Amplicon deep sequencing of kelch13 in Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Senegal.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, the Senegalese National Malaria Control Programme recommended artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) with artemether-lumefantrine as the first-line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. To date, multiple mutations associated with artemisinin delayed parasite clearance have been described in Southeast Asia in the Pfk13 gene, such as Y493H, R539T, I543T and C580Y. Even though ACT remains clinically and parasitologically efficacious in Senegal, the spread of resistance is possible as shown by the earlier emergence of resistance to chloroquine in Sout…

Yellow fever outbreak in Kaffrine, Senegal 1996: epidemiological and entomological findings.

In November 1996 a yellow fever (YF) outbreak occurred near Kaffrine in the central part of Senegal. Thirty-six deaths were notified, all children under 15 years of age. The YF diagnosis was confirmed by MAC-ELISA or by virus isolation. The immune status against YF virus of a sample population of 449 individuals was determined, and 31 confirmed cases and 69 asymptomatic cases were reported. Distribution of YF cases and incidence rate decreased with age, while the attack rate was stable in all age groups. Larva indices were high and Aedes aegypti was common in all villages, causing man-to-man t…

Child mortality after high-titre measles vaccines: prospective study in Senegal.

The use of Edmonston-Zagreb high-titre (EZ-HT) vaccine at age 6 months has been recommended for countries in which measles before the age of 9 months is a substantial cause of death, but little is known about the long-term effects of high-titre live measles vaccines given early in life. In a randomised vaccine trial in a rural area of Senegal, children were randomly assigned at birth to three vaccine groups: EZ-HT at 5 months (n = 336); Schwarz high-titre (SW-HT) at 5 months (n = 321); and placebo at 5 months followed by standard low-titre Schwarz vaccine at 10 months (standard: n = 358). All …

Heterogeneous returns to antenatal care: Evidence from childhood immunization in Senegal.

Antenatal care (ANC) serves both as a medical input and as a source of health information in the child health production function. We use seven waves of the Senegal Demographic and Health Surveys, matched to regional health-facility data, to estimate the effect of ANC adherence on childhood vaccination outcomes. We address endogeneity arising from unobserved heterogeneity in ANC utilization using a two-stage copula-based control-function approach. We find that ANC adherence has no effect on the composite measure of full immunization, but significantly increases uptake of two injectable vaccine…

Reconstruction of historical malaria transmission in Senegal using multiplex serocatalytic models.

The advent of multiplexing technologies, allowing antibodies to hundreds of antigens to be measured in a single test, has led to enormous increases in the amount of data generated by serological surveys. New modelling methods are required to exploit this data. This study extends serocatalytic models to consider up to three antibody responses targeting the same pathogen simultaneously. These models were fitted to data from cross-sectional serological surveys of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the Senegalese villages of Dielmo and Ndiop, and model predictions were validated against 22 years of …

Well-being amid (im)mobility struggles: Youth's experiences in Casamance, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Large numbers of young people worldwide, especially in the Global South, wish to migrate but lack the capacity to do so, with potentially detrimental consequences for their well-being and mental health. Termed 'involuntary immobility', this phenomenon is numerically larger than migration, but remains for now a largely underexplored area of research. Focusing on young Senegalese living in Casamance, this paper contributes to the limited literature on the implications of immobility for subjective well-being. It does so by (i) considering different degrees and types of involuntary imm…

Reemergence of Sylvatic Dengue Virus Serotype 2 in Kedougou, Senegal, 2020.

In 2020, a sylvatic dengue virus serotype 2 infection outbreak resulted in 59 confirmed dengue cases in Kedougou, Senegal, suggesting those strains might not require adaptation to reemerge into urban transmission cycles. Large-scale genomic surveillance and updated molecular diagnostic tools are needed to effectively prevent dengue virus infections in Senegal.

Shifting Patterns of Influenza Circulation during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Senegal.

Historically low levels of seasonal influenza circulation were reported during the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic and were mainly attributed to implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions. In tropical regions, influenza's seasonality differs largely, and data on this topic are scarce. We analyzed data from Senegal's sentinel syndromic surveillance network before and after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to assess changes in influenza circulation. We found that influenza shows year-round circulation in Senegal and has 2 distinct epidemic peaks: during January-March and during the…

Schistosomiasis Sustained Control Program in Ethnic Groups Around Ninefescha (Eastern Senegal).

Schistosomiasis is the second most significant parasitic disease in children in several African countries. For this purpose, the "Programme National de Lutte contre les Bilharzioses" (PNLB) was developed in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to control this disease in Senegal. However, geographic isolation of Bedik ethnic groups challenged implementation of the key elements of the schistosomiasis program in eastern Senegal, and therefore, a hospital was established in Ninefescha to improve access to health care as well as laboratory support for this population. The program we…

[Pneumocystis pneumonia biological diagnosis at Fann Teaching Hospital in Dakar, Senegal].

BACKGROUND: Data relative to Pneumocystis pneumonia in sub-Saharan Africa are not well known. Weakness of the technical material and use of little sensitive biological tools of diagnosis are among the evoked reasons. The objective of this study is to update the data of the disease at the Fann Teaching Hospital in Dakar and to estimate biological methods used in diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive longitudinal study was carried out from January 5th, 2009 to October 31st, 2011 in the parasitology and mycology laboratory of the Fann Teaching Hospital in Dakar. The bronchoalveolar lav

Importation and containment of Ebola virus disease - Senegal, August-September 2014.

On August 29, 2014, Senegal confirmed its first case of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in a Guinean man, aged 21 years, who had traveled from Guinea to Dakar, Senegal, in mid-August to visit family. Senegalese medical and public health personnel were alerted about this patient after public health staff in Guinea contacted his family in Senegal on August 27. The patient had been admitted to a referral hospital in Senegal on August 26. He was promptly isolated, and a blood sample was sent for laboratory confirmation; Ebola was confirmed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction at Institut…

Antimicrobial resistance in Shigella species isolated in Dakar, Senegal (2004-2006).

From May 2004 to October 2006, a prospective study was carried out in Dakar, Senegal, to update information about the antimicrobial susceptibility of Shigella spp. isolated from stool specimens. Among the 165 non-duplicate strains collected, 81 (49%) were identified as Shigella flexneri, 75 (45%) as Shigella sonnei, 5 (3%) as Shigella boydii, and 4 (2%) as Shigella dysenteriae. Disk diffusion testing revealed that the majority of isolates were resistant to sulphonamides, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, streptomycin, and tetracycline (respective overall resistance rates: 90, 90, 96, and 94%). Mo…

Interpreting low praziquantel cure rates of Schistosoma mansoni infections in Senegal.

Praziquantel is currently the drug of choice for the treatment of schistosomiasis. Selective treatment of Schistosoma mansoni infections in various endemic countries usually present cure rates of >70% when using the standard dose of 40 mg kg(-1) body weight of praziquantel. However, unusually low cure rates (18-38%) have been reported from Senegal, raising fears for emergence of resistance (or tolerance) to praziquantel. One major problem is the precise quantitative interpretation of cure rates, which allows an unequivocal distinction between drug failure and normal drug performance. This arti…
