This review focuses on arborviral infections associated with California serocomplex (Bunyaviridae, Orthobunyavirus). Results of relevant eco-epidemiological and clinical studies in Russia are presented suggesting the ubiquitious nature of diseases caused by viruses of the California encephalitis serocomplex (Inko, Tahyna, Snowshoe Hare). The etiologic structure of these diseases in taiga and mixed woods of the European part and Western Siberia is dominated by the Inco virus and in southern regions by Tahina. Liver fluke infection caused by Opisthorchiidae is a major public health problem in many parts of the Far East, Southeast Asia, and eastern Europe. We report on 2 patients from Siberia suffering from an infection with the parasite Opisthorchis felineus. The unusual course of their disease pretended in case 1 an eosinophilic leukemia and in case 2 a malignoma of the gallbladder. The Opisthorchiasis is endemic in large areas of Asia and Russia. Humans acquire the infection by eating raw fresh-water fish. Symptoms are nonspecific, but detection of eosinophilia in travellers or residents of endemic areas should induce analysis for specific antibodies against Opisthorchis species. To determine the HLA-B27 gene subtypes associated with joint diseases we examined 55 patients (35 with ankylosing spondylarthritis (AS), 13 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 5 with Reiter's syndrome, 2 with psoriatic arthritis). DNA amplification combined with sequence specific oligonucleotide hybridization were used to identify six HLA-B27 gene alleles. The authors assess opisthorchiasis situation at settlements near compressor stations along 2000 km gas line crossing Western Siberia from North to South. The mean opisthorchiasis incidence was found to be 17.4 +/- 0.7% (from 1.6% in the Extreme North to 38% in hyperendemic regions). Goroji Nakagawa, a head guard of Itrup Island, was unwillingly brought to Siberia on a Russian vessel in 1807 and he returned to Japan with two Russian vaccination books after five years' stay in Siberia in 1812. This article looks into the autobiography of the Croatian chemist and pharmacognosist Antun Vrgoč (1881-1949) entitled My Memories of the World War 1914-1920 and published in Zagreb in 1937. The author was captured in October 1914 and deported to Siberia, where he remained prisoner of war until 1920. The complete nucleotide sequences of three human echovirus (EV) 11 strains and one EV19 strain, all of which caused outbreaks of enterovirus uveitis (EU), a new infant disease first identified in 1980 in Siberia, were determined.
