Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI): A Community-Based Study.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine condition that has been associated with atypical emotional regulation strategy use as well as elevated levels of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal ideation. Despite the existence of clinical screening guidance for this population, there is still little to no understanding of how non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation and intention manifest in women with PCOS and how this might differ from women without PCOS. Within this cross-sectional investigation, women with and without a diagnosis of PCOS (n = 418) completed validated metri

Clinical usefulness of esophageal high resolution manometry and adjunctive tests: An update.

High resolution manometry (HRM), developed from conventional manometry, is the gold standard for assessment of esophageal motor function wor … clearance. HRM provides characterization of behavioral disorders such as supragastric belching and rumination syndrome, which can mimic reflux disease. Thus, HRM has revolutionized the evaluation of esophageal motor function, and has expanded the utility of esophageal manometry in clinical practice.

Reflechi twòp--thinking too much: description of a cultural syndrome in Haiti's Central Plateau.

A rich Haitian ethnopsychology has been described, detailing concepts of personhood, explanatory models of illness, and links between mind and body. However, little research has engaged explicitly with mental illness, and that which does focuses on the Kreyòl term fou (madness), a term that psychiatrists associate with schizophrenia and other psychoses. More work is needed to characterize potential forms of mild-to-moderate mental illness. Idioms of distress provide a promising avenue for exploring common mental disorders. Working in Haiti's Central Plateau, we aimed to identify idioms of dist

The suicide crisis syndrome: A network analysis.

Recent studies introduced the suicide crisis syndrome (SCS), a condition associated with imminent suicidal behavior and characterized by (a) a pervasive feeling of entrapment in which the escape from an unbearable life situation is perceived as both urgent and impossible (Criterion A) and (b) affective disturbance, loss of cognitive control, hyperarousal, and social withdrawal (Criterion B). The goal of the present study was to use some of the analytic tools provided by network analyses to further the understanding of the psychological, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological proce

[Zoonotic diseases caused by bacteria of the genus Bartonella genus: new reservoirs ? New vectors?].

Domestic animals and wildlife represent a large reservoir for bartonellae, at least eight species or subspecies of which have been reported to cause zoonotic infections. In addition, numerous orphan clinical syndromes are now being attributed to Bartonella henselae infection. Many mammalian species, including cats, dogs, rodents and ruminants are the main bartonellae reservoirs. Cats are the main reservoir for B. henselae. It appears that domestic dogs, at least in non tropical regions, are more likely to be accidental hosts than reservoirs, and constitute excellent sentinels for human infecti

Caregiver depression after bereavement: chronic stress isn't over when it's over.

Although the adverse mental health consequences of caregiving for a relative with a progressive dementia are well documented, little is known about caregivers' adaptation after bereavement. This longitudinal study examined changes in three groups: continuing caregivers, who had been caregiving across a 4-year period (n = 98), bereaved caregivers, whose impaired relative died between Years 1 and 4 (n = 49), and controls (n = 107). Although a mean of 19.8 months had elapsed since bereavement by Year 4, bereaved and continuing caregivers did not differ on syndromal depression or depressive sympto

Large offspring syndrome: a bovine model for the human loss-of-imprinting overgrowth syndrome Beckwith-Wiedemann.

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a human loss-of-imprinting syndrome primarily characterized by macrosomia, macroglossia, and abdominal wall defects. BWS has been associated with misregulation of two clusters of imprinted genes. Children conceived with the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) appear to have an increased incidence of BWS. As in humans, ART can also induce a similar overgrowth syndrome in ruminants which is referred to as large offspring syndrome (LOS). The main goal of our study is to determine if LOS shows similar loss-of-imprinting at loci known to be misregula

Prevalence of selected Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli vaccine antigen genes among two geographically distinct ruminant populations.

Introduction. Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are a group of bacteria that cause severe bloody diarrhoea and haemolytic uraemic syndrome and are associated with neurological complications and potentially life-threatening infections. Children under five and elderly individuals are particularly vulnerable to STEC infections. The majority of STEC infections have been traced back directly or indirectly to ruminants, and there is an unmet need for a vaccine to protect these vulnerable cohorts.Gap Statement. We previously identified a series of STEC proteins that are involved in attach

Attributable testing for abnormal prion protein, database linkage, and blood-borne vCJD risks.

CONTEXT: National prospective collection of tonsillar tissue to be tested anonymously for abnormal lymphoreticular accumulation of prion protein (PrP) was approved to begin in the UK in 2004. The UK is not, however, testing autopsy specimens attributably for abnormal PrP (PrP(SC)) so that recipients at risk after a blood transfusion from, or exposed to surgical instruments from, a deceased carrier of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) can be followed up to quantify transmission risks. In Switzerland, surveillance for subclinical vCJD includes unconsented testing in autopsies: consented t

Examination of 3D sella turcica models in three species of ruminants.

Sella turcica is an important anatomical structure that contains the pituitary gland. Changes observed on the sella turcica facilitate the identification of diseases such as Down syndrome, Seckel syndrome and tuberculum sellae meningioma in humans. Therefore, studies in this region are critical for a better understanding of sella turcica. The crania of six adult male tuj sheep, five adult male hair goats and five adult male gazelles were used in the study. Cross-sectional images of the cranium were captured using computed tomography. Cross-sectional images were used to model the sella turcica

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli isolates from red deer (Cervus elaphus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and fallow deer (Dama dama) in Poland.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia (E.) coli (STEC) pathogens are responsible for the outbreaks of serious diseases in humans, including haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), bloody diarrhoea (BD) and diarrhoea (D), and they pose a significant public health concern. Wild ruminants are an important environmental reservoir of foodborne pathogens that can cause serious illnesses in humans and contaminate fresh products. There is a general scarcity of published data about wildlife as a reservoir of foodborne pathogens in Poland, which is why the potential epidemiological risk associated with red deer,

The mechanisms for maintenance of COVID Stress Syndrome symptom networks: a dynamic network analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: COVID Stress Syndrome (CSS) is a new type of health anxiety triggered by the COVID epidemic. However, we know little about the causal relationship with CSS symptoms and the temporal and dynamic interactions between symptoms and cognitive processes associated with health anxiety. DESIGN: During the epidemic of COVID-19, 193 Chinese university students completed experience sampling methods on CSS symptoms and related constructs of health anxiety three times a day for 14 days. METHODS: Multilevel vector autoregressive (mlVAR) models were used to estimate contemporaneo

Do people with psychosis engage in unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies? A test of the validity of the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS) in a clinical sample.

The Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model assumes that unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies characterised by worry, rumination, threat monitoring and attempts to control thoughts, have a central role in psychological disorders and prolonged negative affect. Collectively, these strategies constitute the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS). This research aims to test whether a questionnaire designed to capture these responses (the CAS-1: Wells, 2009, p. 268) is a valid assessment tool in clinical psychosis, and to test whether activation of the CAS is associated with positive an

Bovine genital leptospirosis: Evidence of ovarian infection by Leptospira interrogans.

Leptospirosis in ruminants causes reproductive failures leading to important economic losses. This study assessed the occurrence and genetically identified Leptospira spp. in the follicular fluid (FF) of naturally infected live cows. A total of 251 asymptomatic cows from different commercial dairy herds were subjected to ovum-pick up technique for follicular fluid sampling. PCR was performed for Leptospira spp. detection and phylogenetic analysis was later implemented for sequencing. From 251 samples analyzed, 67 (26.7 %) were lipL32-PCR positive, confirming the presence of leptospiral DNA on

[Disease monitoring in European mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) populations by clinical blood tests--aspects of epidemiology and treatment control of claw diseases].

European mouflon are in the focus of research since they were brought from the Tyrrhenic islands to the European mainland a hundred years ago. From the beginning many populations on European mainland suffer from different claw diseases which are unknown in their original habitats. Foot rot, the ovine purulent laminitis, whose existence im wild ruminants was negotiated some years before, furthermore claw alterations caused by primary or secondary lack of trace elements similar to the copper deficiency syndrome of the boreal deer species moose and reindeer and finally horn hyperplasia with a gen

Contagious agalactia of small ruminants: current knowledge concerning epidemiology, diagnosis and control.

Contagious agalactia of small ruminants is a syndrome which principally affects the mammary glands, joints and eyes. The main causal agents are Mycoplasma agalactiae in sheep, and M. agalactiae, M. mycoides subsp. mycoides large colony type and M. capricolum subsp. capricolum in goats. In addition, M. putrefaciens can produce a similar clinical picture, particularly in goats. Contagious agalactia occurs on all five continents and is often enzootic. The evolution of the infection tends to be chronic in affected animals and herds. Symptomless shedding of mycoplasmas, mainly in the milk, may pers

Metacognitive therapy for insomnia: An open cohort study on clinical outcomes and the role of cognitive-attentional syndrome factors in insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common and distressing disorder. Evidence suggests that metacognitive beliefs and maladaptive strategies, such as worry and rumination, may maintain insomnia. OBJECTIVES: This study is the first trial of metacognitive therapy (MCT) for insomnia. It aimed to evaluate the effects of MCT on insomnia severity and examine how cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS) components predict these changes. METHODS: An uncontrolled open cohort trial was conducted with 31 participants in a clinic setting. Participants received up to ten MCT sessions and completed weekly measures of i

"Operator syndrome": A unique constellation of medical and behavioral health-care needs of military special operation forces.

OBJECTIVE: U.S. military special operation forces represent the most elite units of the U.S. Armed Forces. Their selection is highly competitive, and over the course of their service careers, they experience intensive operational training and combat deployment cycles. Yet, little is known about the health-care needs of this unique population. METHOD: Professional consultations with over 50 special operation forces operators (and many spouses or girlfriends) over the past 6 years created a naturalistic, observational base of knowledge that allowed our team to identify a unique pattern of inter
