A perspective of randomness in a clinical test of olfactory performance.

Random walks describe stochastic processes characterized by a sequence of unpredictable changes in a random variable with no correlation to past changes. This report describes the random walk component of a clinical sensory test of olfactory performance. The precise definition of this stochastic process allows the establishment of precise diagnostic cut-offs for the identification of olfactory loss. Within the Sniffin`Sticks olfactory test battery, odor discrimination (D) and odor identification (I) are assessed by four- and three-alternative forced-choice designs, respectively. Meanwhile, the

Pediatric olfactory home testing using regular household items: A cross-over validation study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an olfactory test that can be conducted by an untrained person using common household items and to introduce a German version of the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale for Children (CPS-C(de)). METHODOLOGY: This olfactory home test was developed in phases including evaluation of odors for suitability in a home setting. Parents of 50 children (ages 6-17) were then equipped with instruction manuals and participants were tested twice in a cross-over design. A validated pediatric olfactory test (the Universal Sniff test (U-Sniff)) served as the comparative gold standard. Additional

Assessment of olfactory function by Sniffin' sticks in bakery workers exposed to flour dust.

OBJECTIVE: This study used the Sniffin' Sticks test battery to evaluate olfactory function in employees of a bakery exposed to flour dust. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study enrolled 43 individuals with exposure (i.e., to flour) plus 41 healthy volunteers as controls. Olfactory function was assessed in these subjects through the use of the Sniffin' Sticks test battery. The overall score was calculated by adding up the scores for each of the 12 separate odors. A score of 6 or less was deemed anosmia, from 7 to 10 hyposmia, and a score of 11 or 12 was taken to indicate no impairment of olfaction.

Neural representations of own-voice in the human auditory cortex.

We have a keen sensitivity when it comes to the perception of our own voices. We can detect not only the differences between ourselves and others, but also slight modifications of our own voices. Here, we examined the neural correlates underlying such sensitive perception of one's own voice. In the experiments, we modified the subjects' own voices by using five types of filters. The subjects rated the similarity of the presented voices to their own. We compared BOLD (Blood Oxygen Level Dependent) signals between the voices that subjects rated as least similar to their own voice and those they

Acupuncture is associated with a positive effect on odour discrimination in patients with postinfectious smell loss-a controlled prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Smell disorders are common in the general population and occur e.g., after infections, trauma or idiopathically Treatment strategies for smell loss range from surgery, medication to olfactory training, depending on the pathology, but they are limited This study examined the effect of acupuncture on olfactory function. METHODS: Sixty patients with smell loss following infections of the upper respiratory tract were included in this investigation Half of the study group were randomly assigned to verum acupuncture and the other half to sham acupuncture Olfaction was measured by mean

Comparison of tactile sensitivity measured with a new digital esthesiometer (Beam Test) relative to Semmes-Weinstein monofilament analog esthesiometer.

The assessment of tactile sensitivity uses many tests, of which monofilaments are considered the best. The aim of this study was to develop a tactile sensitivity test, similar to the monofilament test, which eliminates the error risk related to manipulations by the observer, and to establish a correspondence scale. We studied 29 healthy subjects (18 women and 11 men) with a mean age of 27.8 years. The Semmes-Weinstein monofilament (SWM) analog esthesiometer and a digital beam esthesiometer (DBE) were used. We evaluated the tactile sensitivity threshold on the fingertip of each subject's domina

[Aerobic exercises worsen the detection threshold of short H2S pulses].

BACKGROUND: Whether smelling is reduced during aerobic exercise is described contradictorily in the sparse literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To clarify this question, in healthy subjects the passive detection thresholds for short H2S stimuli were determined by means of a flow olfactometer in an inspiration-synchronous manner during nasal breathing in a staircase procedure during a resting phase, a subsequent submaximal load on a bicycle ergometer and a subsequent recovery phase. In parallel, the measurements of heart rate, blood pressure, blood lactate and body temperature were monitored to c

Unilateral Amblyopia Affects Two Eyes: Fellow Eye Deficits in Amblyopia.

Unilateral amblyopia is a visual disorder that arises after selective disruption of visual input to one eye during critical periods of development. In the clinic, amblyopia is understood as poor visual acuity in an eye that was deprived of pattern vision early in life. By its nature, however, amblyopia has an adverse effect on the development of a binocular visual system and the interactions between signals from two eyes. Visual functions aside from visual acuity are impacted, and many studies have indicated compromised sensitivity in the fellow eye even though it demonstrates normal visual ac

Human olfaction: a constant state of change-blindness.

Paradoxically, although humans have a superb sense of smell, they don't trust their nose. Furthermore, although human odorant detection thresholds are very low, only unusually high odorant concentrations spontaneously shift our attention to olfaction. Here we suggest that this lack of olfactory awareness reflects the nature of olfactory attention that is shaped by the spatial and temporal envelopes of olfaction. Regarding the spatial envelope, selective attention is allocated in space. Humans direct an attentional spotlight within spatial coordinates in both vision and audition. Human olfactor

Thresholds vary between spatial and temporal forced-choice paradigms: the case of lateral interactions in peripheral vision.

Psychophysicists use spatial or temporal two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) paradigms interchangeably. Thus, experiments with the same general goal are carried out using one or the other paradigm by distinct or even the same research groups. For example, this situation has occurred both in studies on visual sensitivity in dyslexia and in studies on lateral interactions in peripheral vision. Conflicting results in either field (e.g. whether or not dyslexics have a visual deficit and whether or not peripheral detection is facilitated by the presence of flankers) appear to be resolved on the su

[Sense of smell in patients with bilateral nasal polyposis].

INTRODUCTION: Sense of smell is susceptible to various changes, both in physiological and in numerous pathological conditions. Of quantitative disorders of smell, hyposmia and anosmia are quite common, whereas of qualitative disorders parosmia is most frequent. The aim of this paper was to examine impact of bilateral nasal polyposis on olfactory function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research was carried out at the Nose, Ear and Throat Clinic in Novi Sad. It included 80 examinees, 40 (20 male, 20 female) with bilateral nasal polyposis, while 40 examinees belonged to the control group (20 male, 2

Sensibility of the breast after reduction mammaplasty.

Changes in breast sensibility after reduction mammaplasty remain a controversial subject and most previous studies report only qualitative results. There is more accurate measuring of the sensibility of the skin with the Pressure-Specified Sensory Device (PSSD), which measures the pressure perception of the skin in grams per square millimeter. The evaluation of breast sensibility before and after reduction mammaplasty using the upper medial pedicle technique was undertaken in 25 patients. The PSSD was used to measure one dynamic point threshold in nine points of the breast during the preoperat

Hyperalgesia during sedation: effects of barbiturates and propofol in the rat.

Subhypnotic doses of thiopentone are considered to possess antianalgesic or hyperalgesic properties. In this study, we have tested the hypothesis that the coincidence of sedation and hyperalgesia is a property of both barbiturate and non-barbiturate anaesthetic agents. In a randomized, prospective, blinded study, the effects of slow (20 min) iv infusions of thiopentone, pentobarbitone, methohexitone or propofol on nociceptive threshold were measured in rats by tail pressure analgesimetry and compared with saline-infused control animals. Nociceptive thresholds were correlated with measurements

The effect of the hypermobility syndrome on knee joint proprioception.

Proprioceptive sensory feedback is utilized by the central nervous system for conscious appreciation of the position and movement of the body and limbs. In patients with the hypermobility syndrome (HMS), it has been suggested that there is alteration of proprioceptive acuity. Proprioceptive performance of the knee joint was investigated in 10 female subjects who suffered from HMS using a threshold detection paradigm (accurate determination of the onset and direction of knee joint displacement at constant angular velocity). Compared to age- and sex-matched controls, HMS subjects showed signific

In vivo determination of concentration-effect curves of local anaesthetics in man.

In clinical use, the concentrations of local anaesthetics at the site of action are unknown. With the method described here, concentrations of local anaesthetics can be predetermined and kept constant at the site of action. In six volunteers, a blister was raised on the ventral surface of the forearm. After removal of the epithelium, the blister base was rinsed continuously with carbogenated Tyrode's solution with and without increasing concentrations of bupivacaine (Carbostesin) for 15 min each. The effects of bupivacaine were determined by changes in the perception (tactile sensation) of dro

[Disorders of pain perception in schizophrenia].

Starting from a case of marked pain insensitivity in a patient suffering from catatonic schizophrenia we state in this paper that analgesia seems to be an ubiquitous phenomenon which is not only caused by physical disorders of the central nervous system. Different models of interpretation as to be found in scientific literature are reviewed. On the basis of today's physiological knowledge, five hypotheses on causal explanation of pain insensitivity in schizophrenics are discussed: Hypalgesia and analgesia are an expression of motorial inability to react; a consequence of a disorder of consciou

Quantitative evaluation of hypnotically suggested hyperaesthesia and analgesia by painful laser stimulation.

The ability to reduce both clinically and experimentally induced pain by hypnotic suggestion of analgesia is well known. However, the nature of hypnotic analgesia still remains uncertain. Attempts to demonstrate and identify specific psychophysiological mechanisms have, so far, been unsatisfactory. Methodological problems in inducing pain and monitoring physiological responses may be the reason for this lack of success. In the present study, we have attempted to eliminate some of these methodological problems. The sensory and pain thresholds to laser stimulation were determined, and the laser-

Tenderness in 75 anatomic sites. Distinguishing fibromyalgia patients from controls.

We studied tenderness at 75 unilateral anatomic locations in 10 fibromyalgia patients and 10 normal control subjects to determine which sites best identified patients with fibromyalgia. Using a dolorimeter, the mean amount of pressure required to elicit tenderness was significantly lower in patients than in controls at 19 sites (P less than 0.001). Of the previously proposed tender points, only 2 were included in those 19 best discriminating points. Fifteen of the 19 best discriminating points were clustered in regions around the anterior shoulder, anterior chest, posterior scapula, and medial
