Set-shifting and its relation to clinical and personality variables in full recovery of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: First, this study aimed to explore whether set-shifting is inefficient after full recovery of anorexia nervosa (recAN). Second, this study wanted to explore the relation of set-shifting to clinical and personality variables. METHOD: A total of 100 recAN women were compared with 100 healthy women. Set-shifting was assessed with Berg's Card Sorting Test. Expert interviews yielded assessments for the inclusion/exclusion criteria, self-ratings for clinical and personality variables. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy control group, the recAN participants achieved fewer categories, sho

Base rates, contingencies, and prediction behavior.

A skew in the base rate of upcoming events can often provide a better cue for accurate predictions than a contingency between signals and events. The authors study prediction behavior and test people's sensitivity to both base rate and contingency; they also examine people's ability to compare the benefits of both for prediction. They formalize these notions and propose a new measure of the regularity in the environment (ExpPA). In two experiments they test whether the notions underlying this measure capture prediction behavior. In the first experiment, they compare participants' prediction be

Alcohol and aggression without consumption. Alcohol cues, aggressive thoughts, and hostile perception bias.

Researchers and the lay public have long known of a link between alcohol and aggression. However, whether this link results from alcohol's pharmacological effects or is merely an artifact of the belief that alcohol has been consumed (i.e., placebo effect) has been debated. The current experiments examined the propensity for alcohol-related cues to elicit aggressive thoughts and hostile perceptions in the absence of alcohol or placebo consumption. In Experiment 1, participants made faster lexical decisions concerning aggression-related words following alcohol-related primes compared with neutra

US-inflation in a differential odor-conditioning paradigm is not robust: relevance for medically unexplained symptoms.

Reported somatic symptoms without clear relation to physiological processes are studied. A learning paradigm was used with two odors (CSs) and the inhalation of CO(2)-enriched air (US), while measuring symptom levels and respiratory behavior. After paring one odor with the CO(2)-enriched air and the other odor with air, half of the participants received a US-inflation manipulation (information manipulation and enhanced US). Subsequently, all participants received both odors with air (test). A difference between the odor previously paired with CO(2)-enriched air and the odor previously paired w

A priori expectancy bias in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have indicated that phobic participants tend to overassociate fear-relevant stimuli and aversive outcomes, i.e, they show a covariation bias. Such a bias seems to be a powerful way to confirm danger expectations and enhance fear. Therefore, a covariation bias might be an important factor in the maintenance of fear. METHODS: To investigate a covariation bias in patients with panic disorder, we had 29 patients and 29 healthy control participants rate the a priori probabilities with which they would expect pictures of mushrooms, spiders, erotic scenes, and emergency s

Expectancy and tolerance: a study of acute alcohol intoxication using the balanced placebo design.

Interactive effects of expectancy and alcohol dose on CNS functioning were examined in subjects differing in degree of dependence on alcohol, using the balanced placebo design. Male subjects (N = 30), 10 severely-, 10 moderately- and 10 nondependent on alcohol, were tested with the Klove-Matthews Motor Steadiness Battery before and after drinking. The administered alcohol dose yielded .07 mg/dl mean blood alcohol level. Expectations about alcohol resulted in impaired sensorimotor coordination in severely dependent alcoholics, as compared to expectations of soft drinks. Moderately dependent sub

The spider does not always win the fight for attention: Disengagement from threat is modulated by goal set.

Stimulus-driven preferential attention to threat can be modulated by goal-driven attention. However, it remains unclear how this goal-driven modulation affects specific attentional components implied in threat interference. We hypothesise that goal-driven modulation most strongly impacts delayed disengagement from threat. A spatial cueing task was used that disentangles delayed disengagement from attentional capture by tightly manipulating the locus of attention at the time of target onset. Different top-down goals were induced by instructing participants to identify bird/fish targets (Experim

Executive functions in obsessive-compulsive disorder: state or trait deficits?

OBJECTIVE: Despite the neuropsychology literature providing reliable evidence of impaired executive functions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), to date it has not been determined whether these deficits are trait-related (independent of symptomatology) or state-dependent (dependent on symptomatology). The current research examines the executive functions in OCD in a comprehensive manner and, for the first time, assesses the stability of these deficits over the developmental course of the disorder. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, Study 1 examined the executive functions (set shift

Type 1 Diabetes and COVID-19: the level of anxiety, stress and the general mental health in comparison to healthy control.

OBJECTIVES: Assessment of mental state of patients with T1DM - the level of anxiety, stress and general mental health in the stressful conditions of an epidemic. Moreover, it was checked whether the stress response to the epidemic in the T1DM group differed from that in the control group. This is the first study to address these questions in the type 1 diabetes population in Poland. METHODS: An e-mail was sent to all T1DM patients under the care of a diabetes clinic with information about the possibility of online consultation with a psychologist / psychiatrist, with a set of psychological te

Differential roles of thought suppression and dispositional mindfulness in posttraumatic stress symptoms and craving.

Exposure to traumatic events often results in severe distress which may elicit self-medication behaviors. Yet, some individuals exposed to trauma do not develop post-traumatic stress symptoms and comorbid addictive impulses. In the wake of traumatic events, psychological processes like thought suppression and mindfulness may modulate post-traumatic stress and craving for substances. We examined the differential roles of mindfulness and suppression in comorbid post-traumatic stress and craving among a sample of 125 persons with extensive trauma histories and psychiatric symptoms in residential

Cognitive factors in panic disorder, agoraphobic avoidance and agoraphobia.

There remains a lack of consensus regarding the possibility that especially high levels of panic-related cognitions characterise panic disorder with agoraphobia. We administered the Anxiety Sensitivity Index, the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire and the Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies Scale as well as measures of agoraphobic avoidance to patients diagnosed with panic disorder with agoraphobia (n=75) and without agoraphobia (n=26). Patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia did not score significantly higher on any of the cognitive variables than did panic disorder patients without agora

Concept discrimination learning by preschool children using facial stimuli differing in age, sex, race, and eyeglasses.

In two experiments, the relative salience of the variables age, sex, race, and eyeglasses was determined with the use of a discrimination learning task and preschool-age Ss. The stimuli for the task were 112 frontal head and shoulder color photographs arranged in pairs. In both experiments, sex discrimination was the easiest to learn, followed by race and age, which did not differ from each other. Each of the variables of sex, age, and race, however, proved to be more salient than glasses which was not learned by any of the 19 Ss who were given a glasses discrimination problem in Experiment 1.

Deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning.

Understanding how cognition shapes behavior across contexts remains a fundamental challenge for many disciplines. In particular, for the optimism heuristic-i.e., the tendency to overweight positive (relative to negative) information-knowledge remains fragmented, with models developed in specific domains in isolation. Here, we present a unifying computational framework by deriving the deterministic dynamics of distributional multi-agent reinforcement learning. Our approach discretizes return distributions through a finite set of neurons, consistent with recent empirical findings on distribution

The osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP).

The osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), although described over 40 years ago, remains the keratoprosthesis of choice for end-stage corneal blindness not amenable to penetrating keratoplasty. It is particularly resilient to a hostile environment such as the dry keratinized eye resulting from severe Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, trachoma, and chemical injury. Its rigid optical cylinder gives excellent image resolution and quality. The desirable properties of the theoretical ideal keratoprosthesis is described. The indications, contraindications, and patient assessmen

The effect of order of testing in functional performance in persons with and without chronic back pain.

Batteries of individually standardized physical and functional tests are commonly used to assess persons with chronic back pain disability. The order of testing may affect performance on later tests. One hundred and fifty patients with > 3 months of back pain disability underwent a multidisciplinary Spine Team Assessment involving Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pain Psychology, and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor assessments at a university spine clinic. Seventeen back healthy volunteers performed the physical component of the assessment. For the volunteers the order of testing wa

Disrupted expected value signaling in youth with disruptive behavior disorders to environmental reinforcers.

OBJECTIVE: Youth with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), have difficulties in reinforcement-based decision making, the neural basis of which is poorly understood. Studies examining decision making in youth with DBD have revealed reduced reward responses within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex/orbitofrontal cortex (vmPFC/OFC), increased responses to unexpected punishment within the vmPFC and striatum, and reduced use of expected value information in the anterior insula cortex and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex during

Toward a Psychology of Science: A Dynamic Cognitive Model of the Evolution of Scientific Theories.

Responding to a recent call for the development of a psychology of science, we examine how scientists manage empirical anomalies, a routine yet consequential challenge in scientific practice, and how their responses shape theory development. We argue that defensive anomaly-reduction strategies, which allow researchers to preserve an initial theoretical claim, can generate important secondary benefits. During the emergence phase of a theory, they foster auxiliary revisions that may reduce underfitting and place a fragile theory on a growth trajectory. During the exploitation phase of establishe
