[Mycoplasma genitalium--a new challenge in sexually transmitted diseases].

Although Mycoplasma genitalium was described 20 years ago, the knowledge concerning it is still limited. The publications in the area are surprisingly few in number, especially considering that the pathogen is rather common and has been connected with a number of different urogenital diseases. The PCR technique has made it possible to perform investigations on a large scale, which might elucidate the pathogenic role of M. genitalium in the urogenital tract. However, it seems well established that M. genitalium causes non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). The mycoplasma behaves almost identically to

[Epidemiological surveillance of sexually-transmitted diseases. Spain 1995-2003].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem due to their morbidity, complications and sequels, and also by their relationships with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Several countries have been described a resurgence of STIs since the mid-1990's. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Descriptive study of the STIs monitored by epidemiological surveillance, using as source of information the Spanish National Network of Epidemiological Surveillance data, from 1995 to 2003. RESULTS: In 2003, 1069 new cases of gonorrhoea (rate: 2.55 per 100,000 populati

[Sexually transmitted diseases in adolescence: study of risk factors].

Sexually transmitted diseases are frequent in adolescence and facilitates HIV contamination. The early age limit of the first sexual intercourse, the diversity of partners, the habit of not using condoms and illicit drug abuse are pointed out as risk factors for sexual transmitted disease. We interviewed 356 adolescents who sought medical attendance at the Adolescent Health Study Center of The State University of Rio de Janeiro between August/2001 and July/2002 regarding their sexuality and to identify risk behaviors. Periodical analysis and chi-square tests were performed on the collected dat…

Overview of incidence of sexually transmitted diseases in Kuwait.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are the most common infections afflicting mankind. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, the global incidence in 1995 of new cases of selected curable STDs, (gonorrhea, chlamydial infection, syphilis, and trichomoniasis) was 333 million. They are now the most common group of notifiable infectious diseases in most countries, particularly in the age group of 15-50 years, and in infants. They assume significance in view of the high incidence of acute infections, complications and sequelae, socioeconomic impact, role in increasing transmis…

Selected sexually transmitted diseases and their relationship to HIV.

Although sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are underreported and underrecognized, they are a major source of morbidity, mortality, and represent a major socioeconomic cost in developing and industrialized nations. Individuals who develop STDs are often coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Coinfection with HIV both facilitates the natural history of STDs and worsens the clinical picture. The objective of this article is to provide a review to the practicing clinician on the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, methods of diagnosis, and treatment for four cutaneous STDs--chan…

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)--a synoptic overview for urologists.

The classical bacteria that cause venereal diseases, e.g. gonorrhea, syphilis, chancroid and inguinal granuloma only account for a small proportion of all known STDs today. Other bacteria and viruses as well as yeasts, protozoa and epizoa must also be regarded as causative organisms of STD. Taken together, all sexually transmitted infections (STI) comprise more than 30 relevant STD pathogens. However, not all pathogens that can be sexually transmitted manifest diseases in the genitals and not all infections of the genitals are exclusively sexually transmitted. Concise information and tables su

Sexually transmitted diseases in pregnancy: diagnosis, impact, and intervention.

Sexually transmitted diseases are a major health problem for the 1990s. The etiology of gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomonas, and bacterial vaginitis are presented, along with their treatment, pregnancy-related factors, intrapartum and neonatal factors, and follow-up. The incidence of sexually transmitted diseases has increased, and health care professionals must teach not only about disease impact but also about lifestyle and behavioral changes.

Pediculosis pubis: a surrogate marker for sexually transmitted diseases.

A review of all the patients diagnosed to have Pediculosis pubis (P pubis) during a 2 year period 1989-1991 was carried out. They constituted the index group and were compared with 140 consecutive patients seen during the month of June 1990, who served as controls. Both groups were comparable with respect to age and use of modern contraception. Coexisting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) were found in 37% of the index group. Incidence of STDs was 51% among the controls. In the preceding 3 months, patients in the index group had significantly more sexual partners p < 0.005. These findings e…

Risk profiles and epidemiologic interrelationships of sexually transmitted diseases.

In this study, the risk profiles and epidemiologic interrelationships of 13 sexually transmitted diseases (STD) were studied in 12,170 men and 6,125 women attending the Adelaide STD Clinic in South Australia from 1988 to 1991. Fifteen independent variables for men and 19 independent variables for women were analyzed by multiple logistic regression. Risk profiles were depicted graphically from the odds ratios of independent associations with the factors studied. These profiles showed a marked influence of socioeconomic factors on the epidemiology of hepatitis B infection, syphilis, scabies (in …

Sexually-transmitted diseases, AIDS and traditional healers in Mozambique.

Qualitative research was conducted with traditional healers in Manica Province, Mozambique to develop an empirical, culturally-appropriate strategy for communication between government and traditional healers related to the prevention of STDs including AIDS. Most Manica healers regard AIDS as a new disease for which they lack medicines. However, when questioned on other sexually transmitted diseases, as defined by healers themselves, relatively complex disease taxonomies based on fine distinctions between symptoms emerged. Manica healers recognize two broad categories of STDs: siki and nyoka-r…

Sexually transmitted diseases and their relation to male infertility.

Controversy surrounds the role of sexually transmitted diseases in male infertility. Because our understanding of male infertility is limited, and because diagnostic tests such as semen analysis including culture and leukocyte count are variable, definitive conclusions on STDs and their effect on infertility cannot be substantiated. Prospective investigations of infertile couples using appropriate control groups, sophisticated semen collection protocols, proper microbiologic techniques, and standardization of seminal fluid analysis are required to understand the role of STDs in male infertilit…

Screening for sexually transmitted diseases by primary care physicians.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic has drawn attention to screening for sexually transmitted diseases by primary care physicians. A telephone survey of primary care physicians in an area with a high incidence of STDs (Washington, DC) to ascertain the determinants and the extent of screening and counseling for STDs was completed in 1987. Ninety-nine physicians (33 internists, 38 obstetrician/gynecologists, and 28 family/general practitioners), representing 61% of those eligible, completed the interview. One third (39.4%) were screening for gonorrhea, more than one half (57.5%) for …

Genital warts, other sexually transmitted diseases, and vulvar cancer.

To determine whether specific sexually transmitted diseases were associated with an increased risk of vulvar cancer, we conducted a case-control study among residents of three countries in western Washington. We identified, interviewed, and obtained blood samples from women with in situ (n = 180) and invasive (n = 53) vulvar cancer, 18-79 years of age, who were first diagnosed with these diseases during 1980-1988. We compared their responses with those of 466 women from the general population who were identified by means of random digit dialing. On average, women with vulvar cancer reported a …

[Mucopurulent cervicitis at a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases].

In a series of 1,011 women seen in the Diagnosis Center of Sexually Transmitted Diseases of the Faculty of Medicine of Seville, we study the prevalence of cervical infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and/or Chlamydia trachomatis and also mucopurulent cervicitis (CMP), these last diagnosed by the presence of more than 10 polymorphonuclear leukocytes x 1,000 magnification in Gram stain of secretion or endocervical mucopus. We calculate the predictive value that the diagnosis of the CMP had in detecting cervical infection by chlamydia and gonococcus. N. gonorrhoeae was isolated in 56 patie…

Problems in the treatment of bacterial sexually transmitted diseases.

Although most bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be effectively treated, currently available regimens are far from ideal. Increasingly widespread plasmid-mediated resistance to the penicillins limits the use of these agents in the treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Hemophilus ducreyi infections. Chromosomally mediated antimicrobial resistance to the tetracyclines, penicillins, erythromycins, and sulfonamides further limits therapeutic options in the treatment of gonorrhea, and plasmid-mediated resistance to sulfonamides and tetracyclines is frequent in H. ducreyi infections…
