Brain network dynamics during rumination relate to relapse of depression.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is a maladaptive cognitive style and a risk factor for relapse of depression. However, the clinically relevant pattern of dynamic network reconfiguration during rumination in remitted depression and its implication in relapse remained unclear. METHODS: We employed a rumination induction neuroimaging paradigm in which subjects would be guided into an active rumination state and a distraction state. Forty-two patients with remitted depression were involved. Participants underwent assessments of rumination behavior and imaging tasks, and were then monitored for two year to

How thinking hurts: Rumination, worry, and avoidance processes in adjustment to bereavement.

Repetitive negative thought plays an important role in the maintenance of mental health problems following bereavement. To date, bereavement researchers have primarily focused on rumination (i.e., repetitive thought about negative events and/or negative emotions), yet the interest in worry (i.e., repetitive thought about uncertain future events) is increasing. Both cognitive processes potentially lead to poorer adaptation to bereavement by contributing to loss-related avoidance and behavioural avoidance of activities. The current study aims to establish the differential associations of ruminat

Does social anxiety predict rumination and co-rumination among adolescents?

Social anxiety in adolescence is manifested by anxiety about and avoidance of social interactions. The present study examined whether social anxiety predicts higher levels of both rumination and co-rumination over time. Rumination and co-rumination were studied as possible outcomes because the cognitive content of these processes often involves interpersonal concerns. A three-wave longitudinal study of 575 adolescents (aged 13-16 years old) was conducted over 6 months. Adolescent girls reported higher levels of social anxiety, rumination, and co-rumination than boys. Structural equation modell

Reciprocal relations between rumination and bulimic, substance abuse, and depressive symptoms in female adolescents.

The authors examined the reciprocal relations between rumination and symptoms of depression, bulimia, and substance abuse with longitudinal data from 496 female adolescents. Rumination predicted future increases in bulimic and substance abuse symptoms, as well as onset of major depression, binge eating, and substance abuse. Depressive and bulimic, but not substance abuse, symptoms predicted increases in rumination. Rumination did not predict increases in externalizing symptoms, providing evidence for the specificity of effects of rumination, although externalizing symptoms predicted future inc

Ruminative coping among patients with dysthymia before and after pharmacotherapy.

The pivotal role of rumination in relation to other coping strategies was assessed in chronically depressed (dysthymic disorder) individuals versus nondepressed controls. Individuals with dysthymia demonstrated elevated use of rumination and other emotion-focused strategies (emotional expression, emotional containment, self- and other-blame). Among patients with dysthymia, rumination was linked to this limited array of emotion-focused efforts and diminished use of cognitive disengagement, whereas among controls, rumination was correlated with a broad constellation of problem- and emotion-focus

Beyond the fear that lingers: The interaction between fear of cancer recurrence and rumination in relation to depression and anxiety symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR) is reported to be a normal response to cancer, but little is known about the interaction between FCR and maladaptive cognitive processes, which may increase the risk for depression and anxiety disorders among cancer survivors. Previous studies have shown the influence of rumination on depression and anxiety in other populations. Thus, the present study aimed to examine how FCR and rumination may relate to depression and anxiety symptoms among cancer survivors. METHODS: The present study included cancer survivors (N = 388) who had completed their

Rumination in posttraumatic stress disorder: A systematic review.

Initial models and empirical investigations of rumination in the clinical literature were predominantly in the domain of depression. However, rumination is now well-established as a transdiagnostic cognitive process, including in the context of posttraumatic stress. To clarify the current understanding of rumination in posttraumatic stress, we conducted a systematic review of the empirical literature on rumination in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Six sub-groups of studies on this topic were identified; these addressed: (i) the frequency and nature of rumination, (ii) cross-sectional re

Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Infant Temperament and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms.

This study examined prospective associations between negative emotionality, rumination, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of 301 youths (158 females) followed longitudinally from birth to adolescence. Mothers reported on youths' negative emotionality (NE) at age 1, and youths self-reported rumination at age 13 and depressive symptoms at ages 13 and 15. Linear regression analyses indicated that greater NE in infancy was associated with more depressive symptoms at age 15, even after controlling for child gender and depressive symptoms at age 13. Moreover, analyses indicated that rumi

Identifying real-world affective correlates of cognitive risk factors for internalizing disorders.

Cognitive risk factors are key in the vulnerability for internalizing disorders. Cognitive risk factors modulate the way individuals process information from the environment which in turn impacts the day-to-day affective experience. In 296 young adults, we assessed two transdiagnostic, general risk factors-repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and anxiety sensitivity in a high-RNT subsample (N = 119). We also assessed disorderand content-specific risk factors including worry, rumination, and three facets of anxiety sensitivity (cognitive, social, physical). To determine the day-to-day affective e

Network perspective on rumination and non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents with depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents with depressive disorders and poses a major public health challenge. Rumination, a key cognitive feature of depression, includes different subtypes that may relate to NSSI through distinct psychological mechanisms. However, how these subtypes interact with specific NSSI behaviors remains unclear. AIM: To examine associations between rumination subtypes and specific NSSI behaviors in adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with 305 hospitalized adolescents diagnosed with depressive disorders. The subjec

Rumination, but Not Reflection, Predicts the Reporting of Post-concussive Symptoms in a Non-clinical Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Although traditionally associated with mild head trauma, post-concussive symptoms are commonly reported across both healthy and other clinical populations. Existing research indicates that individuals with depression report high levels of post-concussive symptoms, though the underlying causes of this association remain unknown. The current study aimed to explore potential factors underlying this relationship: specifically, how maladaptive and adaptive self-focused cognitive coping styles, namely, rumination and reflection, respectively, differentially contribute to post-concussive s

Factors associated with relapse and recurrence of major depressive disorder in patients starting mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is effective for relapse prevention in major depressive disorder (MDD). It reduces cognitive reactivity (CR) and rumination, and enhances self-compassion and mindfulness. Although rumination and mindfulness after MBCT are associated with relapse, the association of CR, rumination, self-compassion, and mindfulness with relapse before initiation of MBCT has never been investigated. METHODS: Data were drawn from two randomized controlled trials, including a total of 282 remitted MDD participants (≥3 depressive episodes) who had been using ma

Distinct effects of folate pathway genes MTHFR and MTHFD1L on ruminative response style: a potential risk mechanism for depression.

Alterations in the folate pathway have been related to both major depression and cognitive inflexibility; however, they have not been investigated in the genetic background of ruminative response style, which is a form of perseverative cognition and a risk factor for depression. In the present study, we explored the association of rumination (measured by the Ruminative Responses Scale) with polymorphisms of two distinct folate pathway genes, MTHFR rs1801133 (C677T) and MTHFD1L rs11754661, in a combined European white sample from Budapest, Hungary (n=895) and Manchester, United Kingdom (n=1309)

Emotional and cognitive processes in psychotherapy are associated with different aspects of the therapeutic relationship.

OBJECTIVE: In this naturalistic study we aimed to investigate the relationships between two central change processes (affective and cognitive) and two common relationship factors ("Confidence in the therapist" and "Confidence in the treatment"), which have been shown to impact outcomes in a clinical context. We also investigated whether these interrelationships varied across treatment orientations (i.e., cognitive or psychodynamic focused). METHOD: The sample consisted of 631 patients with a primary anxiety or depressive disorder who were admitted to an inpatient program and treated with psyc

Longitudinal associations between posttraumatic stress disorder, separation anxiety, and rumination among adolescents: Disentangling within-person and between-person associations.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and separation anxiety often show high comorbidity after trauma, which complicates the course of disease and treatment response. However, it is unclear how PTSD and separation anxiety comorbidity occur. According to the cognitive model of PTSD, rumination may be a key cognitive process linking the two constructs. Thus, this study aimed to examine the relation between PTSD and separation anxiety and to assess the mediating role of rumination in this relation among adolescents after trauma. METHOD: A follow-up survey was conducted among 204 adoles

Empathy and depression among a Chinese sample: The moderating role of rumination and attentional shift.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have explored the moderating role of emotional regulation strategies in the relationship between empathy and depression, no studies have studied the moderating role of attentional control in the relationship between empathy and depression. To address this research gap, the present study investigated the moderating roles of rumination and attentional control in the relationship between empathy and depression. METHODS: 423 participants filled out questionnaires anonymously, including Interpersonal Reactivity Index, Attention Control Scale, Self-rating Depre

Sleep difficulties in college students: The role of stress, affect and cognitive processes.

Previous research indicates that sleep difficulties and stress are prevalent in college students. The main aim of the current study was to investigate the role of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), cognitive emotion regulation, and negative affect as mediators of the relationship between stress and sleep difficulties. We also intended to analyse the associations between all these variables and the gender differences. A sample of 549 college students completed self-report measures assessing the mentioned variables. Descriptive and correlational analyses showed significant differences between g

Stress-Related Symptoms and Suicidal Ideation: The Roles of Rumination and Depressive Symptoms Vary by Gender.

There is a growing body of literature suggesting that reactions to stressful life events, such as intrusive thoughts, physiological hyperarousal, and cognitive/behavioral avoidance (i.e., stress-related symptoms) may increase risk for thinking about and attempting suicide. Cognitive vulnerability models have identified rumination (i.e., perseverating on a negative mood) as a maladaptive response that may increase risk for suicidal behavior, as it has also been linked to depression. The present study examined the direct and indirect effects of stress-related symptoms on suicidal ideation throug

Emotional dysregulation in adults: The influence of rumination and negative secondary appraisals of emotion.

BACKGROUND: Emotional dysregulation is commonly discussed as a transdiagnostic factor in clinical populations. The present study aims to investigate cognitive factors (rumination and negative appraisals of emotion) in the maintenance of emotional dysregulation in a normative sample in order to partially validate a cognitive model of emotional dysregulation and to examine the potential clinical relevance of addressing cognitive factors in the treatment of emotional dysregulation. METHODS: People who were 18 or older were asked to participate via a university research system and social media. P

Personality characteristics and cognitive appraisals associated with self-discrepancy after severe traumatic brain injury.

Although changes to self-identity or self-discrepancy are common after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), the mechanisms underlying these changes are poorly understood. This study aimed to examine the influence of personality characteristics and cognitive appraisals on self-discrepancy. Participants were 51 adults (74% male) with severe TBI (M age = 36.22 years; SD = 12.65) who were on average 34 months (SD = 40.29) post-injury. They completed self-report measures of personality style (optimism and defensiveness), cognitive appraisals (threat appraisals, rumination and reflection and perceiv
