Index for the assessment of heat tolerance.

Heat tolerance was assessed by magnitude of strain induced in the body as a whole by heat load. The strain was represented by a combination of relative water loss, relative rise in rectal temperature and relative salt loss, using those critical values of the three factors which cause heat stroke (40.6 degrees C), water depletion heat exhaustion (7% of body weight) and salt depletion heat exhaustion (0.75 g per kg of body weight). As this numerical heat tolerance index is defined as the degree of disturbance induced by heat exposure concerning thermal regulation, water and electrolyte metabolis

Haplotype and diversity analysis of indigenous rice for salinity tolerance in early-stage seedling using simple sequence repeat markers.

We evaluated the seedling-stage salt tolerance of a total of 50 indigenous rice genotypes from coastal Tamil Nadu. Using a hydroponic system, we studied the different agronomic characters 14 days after exposure to six different concentrations of saline solution. Shoot and root length as well as plant biomass at seedling stage decreased with increasing salinity. Genotypes showing significant interaction and differential response towards salinity were assessed at the molecular level using 20 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers linked with salt-tolerance QTL. These genotypes were grouped into el…

[Transcriptomic dataset and analysis of a Stas2-15 overexpression line in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)].

Transcriptome sequencing has been widely employed to investigate plant stress tolerance mechanisms, identify key genes, and facilitate molecular breeding. The gene Stas2-15 represents a key candidate for salt tolerance in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants. However, publicly available transcriptomic datasets for this gene remain scarce. Therefore, generating more comprehensive data holds considerable value for potato research. Whole-transcriptome sequencing, differentially expressed gene profiling, as well as GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed on the Stas2-15-overexpressing line …

Alternative splicing-dependent T218 phosphoregulation controls SR45.1 nuclear organization and salt stress responses in Arabidopsis.

Alternative splicing creates an SR45.1-specifi c phosphoregulatory region in which threonine 218 (T218) contributesto nuclear speckle organization, RNA regulatory responses, and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. Alternative splicing expands protein and functional diversity in plants, yet the mechanistic basis by which closely related splice isoforms acquire distinct biological functions remains poorly understood. In our previous work, we showed that AS of the Arabidopsis splicing factor SR45 generates two isoforms with contrasting roles in salt stress response, where SR45.1, but not SR45.2, resto…

Salt sensitivity in young normotensive subjects is associated with a hyperinsulinemic response to oral glucose.

Insulin resistance associated with a hyperinsulinemic response to oral glucose intake has been found in patients with essential hypertension and is believed to play a role in inducing hypertension by causing renal sodium and water retention. We therefore examined whether salt-sensitive, young normotensives, assumed to be predisposed to essential hypertension, exhibit impaired glucose tolerance in a similar way. The plasma insulin and glucose response to oral glucose intake (75 g) was assessed in 23 healthy, lean, male volunteers ingesting either 20 mmol or 260 mmol NaCl/day for 6 days each in

Effects of salinisation on Cu-contaminated vineyard soils: Assessment of changes in microbial communities and resistance to salt, Cu, and antibiotics.

Climate change increases the risk of soil salinisation in Southern European vineyards. In this study, six of those soils were experimentally salinised, half of which were contaminated with Cu, a widely used fungicide. Changes in soil microbiota were assessed, including bacterial and fungal growth, respiration, carbon use efficiency calculation, and microbial community phospholipid fatty acids composition. The study also investigated whether salinisation induced a shift in the bacterial community toward increased tolerance to salt, Cu, and the antibiotics tetracycline and vancomycin. Results sh

Differences and Similarities Among Proteolytic and Nonproteolytic Strains of Clostridium botulinum Types A, B, E and F: A Review.

Cultures of Clostridium botulinum types A, B, E and F, which are responsible for human botulism, fall into two groups with different characteristics unrelated to toxin type. These groups differ primarily with respect to proteolysis, but also have different somatic and spore antigens and DNA; the heat resistance of their spores, their growth at low temperatures and their salt tolerance also differ. All known type A strains are proteolytic and all type E strains are non proteolytic, but types B and F have some proteolytic and some nonproteolytic strains. Although proteolytic strains can activate…

H2S Regulation of Metabolism in Cucumber in Response to Salt-Stress Through Transcriptome and Proteome Analysis.

In a previous study, we found that H2S alleviates salinity stress in cucumber by maintaining the Na+/K+ balance and by regulating H2S metabolism and the oxidative stress response. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms behind H2S-regulated salt-stress tolerance in cucumber. Here, an integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analysis based on RNA-seq and 2-DE was used to investigate the global mechanism underlying H2S-regulated salt-stress tolerance. In total, 11,761 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 61 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. Analysis of

S-nitrosylation of PTP1 positively regulates MPK6 activity in response to salt or cold stress in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Nitric oxide (NO), an essential signaling molecule, greatly affects how plants respond to salinity or cold stress. It can impact specific protein activity via S-nitrosylation. We found that protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (PTP1) participates in the response of Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) to both high-salt and freezing conditions. NO facilitated PTP1 S-nitrosylation at cysteine (Cys)-41, resulting in increased salt tolerance and altered sensitivity to freezing. Additionally, this process reduced the dephosphorylation activity of PTP1 and activated mitogen-activated protein kinase 6 (MPK6)…

A halotolerant strain of Bacillus cereus effectively regulates salt stress-responsive genes in Zea mays L. seedlings under stress condition.

Soil salinity severely constrains agricultural productivity worldwide, particularly affecting salt-sensitive crops such as maize (Zea mays L.) at early developmental stages. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate salinity stress; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we identified a salinity stress tolerance-promoting (SSTP) strain, Bacillus cereus isolate 74 (originally isolated from a salt-marshland environment), and investigated its role in enhancing salt tolerance in maize through in…

Multi-omics insights into salinity tolerance in African bermudagrass.

African bermudagrass (Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) is a key parent species used to produce interspecific hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis). Due to the increasing use of non-potable water for landscape irrigation, salt stress has become a major concern in the turfgrass industry. While variation in salt tolerance is known within bermudagrass, the molecular basis of this trait is not well understood, particularly in African bermudagrass. In this study, we aimed to identify the molecular mechanisms associated with salt tolerance in African bermudagrass. The first-gen…

Phenotypic, physiological and transcriptomic analysis of graded salt stress responses in Pyrus betulifolia Bunge and functional characterization of the hub gene PbSTY46.

Pyrus betulifolia Bunge is a salt‑tolerant rootstock for pear, but its salt‑tolerance mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, P. betulifolia seedlings were subjected to graded NaCl stress at concentrations of 0 (CK), 50 (T1), 100 (T2), and 200 (T3) mM. We integrated phenotypic observation, physiological assessment, transcriptomic profiling, and functional gene validation to systematically elucidate its salt tolerance mechanisms. Salt stress inhibited seedling growth and root traits in a concentration-dependent manner, and T3 caused the most severe damage. Osmotic solutes responded di…
