Neonatal jaundice and autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Two meta-analyses concluded that jaundice was associated with an increased risk of autism. We hypothesize that these findings we … suggested a high risk of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: We found a high risk of publication bias, selection bias, and potential confounding in all studies. Based on the low risk of bias studies there was no convincing evidence to support an association between neonatal jaundice and autism. IMPACT: Meta-analysis of data from six low risk of bias studies indica …

Variable selection methods for identifying predictor interactions in data with repeatedly measured binary outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying predictors of patient outcomes evaluated over time may require modeling interactions among variables while addressing within-subject correlation. Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and generalized estimating equations (GEEs) address within-subject correlation, but identifying interactions can be difficult if not hypothesized a priori. We evaluate the performance of several variable selection approaches for clustered binary outcomes to provide guidance for choosing between the methods. METHODS: We conducted simulations comparing stepwise selection, penalized GLMM

Psychotherapy Selection Algorithm (PSA) 1.0: A Work in Progress.

This column presents a first draft of the Psychotherapy Selection Algorithm (PSA 1.0), developed by a workgroup of the American Psychoanalytic Association. The goal of PSA 1.0 is to address bias in psychotherapy selection and to reexamine treatment selection so that it is based on evidence that includes the effectiveness and efficacy of psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis.

An investigation into the potential effects of infrapopulation structure and other sources of sampling error, on population genetic studies of the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum (Trematoda: Digenea).

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma japonicum remains a major challenge to human and animal health. Earlier microsatellite-based studies reported possible definitive-host-specific private alleles within S. japonicum, opening the possibility that different definitive hosts might harbour different parasite strains. Previous investigations have also detected near-identical multilocus genotypes in populations of adult worms - possibly the result of mutations occurring during the asexual (intramolluscan) phase of clonal expansion. Research has also revealed extensive deviations from Hardy-Weinberg Proportions

Validation, replication, and sensitivity testing of Heckman-type selection models to adjust estimates of HIV prevalence.

A recent study using Heckman-type selection models to adjust for non-response in the Zambia 2007 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) found a … specified. The Heckman selection model is a useful tool for assessing the possibility and extent of selection bias in HIV prevalence estimates from sample surveys.

How to assess the external validity of therapeutic trials: a conceptual approach.

BACKGROUND: External validity of study results is an important issue from a clinical point of view. From a methodological point of view, however, the concept of external validity is more complex than it seems to be at first glance. METHODS: Methodological review to address the concept of external validity. RESULTS: External validity refers to the question whether results are generalizable to persons other than the population in the original study. The only formal way to establish the external validity would be to repeat the study for that specific target population. We propose a three-way ap

Bias in surgical research.

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to discuss the various forms of bias in surgical research, including how it impacts validity and how to recognize and avoid it. METHODS: The various factors affecting bias in surgical research's design, execution, and reporting were explored. The impact of these factors on internal and external validity in both observational and randomized controlled trials was examined, and recommendations were made for ameliorating the various biases. RESULTS: Identifying bias when interpreting a trial enables surgeons to assess surgical research's internal and external validity. Avoi

Subject eligibility criteria can substantially influence the results of alcohol-treatment outcome research.

OBJECTIVE: Most alcohol-treatment studies exclude some patients from participation based on particular criteria (e.g., comorbid illegal drug abuse, homelessness). The current study evaluated whether such eligibility criteria can change the outcome results a study obtains. METHOD: Five widely used treatment research eligibility criteria--(1) psychiatric problems, (2) medical problems, (3) social-residential instability, (4) low motivation/noncompliance, and (5) drug problems--were applied to two samples of real-world alcohol patients whose outcomes were known. Comparing outcomes of the samples

Thyrotoxicosis among Hanford, Washington, Downwinders: a community-based health survey.

Sixty cases of thyrotoxicosis (including hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, and toxic goiter), an unexpectedly large number compared with general population data, were reported in a voluntary health survey that included a period of approximately 50 yr, with 801 self-defined "Downwinders" who had lived near the Hanford, Washington, nuclear facility. In another self-selected group of medical patients (n = 423) who were examined over the same time period, only 2 cases of thyrotoxicosis were identified. Evidence is presented that suggests that the effects of bias from self-selection likely did not

Generalizing molecular results arising from incomplete biological samples: expected bias and unexpected findings.

PURPOSE: In molecular epidemiology, obtaining biological samples for all subjects targeted for study is frequently hampered by ethical, clinical, and logistic factors. The extent to which the incompleteness of biological samples could cause bias is rarely analyzed in depth. Here we report some expected bias and some unexpected findings during a study on mutations in the K-ras gene in exocrine pancreatic cancer (EPC). METHODS: In this case-case study, all patients registered with EPC between 1980 and 1990 at two general hospitals were retrospectively identified from the hospital tumor registri

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and blood transfusions: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

A meta-analysis of five published case-control studies that examined the association between previous blood transfusions and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease was performed. The results demonstrated that controls were more likely (p < 0.001, odds ratio = 1.56, 95% confidence interval, 1.22-1.98) to have received previous blood transfusions (18.7%) than Creutzfeld-Jakob disease patients (12.9%), suggesting that selection bias of the control populations had occurred.

Can screening for early-stage prostate cancer be rationalized?

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening identifies prostate cancer at an earlier stage than digital rectal examination alone. The widespread use of PSA as a screening tool has led to a marked increase in the incidence of prostate cancer and an apparent shift toward the diagnosis of earlier stage disease. Proof that PSA-based screening results in a reduction in prostate cancer-related mortality is lacking currently. Therefore, insufficient data are available to determine whether a general screening strategy should be adopted for detecting early-stage prostate cancer. Patients at average

Early ultrasound dating of pregnancy: selection and measurement biases.

Can using early ultrasound examinations to date pregnancy introduce information bias in perinatal research? Our purpose was to identify determinants of early ultrasound examinations and to compare early ultrasound to menstrual history dating. Between January 1987 and June 1989, 1159 white, largely middle class, prenatal patients were contacted for a prospective observational study. 876 (76%) agreed to participate. Of these 764 (87%) met the eligibility criteria for this analysis, namely singleton pregnancy, delivered after 20 weeks (spontaneous or induced, vaginal or c-section), with prenatal

Biased Mutation and Selection in RNA Viruses.

RNA viruses are responsible for some of the worst pandemics known to mankind, including outbreaks of Influenza, Ebola, and COVID-19. One major challenge in tackling RNA viruses is the fact they are extremely genetically diverse. Nevertheless, they share common features that include their dependence on host cells for replication, and high mutation rates. We set out to search for shared evolutionary characteristics that may aid in gaining a broader understanding of RNA virus evolution, and constructed a phylogeny-based data set spanning thousands of sequences from diverse single-stranded RNA vir

Empirical evidence of recruitment bias in a network study of people who inject drugs.

Background: Epidemiologic surveys of people who inject drugs (PWID) can be difficult to conduct because potential participants may fear exposure or legal repercussions. Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a procedure in which subjects recruit their eligible social contacts. The statistical validity of RDS surveys of PWID and other risk groups depends on subjects recruiting at random from among their network contacts. Objectives: We sought to develop and apply a rigorous definition and statistical tests for uniform network recruitment in an RDS survey. Methods: We undertook a detailed study of

Who is our cohort: recruitment, representativeness, baseline risk and retention in the "Watch Me Grow" study?

BACKGROUND: The "Watch Me Grow" (WMG) study examines the current developmental surveillance system in South West Sydney. This paper describes the establishment of the study birth cohort, including the recruitment processes, representativeness, follow-up and participants' baseline risk for future developmental risk. METHODS: Newborn infants and their parents were recruited from two public hospital postnatal wards and through child health nurses during the years 2011-2013. Data was obtained through a detailed participant questionnaire and linked with the participant's electronic medical record

Participation bias in a randomised trial of screening for lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Participation bias might affect the results and the representability of randomised controlled trials. We investigated the degree of socio-demographic and psychosocial participation bias in the Danish Lung Cancer Screening Trial (DLCST). METHODS: In DLCST the questionnaire COS-LC (Consequences of Screening in Lung Cancer) was used to measure the psychosocial aspects of screening. To investigate a difference with a comparable representative sample from the Danish population, we sent out an inclusion questionnaire to 3999 Danes in the age from 50 to 70 years randomly selected from

Is BMD testing appropriate for all menopausal women?

The United States Preventive Services Task Force has provided an evidence-based guideline indicating that bone mineral density (BMD) testing is appropriate for all women aged 65 or older. This does not preclude BMD testing in younger postmenopausal women but places the onus on the treating physician to justify the procedure to the patient and often the patient's insurance carrier. There are very few circumstances in which BMD testing is appropriate for healthy premenopausal women, but BMD testing in younger postmenopausal women is often appropriate: when there is a family history of osteoporos

On robustness of noninferiority clinical trial designs against bias, variability, and nonconstancy.

The regulatory guidelines on noninferiority (NI) trials emphasize constancy not only in the treatment effect over time but also in the trial design, clinical practice, and quality of the trial conduct and execution. In practice, the constancy assumption is generally impossible to justify; often, there are clear reasons to expect a loss of efficacy over time. There are also concerns about the inherent and publication bias in the historical data, and various sources of selection bias in the NI trial design. Thus, a conservative NI margin is often considered. However, different NI margin approach…
