Electrochemical stimulation of the hypothalamus of 23-day-old female rats induced precocious puberty as judged by occurrence of vaginal opening, the degree of uterine hypertrophy, changes in ovarian steroid content and incidence of first ovulation. Three types of responses were observed: (I) pubertal ovulation within 96 h; (II) pubertal ovulation within 120 h, and (III) vaginal opening at 120 h not followed by ovulation. Two competing hypotheses concerning the effects of stressful environments on the onset of puberty were tested using longitudinal data for a sample of boys from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Paternal alcoholism and maternal social position were used as indicators of family stress. School placement was monitored from school entry to 14 years of age. Teachers rated the boys' disruptive and anxious behaviors, while the boys reported on parenting behaviors at 10 years of age. BACKGROUND: Teleost fish are known to respond to environmental manipulation, which makes them an ideal model animal for testing relationships between the environment and behavior. The Siamese fighting fish, Betta splendens, is a solitary, highly territorial fish that displays fierce stereotyped aggressive behavior toward conspecifics or members of other species. Adult fish, especially males, are generally housed in isolation in captivity. Here we report evidence that an enriched rearing environment can decrease the level of aggression in bettas and enable adults to be housed in groups.
