Effects of novel sulfated-rhamnoglucuronan isolated from Korean seaweed Ulva pertusa on IgA-mediated intestinal-immune system activation in naïve C3H/HeN mice.

A previous study identified a novel sulfated-rhamnoglucuronan structure in Ulva pertusa polysaccharide (UPP). The present study evaluates the intestinal immunostimulatory effects of UPP in naïve C3H/HeN mice. Oral administration of UPP significantly enhanced the secretion of IgA and associated cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, from Peyer's patch (PP) cells in vivo. Additionally, the supernatant from PP cell cultures stimulated the proliferation of bone marrow cells. Histological analysis revealed strong stimulation of PP by UPP, as evidence

Effects of microencapsulated essential oils and seaweed meal on growth performance, digestive enzymes, intestinal morphology, liver functions, and plasma biomarkers in broiler chickens.

Globally, poultry production has increased to meet the demand for animal protein. Traditionally, antibiotic growth promoters have been used to enhance growth performance and prevent infections in commercial poultry practices. However, concerns regarding antimicrobial resistance have triggered interest in alternative solutions, such as essential oils (EOs) and seaweed additives. The aim of the current study was to assess the impact of a microencapsulated blend of EOs (cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and thymol) and Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed meal on growth performance, intestinal function, blood biom…

Evaluation of the effects of amyloid β aggregation from seaweed extracts by a microliter-scale high-throughput screening system with a quantum dot nanoprobe.

Inhibitors of amyloid β (Aβ) aggregation have the potential to serve as lead compounds for anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) agents because Aβ aggregation is a key step in AD pathogenesis. Recently, we developed a novel microliter-scale high-throughput screening (MSHTS) system for Aβ aggregation inhibitors that applied fluorescence microscopic analysis with quantum dot nanoprobes, and attempted to comprehensively screen the inhibitors from spices using this system (Ishigaki et al., PLoS One, 8, e72992, 2013). In this study, we tried to evaluate the inhibitory activities of 11 seaweed extracts on A…

Antioxidant and neuroprotective activity of the extract from the seaweed, Halimeda incrassata (Ellis) Lamouroux, against in vitro and in vivo toxicity induced by methyl-mercury.

A growing body of evidence suggests oxidative stress as part of the toxicity mechanism of methyl-mercury (MeHg) in cell cultures and animal models and so justifies the use of natural antioxidants as therapeutic alternatives. This research examines the effect of an aqueous extract from the marine seaweed Halimeda incrassata (Hi) against the oxidative stress induced by MeHg on in vitro and in vivo models. In GT1-7 mouse hypothalamic cell cultures, the extract of Hi increased cell viability and reduced ROS production after 24-h exposure to MeHgCl. Wistar rats, acutely intoxicated with MeHgCl, had…
