The Potential of Small Effects at the Right Time, on a Large Scale: Commentary on Linardon et al. (2025).

The meta-analysis of self-help intervention for eating disorders (ED) by Linardon and colleagues showed significant, albeit small, effects favoring self-help over the control condition on depression, anxiety, distress, and self-esteem. Despite modest effect sizes, pure self-help offers the potential for high accessibility at low cost, which may lead to a meaningful impact on public health in terms of mental health symptoms that are often co-occurring with ED. There are opportunities to present and package pure self-help in more creative ways than what is currently available (e.g., by integrati

Identification and function prediction of iron-deficiency-responsive microRNAs in citrus leaves.

There is evidence that poor readers are at increased risk for various types of low self-concept-particularly academic self-concept. However, this evidence ignores the heterogeneous nature of poor readers, and hence the likelihood that not all poor readers have low self-concept. The aim of this study was to better understand which types of poor readers have low self-concept. We tested 77 children with poor reading for their age for four types of self-concept, four types of reading, three types of spoken language, and two types of attention. We found that poor readers with poor attention had low

Special section: Self-other distinction in personality disorders.

Problems with self- and interpersonal functioning are defining features of personality disorders (PDs) that seem to stem from impairments in self-other distinction (SOD), that is, the sociocognitive capacity to distinguish between one's own and others' mental and physical experiences. There has been recent renewed interest in this topic across a wide range of fields, from clinical psychology to social neuroscience and experimental psychology. This special section on "Self-Other Distinction in Personality Disorders" is therefore very timely, particularly given the shift to dimensional views of

The power of images: hysteric symptoms as representations of the self.

The diagnosis of hysteria, despite being fundamental in the birth of psychiatry, has currently been removed from nosography. This choice speaks of the renunciation by contemporary nosography of understanding psychopathological conditions as structural entities, with internal coherence and meaningfulness - which on the contrary should be reconsidered. Hysteria represents a mirror of social and cultural changes. The metamorphoses throughout history of hysterical symptoms reflect the changing interests of medicine (the greater legitimation of somatic symptoms over psychic ones) and, in general, m

Influence of self-referential processing on depression and anxiety: A meta-analysis of cognitive biases and task variants.

Biased self-referential processing is a component of both depression and anxiety. Although research on self-referential processing in relation to depression and anxiety shows a consistent direction, studies differ widely in methodology and sample compositions, varying the magnitudes of findings. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether mean differences in self-referential processing or continuous relations between self-referential processing and anxiety/depression, differed as a function of sample composition, assessment type, score calculation method, or mood induc

Self-image Building protocol for treating depression in hypnosis.

This article explains the method of treating depression with an intervention called Self-Image Building. Several antecedents or correlates of depression are briefly discussed as they form a gestalt backdrop for the many therapeutic approaches that have been researched and promoted as treatment or solutions to depression. The rationale and construction of the intervention is illustrated with a brief case example. Self-Image Building is discussed in the context of other theories of self-image, over-generalization, negativity bias, and as an internal discriminative stimulus for performance. Self-

The self in pain.

Chronic pain can be highly distressing, disabling and complex. The experience of living with chronic pain often leads to a fundamental struggle with one's sense of self and identity. In this article, we briefly review the wide range of conceptualisations of self in pain research. We then introduce a contextual behavioural conceptualisation of self, a more recent approach to self, and discuss its application and relevant evidence in chronic pain. We recommend that it is time to organize and integrate perspectives on self in relation to chronic pain so that research can proceed with less potenti

The association between political identity centrality and cancelling proclivity.

Augmented by the rise of social media, contemporary culture has increasingly witnessed the phenomenon of "cancellation" - that is, a brand's swift and public fall from grace, catalyzed through digital platforms like Twitter and, in turn, traditional media. We are the first to examine individual difference predictors of cancelling proclivity. We explore the relationship between a novel individual difference, political identity centrality (the extent to which one's political identity [e.g., liberal, conservative] is central to self-concept), and individuals' propensity to seek retribution from a

Greater self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism in severe alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionistic individuals present exaggerated performance standards, generating a constant search for flawlessness and a high tendency to self-criticize. Dominant models distinguish three dimensions of perfectionism: namely, self-oriented, socially prescribed and other-oriented. Perfectionism constitutes a vulnerability factor for psychopathological disorders, but its role in severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) remains unexplored. METHODS: Sixty-five recently detoxified patients with SAUD and 65 matched controls completed a perfectionism questionnaire (the Hewitt Multidimensional

Do College Freshmen Who Engage More in Online Social Comparison Tend to Be More Confused About Themselves? The Roles of Rumination and Self-Compassion.

Online social comparisons play a vital role in adolescents and young adults' self-development. This study extended research on the influence of online social comparisons on self-concept clarity among college freshmen. This study investigated the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between online social comparisons and self-concept clarity among college freshmen and further examined the moderating effect of self-compassion on this mediational pathway. A sample of 975 Chinese university freshmen were recruited to complete the Online Social Comparisons Scale, Self-Concept Clarity Sca

Participatory development and proof-of-concept of an intersectionality-informed art-based group intervention for BIPoC girls.

While racism and its negative mental health impact are widespread problems for BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) girls in Germany, intersectionality-informed psychological interventions remain unavailable. To address this gap, this study piloted an youth-informed art-based group intervention designed to strengthen girls’ internal resources (e.g., self-worth, self-efficacy) and reduce mental health symptoms. Conducted in three phases, it involved: (1) a focus group with BIPoC girls (n = 8) to explore needs and preferences; (2) pilot testing of a self-reflective weekly journal to as

Attitude Toward Violence and its Relationship With Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy Among Iranian Women.

The most widespread form of violence against women is domestic violence, which is associated with social and psychological consequences. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between violence and self-esteem and self-efficacy in 496 women referred to Jahrom Women's Clinic. Convenience sampling was performed and data were collected using the Violence Against Women Survey Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Sherer General Self-Efficacy Scale. The prevalence of violence was 47.4%. Approximately 20.6% of the sample was subjected to physical violence and 44.2% was subj

Self-structure and emotional experience.

Two studies examine individual differences in affective reactivity by linking emotional experience to cognitive self-structure. Consistent with the view that individuals with an evaluative compartmentalised self-structure are emotionally reactive, we find that evaluative compartmentalisation is associated with the experience of, and desire for, high-arousal positive (HAP) affect, whereas evaluative integration is associated with the experience of low-arousal positive (LAP) and low-arousal negative affect and the desire for LAP affect. Although compartmentalised individuals are less granular in

Redefining working identity in career transitions: The role of mindfulness and self-regulation.

Career transitions require individuals to fundamentally redefine their working identity-the amalgam of professional roles, relationships, and narratives that constitutes one's sense of self at work. Although Ibarra's seminal "test-and-learn" model has advanced the current understanding of how identity transitions unfold, the psychological mechanisms that enable or constrain this process remain underspecified. The purpose of this research paper is to develop a propositional theoretical framework that integrates mindfulness and self-regulation into the working identity transition process. Drawin

Identity concerns and older people's use of assistive technology: A scoping review.

This scoping review explores conceptualizations of identity in relation to older adults' use of assistive technology and describes patterns of AT use and emotional experiences associated with identity-related concerns. Searches were conducted in six databases (n = 1508) limited to peer-reviewed papers published between 2000 and 2022; resulting in the inclusion of 33 relevant papers. The literature evidences an array of overlapping conceptualizations within identity and self. Older adults' experiences with assistive technology are nuanced by ambivalent emotions; marked by both positive - autono

How we compare: A new approach to assess aspects of the comparison process for appearance-based standards and their associations with individual differences in wellbeing and personality measures.

We introduce a novel approach to assess habitual comparison processes, while distinguishing between different types of comparison standards. Several comparison theories (e.g., social) suggest that self-evaluations use different standards to inform self-perception and are associated with wellbeing and personality. We developed the Comparison Standards Scale for Appearance (CSS-A) to examine self-reported engagement with social, temporal, criteria-based, dimensional, and counterfactual comparisons for upward and downward standards in relation to appearance. The scale was completed by three hundr

Relational self-evaluations in dissociation: Implicit self-rejection?

OBJECTIVE: Schematic self-knowledge consists of internal representations that shape perceptions of how the self is related to one's surroundings and other people. These representations may include dysfunctional implicit self-evaluations, such as associations of the self with negative attributes like shame, in trauma-spectrum disorders. The current study examines whether a negative relational self-association, that is, linking the self with rejection, characterizes dissociation. METHOD: One hundred six community participants with diverse early interpersonal experiences and mental health outcom

Changes in the self during cognitive behavioural therapy for social anxiety disorder: A systematic review.

A consistent feature across cognitive-behavioural models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the central role of the self in the emergence and maintenance of the disorder. The strong emphasis placed on the self in these models and related empirical research has also been reflected in evidence-based treatments for the disorder. This systematic review provides an overview of the empirical literature investigating the role of self-related constructs (e.g., self-beliefs, self-images, self-focused attention) proposed in cognitive models of SAD, before examining how these constructs are modified dur
