OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of the traumatic mechanism and to develop appropriate treatment for dislocation of the shoulder joint with an ipsilateral humeral shaft fracture.
METHODS: This was an observational and descriptive study. Nine patients with traumatic shoulder dislocations associated with ipsilateral humeral shaft fractures who visited the emergency room and received treatment from January 2012 to June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. CT with three-dimensional reconstruction was performed to provide precise anatomical information of the fractures. The traumatic event…

Dislocation of any joint is an orthopaedic emergency and needs immediate attention by the attending physician. A delay in reducing a dislocated joint can lead to disastrous complications both immediately as well as in the long run. Although anterior dislocation of a shoulder joint is by far the commonest dislocation encountered by any emergency care physician, other joints may also get dislocated. In certain cases two joints may get dislocated simultaneously. Such dislocation is known as a double dislocation. Double dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint and the distal interphalange…

BACKGROUND: Although many case series have been published on the treatment of shoulder periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), few provide direct comparison of outcomes. This systematic review synthesizes the available English literature on shoulder PJI to quantify treatment effectiveness.
METHODS: The PubMed and Embase databases were searched in April 2014. Keywords included "shoulder replacement infection" and "shoulder arthroplasty infection." Of 663 titles, 55 manuscripts underwent full-text review after application of exclusion criteria. Thirty articles were finally included.
RESULTS: Pro

BACKGROUND: Although shoulder problems frequently occur in patients with hemophilia, systematic evaluation of shoulder joint damage in these patients has only rarely been reported.
METHODS: The clinical, radiographic, and ultrasonographic characteristics of the shoulder joint were studied in a cohort of seventy consecutive patients with hemophilia. We collected information on age, disease severity, history of shoulder hemarthrosis, prophylaxis therapy, functional Oxford shoulder score, and crutch use. Both shoulders of each patient were evaluated with shoulder motion and visual analog pain sc…

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign proliferative disease of synovium frequently most frequently seen in the knee joint and … recurrence is high. In this article, we report a 23-years-old male patient with diffuse PVNS in the shoulder joint and biceps tendon which are rarely involved in PVNS.

BACKGROUND: A 46-year-old, nonsmoking, nulliparous woman with a 23-year history of rheumatoid arthritis presented with severely destructed right shoulder, right elbow, and right wrist joints, which resulted in a complete loss of working ability.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, functional staging using the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, the Patient Rated Elbow Evaluation, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand, and the health-related quality-of-life Short Form 36 questionnaire, determination of the c-reactive protein level, erythrocyte sedimentation r

We examined with electrophysiological techniques the effects of experimentally induced inflammation on the mechanosensitive afferent units in the rotator cuff of the shoulder joint of 21 rabbits. We identified 21 mechanosensitive units belonging to group III. 12 units had mechanical thresholds of > 7.0 g and 9 units had thresholds of < 7.0 g. After injection of inflammatory agents, kaolin and carrageenan, into the joint space, ongoing afferent discharge rates increased in all units. The average discharge rate increased significantly from 7 imp/s to 15 imp/s after injection. 5 units had a decre…

We operatively treated, between 1978 and 1987, twenty-one shoulders in nineteen patients, fifty-four to eighty-four years old, who had disabling pain attributable to a massive tear of the rotator cuff, accompanied by loss of the surface of the glenohumeral joint. These patients were not candidates for total shoulder replacement because of the massive deficiency in the cuff and the fixed upward displacement of the humeral head. A prerequisite for hemiarthroplasty was a functionally intact coracoacromial arch to provide superior secondary stability for the prosthesis. One important aspect of the

1. Locking of greater tuberosity against acromion never takes place in any position of abduction. 2. Rolling down movement of humeral head in glenoid inevitably takes place while lifting the arm either in flexed or in abducted position. 3. Forward shift of clavicle with the scapula at the sterno-clavicular joint is an important event during elevation of shoulder joint complex overhead. 4. From theoretical static considerations an attempt has been made to show that properly harnessed biceps and triceps (long heads) may take the place of depressors of the head of the humerus. 5. Recognition of '…

BACKGROUND: The risk of subsequent joint replacement following an index joint replacement for osteoarthritis and the association of this risk with demographic and patient-specific factors are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to determine how demographic and other patient-specific factors are associated with the risk of subsequent joint replacement in the contralateral or a different joint following an index joint replacement for osteoarthritis.
METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) State Inpatient Database (SID) of New York was used to identify the firs

Long-term asymmetric training in golf may lead to skeletal adaptations which can influence swing performance. This study investigated the relationship between joint resting position, dynamic range of motion (ROM) of the hip and shoulder, and clubhead velocity in golfers. Furthermore, it examined the sex-based differences in these parameters. We assessed the hip and shoulder joint resting position via infrared cameras and modified range of motion (vertical distance from the distal end of each fist to the T4 vertebral level) via functional movement screen and a plastic ruler in 24 elite golfers …

OBJECTIVE: To provide a video tutorial on ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis and injection of the canine hip and shoulder joints.
ANIMALS: Dogs undergoing arthrocentesis or intra-articular injection for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
METHODS: The target joint is visualized in long axis with a 70% isopropyl alcohol medium and linear array probe with a frequency range of 2 to 14 MHz and footprint of 50 mm after clipping a window and preparing the region sterilely. The needle is inserted, bevel up, in long axis with the probe angled at the appropriate trajectory to enter the joint space. The…

Upper cross syndrome is one of the most common disorders of the upper part of body, often associated with abnormalities of forward head, forward shoulders, elevated and protracted of scapula, and increased thoracic kyphosis. Conducting research on upper cross syndrome, especially in girls, is of highly significant, considering this issue and lack of examination of complications and consequences of this syndrome; therefore, this study aims to compare the balance and proprioception of the shoulder joint in girls with and without upper cross syndrome.Method The statistical population included two…

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (FS), also known as shoulder adhesive capsulitis, is a musculoskeletal disorder associated with pain and functional disability. There is a lack of evidence on the optimal treatment strategy for FS.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided hydrodilatation of glenohumeral joint combined with acupotomy for treatment of FS.
METHODS: In this prospective randomized, double-blind, controlled study, 63 FS patients were recruited, and equally allocated to treatment group and control group. The treatment group was trea

OBJECTIVE: The shoulder joint is the most flexible joint in the human body. It is a typical multiaxial ball-and-socket joint. The humeral head is approximately spherical, and the glenoid is small and shallow. This article mainly discusses the application value of computerized tomography (CT) in the early diagnosis of skeletal Bankart injury of the shoulder joint.
METHODS: The chemical quality was evaluated according to the physical therapy evidence database PEDro scale. The literature quality evaluation scale and the NO scale are also used to evaluate the quality of each nonrandomized study. …
