BACKGROUND: A few reports in the literature point out that in special areas of the body, nevi can have peculiar pseudomelanomatous features. In our routine work, we have met few examples of atypical nevi with peculiar features on the scalp of teenagers. To evaluate the frequency and the biological behaviour of these lesions, we have conducted a complete survey on melanocytic lesions on the scalp in a significant group of patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine nevi of the scalp were from adolescents (12-18 years), 160 from adults, and 30 from children below the age of 12 years.

Lobular capillary hemangioma (pyogenic granuloma) has been reported more frequently in the skin (88%) than in the mucous membranes (12%). Granuloma gravidarum is a pyogenic granuloma that develops during pregnancy, often in the oral mucosa. Estrogens apparently increase the inflammatory response of mucous membranes. In this article, we describe the first case of a granuloma gravidarum of the scalp.

We report a case of scalp melanoma that was found incidentally after the patient complained of pruritic lesions on his scalp. The melanoma was 13 mm in diameter and had a Breslow thickness of 0.25 mm. The incidence of melanoma has been on the rise, with a high incidence occurring in men on the head, neck, and trunk. This case stresses the need to thoroughly examine the entire scalp when performing total body screening examinations for skin cancer.

A case of borderline tuberculoid leprosy involving the hairy scalp is reported. To the best of our knowledge, only two paucibacillary leprosy patients with scalp lesion have been reported, and in only one was the scalp covered with hair.

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumour (EES/PNET) is a rare disease entity. Scalp EES/PNET has been reported rarely. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who had painful and rapidly growing subcutaneous nodes over the scalp and neck. The final diagnosis was EES/PNET after biopsy and immunohistochemical assay. This article retrospectively reviewed a case of epithelioid sarcoma of the scalp; a treatment plan for this type of neoplasm has not been well defined in the literature because of the rarity of sarcomas in general and sarcomas located in the head and neck in particular. No comparative results can be drawn when dealing with such lesion in the scalp. A wide variety of disorders involving the scalp and hair exist that may be encountered in the pediatric and adolescent population. An approach to the differential diagnosis of many of these conditions can be considered once the patient is found to have either alopecia, scaling, or tumors of the scalp. Certainly other causes of scalp or hair disease exist but the more common disorders can be appropriately considered in this manner.
