Circadian disruption by simulated shift work aggravates periodontitis via orchestrating BMAL1 and GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis.

Approximately 20% to 30% of the global workforce is engaged in shift work. As a significant cause of circadian disruption, shift work is closely associated with an increased risk for periodontitis. Nevertheless, how shift work-related circadian disruption functions in periodontitis remains unknown. Herein, we employed a simulated shift work model constructed by controlling the environmental light-dark cycles and revealed that shift work-related circadian disruption exacerbated the progression of experimental periodontitis. RNA sequencing and in vitro experiments indicated that downregulation o

Neural correlates of shift work in nurses: Alterations in cortical gyrification and functional connectivity.

OBJECTIVES: Shift work among nurses is an indispensable part of healthcare. However, it may be accompanied by circadian rhythm disruption. This disruption has been associated with alterations in brain structure and function, and has often been observed to co-occur with sleep disorders and psychological problems. This study aimed to elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the clinical symptoms observed in night-shift nurses, with a focus on cortical morphology and functional connectivity. METHODS: Sixty-two night-shift nurses and fifty-nine day-shift nurses were included in this st

Association between vitamin D deficiency and depressive symptoms among shift workers: Insights from network pharmacology and bioinformatics studies.

Vitamin D deficiency is soaring among shift workers due to multiple issues, including poor UVB experience. The objective of this study was to identify precise mechanisms by which vitamin D deficiency might aggravate depressive symptoms among shift workers. Shift work is also associated with disrupting circadian rhythm, leading to depressive symptoms. Differential expressed genes (DEGs) in depression patients (GSE80655, GSE169459, GSE217811, GSE190518, GSE98793, GSE23848, GSE76826, GSE101521, and GSE54572) and in shift workers (GSE122541) with controls were examined in the GEO database. Cognitive factors increase the risk of shift work disorder through insomnia symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: The primary aims of the current study were to 1) investigate whether cognitive factors are associated with an increased risk of shift work disorder (SWD), and 2) whether symptoms of insomnia and/or excessive sleepiness mediate this association. Additionally, a third exploratory aim of the study was to examine whether these mediators of insomnia and excessive sleepiness vary in the relationship between cognitive factors and two phenotypes of SWD (i.e., SWD with high insomnia and low excessive sleepiness (SWD-I), and SWD with high excessive sleepiness with or without high insomnia (S

Guiding principles for determining work shift duration and addressing the effects of work shift duration on performance, safety, and health: guidance from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society.

Risks associated with fatigue that accumulates during work shifts have historically been managed through working time arrangements that specify fixed maximum durations of work shifts and minimum durations of time off. By themselves, such arrangements are not sufficient to curb risks to performance, safety, and health caused by misalignment between work schedules and the biological regulation of waking alertness and sleep. Science-based approaches for determining shift duration and mitigating associated risks, while addressing operational needs, require: (1) a recognition of the factors contrib

Experience and limited lighting may affect sleepiness of tunnel workers.

BACKGROUND: Working on shifts, especially on a night shift, influences the endogenous sleep regulation system leading to diminished sleep time and increased somnolence. We attempted to evaluate the impact of shifts on sleepiness and correlate the sleepiness score to the experience in a shift schedule. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study consists of 42 male and 2 female workers involved in a tunnel construction. They underwent spirometry, pulse oximetry and were asked to complete the Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaire. RESULTS: Statistical analysis revealed that workers of l

Parental work schedules and adolescent risky behaviors.

Using a large contemporary data set (the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Supplement), the authors examined the effects of parental work schedules on adolescent risky behaviors at age 13 or 14 and the mechanisms that might explain them. Structural equation modeling suggests mothers who worked more often at night spent significantly less time with children and had lower quality home environments, and these mediators were significantly linked to adolescent risky behaviors. Similar effects were not found for evening work schedules, while other types of maternal and paternal nonstandard

Assessment of fitness to perform using a validated self-test in obstetric and gynecological night shifts in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The field of obstetrics and gynecology requires complex decision-making and skills because of unexpected high-risk situations. These skills are influenced by alertness, reaction time, and concentration. Night shifts result in sleep deprivation, which might impair these functions, although it is still unclear to what extent. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether a night shift routinely impairs the obstetrics and gynecology consultants' and residents' fitness to perform and whether this reaches a critical limit compared with relevant frames of reference. STUDY DESIGN:

Parents' precarious work schedules and children's asthma management.

BACKGROUND: Many working parents in the United States are employed in jobs that expose them to challenging working conditions, including low wages, limited benefits, and unstable and unpredictable work schedules. A growing body of literature has documented the harmful impacts of unstable and unpredictable scheduling on workers and their families. We focus on the connection between parental exposure to such unstable and unpredictable scheduling practices and children’s asthma management. Although not all risk factors are fully understood, researchers have linked genetics, environment, and socia

Working-time patterns, job-related well-being, and turnover intentions among paid caregivers: a population-based longitudinal study.

Paid care often involves long working hours and shift work schedules, yet national evidence on caregivers' working-time patterns and their associations with well-being and turnover intentions remains limited. Drawing on the effort-recovery framework, we compared care workers and home carers with other workers. This population-based longitudinal study used six waves of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (2012-2024). Five working-time exposures were modelled separately: usual weekly hours, total overtime, paid overtime, weekend work and nonstandard schedules. Covariate-adjusted generalised esti

Cisplatin-induced threshold shift in the CBA/CaJ, C57BL/6J, BALB/cJ mouse models of hearing loss.

The development of a clinically-relevant rodent model of cisplatin-induced hearing loss presents the challenges of finding the cumulative dose, dosing schedule, and rodent strain to induce a consistent level of threshold shift with low mortality. This study was undertaken to model hearing loss at 16, 32, and 48 mg/kg cumulative doses of cisplatin in the CBA/CaJ, C57BL/6J, and BALB/cJ mouse strains. Mice were exposed to three cycles of 16 mg/kg cisplatin, for a cumulative dose of 48 mg/kg. Equal numbers of male and female mice were used in each strain, and the cisplatin was delivered in three d
