Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Increase Frailty Syndrome in the Elderly.

Musculoskeletal aging is a major public health interesting and strain due to the significant demographic modifications in the population, an … al content closely correlates with muscle mass, and several evidences suggest that osteoporosis and sarcopenia present common pathophysiological factors and show the correlation between low bone mineral density and sarcopenia in both men and women. Then, sarcopenia and osteoporosis, typical features of aging, are often associated with each other and with the …

Clinical relevance of sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, we review sarcopenia in chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aim to present how definitions of sarcopenia from the general population may pertain to those with CKD, its assessment by clinicians and emerging therapies for sarcopenia in CKD. For this review, we limit our description and recommendations to patients with CKD who are not on dialysis. RECENT FINDINGS: Poorer parameters of lean mass, strength and physical function are associated with worsening patient-centered outcomes such as limiting mobility, falls and mortality in CKD; however, the magnitude of th…

The Role of Sarcopenia and Frailty in Hepatic Encephalopathy Management.

Normal regulation of total body and circulating ammonia requires a delicate interplay in ammonia formation and breakdown between several organ systems. In the setting of cirrhosis and portal hypertension, the decreased hepatic clearance of ammonia leads to significant dependence on skeletal muscle for ammonia detoxification; however, cirrhosis is also associated with muscle depletion and decreased functional muscle mass. Thus, patients with diminished muscle mass and sarcopenia may have a decreased ability to compensate for hepatic insufficiency and a higher likelihood of developing physiologi…

Cachexia and sarcopenia: mechanisms and potential targets for intervention.

Cachexia is a multi-organ syndrome associated with cancer and other chronic diseases, characterized by body weight loss, muscle and adipose tissue wasting and inflammation, being often associated with anorexia. Skeletal muscle tissue represents more than 40% of body weight and seems to be one of the main tissues involved in the wasting that occurs during cachexia. Sarcopenia is a degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength associated with healthy ageing. The molecular mechanisms behind cachexia and sarcopenia share some common trends. Muscle wasting is the result of a comb…

Prevalence of sarcopenia in older patients with colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. It is a common finding in older patients and is associated with decreased life expectancy and potentially higher susceptibility to chemotherapy toxicity. This study describes the prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults with early stage colorectal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients ≥70 years old who underwent surgical resection for stage I-III colorectal cancer between 2008 and 2013 were identified from the medical record. Sarcopenia was assessed by measuring the total muscle area on computerized tomogr…

Osteosarcopenia is more than sarcopenia and osteopenia alone.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia and osteopenia/osteoporosis show a high prevalence in old age and incur a high risk for falls, fractures, and further functional decline. Physical performance and bone metabolism in patients suffering from the so-called osteosarcopenia-the combination of sarcopenia and osteopenia-are currently still unknown. AIMS: This study investigates physical performance and bone metabolism in osteosarcopenic, prefrail, community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: 68 prefrail adults between 65 and 94 years were assigned to four groups according to mean DXA results: osteosarcopenic [lo…

From sarcopenia to frailty: a road less traveled.

The physical frailty phenotype consists of fatigue, weight loss, and loss of muscle power. Sarcopenia has been shown to be a major cause of frailty. Six societies including SCWD published a consensus suggesting that all persons older than 70 years of age should be screened for frailty when seeing health professionals. Simple screening tests such as the FRAIL (fatigue, resistance, aerobic, illness, and loss of weight) scale can be used. It is felt that frailty can be treated by exercise (resistance and aerobic), high quality protein, vitamin D, and treatment of the common causes of fatigue. It …

Role and potential mechanisms of anabolic resistance in sarcopenia.

There is pressing need to understand the aging process to better cope with its associated physical and societal costs. The age-related muscle wasting known as sarcopenia is a major contributor to the problems faced by the elderly. By hindering mobility and reducing strength, it greatly diminishes independence and quality of life. In studying the factors that contribute to the development of sarcopenia, the focus is shifting to the study of disordered muscle anabolism. The abnormal response of muscle to previously well-established anabolic stimuli is known as anabolic resistance, and may be a k…

Sarcopenia is predictive of nosocomial infection in care of the elderly.

Protein-energy malnutrition and nosocomial infection (NI) are frequent in elderly patients, and a causal link between the two has often been suggested. The aim of the present study was to identify the nutritional parameters predictive of NI in elderly patients. We assessed on admission 101 patients (sixty-six women, thirty-five men, aged over 65 years) admitted to an acute care of the elderly department. Sarcopenia was detected by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, with appendicular skeletal muscle mass expressed with respect to body area. Weight, BMI, albuminaemia, serum transthyretin and C-re…

Aging-Related Sarcopenia: Metabolic Characteristics and Therapeutic Strategies.

The proportion of the elderly population is gradually increasing as a result of medical care advances, leading to a subsequent surge in geriatric diseases that significantly impact quality of life and pose a substantial healthcare burden. Sarcopenia, characterized by age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and quality, affects a considerable portion of older adults, particularly the elderly, and can result in adverse outcomes such as frailty, fractures, bedridden, hospitalization, and even mortality. Skeletal muscle aging is accompanied by underlying metabolic changes. Therefore, elucidati…

Bidirectional Relationships between Sarcopenia and Pelvic Floor Disorders.

Sarcopenia and pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) are prevalent and often cooccurring conditions in the aging population. However, their bidirectional relationship and underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. This narrative review aims to elucidate this relationship by exploring potential causative interplays, shared pathophysiological mechanisms, and common risk factors. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies focusing on epidemiological associations, interaction mechanisms, and implications for patient care. While epidemiological studies demonstrate associa…

Melatonin protects against sarcopenia in middle-aged mice.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a common age-related disease. Melatonin (MEL) is an age-related endocrine hormone, which displays a crucial role in resisting oxidative stress during aging. Importantly, the antioxidant properties of MEL can be mediated by mitochondria. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, we wondered whether MEL could mitigate oxidative stress caused by mitochondria in sarcopenia. METHODS: The middle-aged mice were administered 5 mg/kg/d and 10 mg/kg/d of MEL for 2 months. Young mice were used as the control group. RESULTS: After treatment with MEL, the grip strength of the fore/hind limbs, runn…
