethrostomy.

A retrospective study on the results of urethrostomy in 28 small ruminants was made. Ten animals were euthanised during surgery. In the 18 remaining animals short-term results were good. Recurrence of symptoms occurred in 8 animals (45%). Five animals were operated a second time, leading to 4 recurrences. Two animals were operated a third time and remained free of symptoms.

Fascioliasis problems in ruminants in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The economic importance of fascioliasis in the livestock industry in the state of Rio Grande do Sul was assessed through the Federal meat inspection at major slaughter houses. Annual average rates of the livers condemned by Fasciola hepatica infection at the houses in the state have been recorded as 12-13% in cattle and 7% in sheep, respectively. Many farms in the provinces of the frontier regions of Brazil with Uruguay are contaminated with F. hepatica and acute fascioliasis with a high mortality among sheep flocks frequently occurs during the wet and cold winter season in the lowland areas o

Ruminal and post-ruminal phytate degradation of diets containing rapeseed meal or soybean meal.

This study aimed to investigate ruminal and post-ruminal degradation of phytic acid (InsP6) in diets containing either rapeseed meal (RSM) o … degradation, suggests that at a low rumen passage rate, InsP6-P from the feed becoming available to ruminants is almost entirely from InsP6 degradation in the rumen.

Co-Rumination and Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence: Prospective Associations and the Mediating Role of Brooding Rumination.

Although relationships between co-rumination and depressive symptoms have often been found, little research attention has been given to mechanisms underlying this association. The current study investigated brooding rumination as a mediator of the relationship between co-rumination and depressive symptoms. Analyses were performed on data of 1549 adolescents (53.4% girls; Mage = 12.93, range 9-17) using three waves of data with 1-year intervals. Mediated and indirect effects were investigated by means of cross-lagged analyses. The results indicated that co-rumination was not predictive of depre

The roles of dispositional rumination, inferiority feelings and gender in interpersonal rumination experiences of college students.

Given that little is known about the underlying mechanisms of rumination in response to an interpersonal offense, the purpose of this research is to reveal if inferiority feelings, dispositional rumination, and gender predict rumination regarding an interpersonal offense in a college student population. A sample of 147 undergraduate students completed the Ruminative Thought Style Scale, the Inferiority Feelings Scale and the Rumination About an Interpersonal Offense scale. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis confirm that although the majority of variation in interpersonal rumin

Clicking away at co-rumination: co-rumination correlates across different modalities of communication.

Co-rumination is associated with positive friendship quality (thought to buffer against anxiety and depression) but paradoxically higher levels of anxiety and depression. With the increasing use of technology for communication among adults, there is little known about co-rumination effects across different modalities of communication. In the current study, we examined co-rumination through four methods (i.e. in person, phone calls, text messaging, and social media) in two separate samples - college students and participants from the community. Classic co-rumination effects were found for in-pe

Harvesting, rumination, digestion, and passage of fruit and leaf diets by a small ruminant, the blue duiker.

Because small ruminants (<15 kg) have a high ratio of metabolic rate to fermentation capacity, they are expected to select and require low-fiber, nutrient-dense concentrate diets. However, recent studies suggest that small ruminants may not be as limited in their digestive capacity as previously thought. In this study, we examined harvesting, rumination, digestion, and passage of three diets (domestic figs Ficus carica, fresh alfalfa Medicago sativa, and Pacific willow leaves Salix lasiandra) ranging from 10 to 50% neutral detergent fiber content (NDF) in captive blue duikers (Cephalophus mont…

Pathology of ruminal acidosis in cattle.

Rumen acidosis (RA) is one of the most prevalent alimentary diseases of ruminants and is caused by excessive fermentation of feedstuff in the reticulorumen. This retrospective study aimed to characterize the microscopic lesions of acute and subacute cases of RA in cattle older than 6 months. Fifty-two RA cases with rumen fluid pH ≤5.5 at the time of necropsy were selected. Cases were classified as acute or subacute RA based on their clinical histories; 7 animals were included as controls. In rumen histologic sections, the number, length, and width of ruminal papillae and the thickness of the m…

[Rumination and schizotypal personality traits].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although rumination and schizotypal traits can be considered transdiagnostic phenomena and can occur within non-clinical population as well, a relatively small number of research has been carried out on the topic involving both patient and non clinical participants. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between schizotypal traits and rumination using a transdiagnostic approach, involving participants living with psychotic disorders and sine morbo individuals. METHODS: We recruited participants living with psychotic disorders (paranoid schizophrenia, hebe

Effects of rumination and distraction on inhibition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination involves fixating on negative content, is associated with biases in inhibitory control, and typically worsens negative mood. In contrast, distraction attempts to engage attentional control and downregulate negative mood. To date studies have not dissociated the detrimental effects of rumination from beneficial effects of distraction on individuals' ability to inhibit irrelevant negative information. Moreover, research has not examined the possible pathways connecting rumination and distraction, negative mood and inhibitory control. METHODS: To bridge thes

Rumination syndrome. A review article.

Rumination syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by effortless postprandial regurgitation of ingested food into the mouth. An unperceived postprandial contraction of the abdominal wall could be a key mechanism. In those patients, retrograde flow of the ingested gastric content into the mouth is produced due to a simultaneous combination of elevated intra-abdominal pressure and negative intrathoracic pressure. The estimated prevalence is around 2% in the general adult population. The main clinical characteristics include: a) early postprandial regurgitation, b) the ef

Update on Small Ruminant Lentiviruses.

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SLRVs) have been recognized throughout the world for decades. SLRVs are a heterogenous group of viruses that can infect sheep, goats, and wild ruminants. Evidence supports cross-species infection. These viruses cause lifelong infections where they target specific organs, which can result in production losses due to diminished milk production, consequential increases in neonatal death and diminished growth, and premature culling of prime age animals. No vaccine or treatments have proved effective. Control programs rely on an understanding of viral transmission and a…

Rumination Syndrome: Recognition and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this paper is to discuss current diagnostic and treatments of rumination. Rumination is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in adults, especially when symptoms suggest regurgitation rather than vomiting accompanied by re-chewing and re-swallowing and should be included in the differential diagnosis. It is primarily diagnosed clinically by ROME-IV or DSM-5. RECENT FINDINGS: That rumination can be re-affirmed by characteristic patterns on objective testing such as high-resolution esophageal manometry and 24-h pH impedance testing. However, although gastroduode

Diagnosis and Treatment of Rumination Syndrome.

Rumination syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by effortless postprandial regurgitation. The disorder appears uncommon, although only limited epidemiologic data are available. Awareness of the characteristic symptoms is essential for recognizing the disorder, and thus avoiding the long delay in diagnosis, that many patients experience. Although objective testing by postprandial esophageal high-resolution impedance manometry is available in select referral centers, a clinical diagnosis can be made in most patients. The main therapy for rumination syndrome is behavio
