Most adenoviruses use the coxsackie-adenovirus receptor (CAR) as a major cellular receptor. We have shown recently that adenovirus types 8, 19a, and 37, which are the major causes of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, use sialic acid rather than CAR as a major cellular receptor. Infection of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) with influenza virus causes depression of PMNL metabolic and bactericidal activities. The studies reported here were undertaken to determine whether the hemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein of influenza virus mediates this depression. Chrysotile and crocidolite are commonly used forms of asbestos. Hemolysis has been widely used as a test of membrane injury, and it has been shown previously that chrysotile causes rapid breakdown of red blood cells (RBCs), whereas crocidolite is only weakly hemolytic. Serum beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2m), sialic acid and C-reactive protein (CRP) were studied in 58 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) on 186 occasions. AIM: The objective of this investigation is to explore the potential correlation between salivary free Sias and ASD.
METHODS: This case-control study enrolled 141 children with ASD and 123 age-matched healthy controls. Utilising an enzymatic assay, we determined the free Sias in saliva. Using the CARS, the behavioural symptoms of children with ASD were evaluated and ranked from mild to severe.
