This short communication describes a case of diprosopiasis in Trachemys scripta scripta imported from Florida and farmed for about 4 months by a private owner in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The water turtle showed the morphological and radiological features characterizing such deformity. This communication aims to advance the knowledge of the reptile's congenital anomalies and suggests the need for more detailed investigations to better understand its pathogenesis.

A case of extra-gastrointestinal infection by Anisakis in a woman living in Catania (Sicily, Southern Italy) is described. The patient complained of severe pain in the ileocecal region, and a diagnosis of acute appendicitis led to an appendectomy. During the intervention, a laparoscopic exploration showed a nodule on the large omentum that was surgically removed. Parasitological diagnosis was achieved on the basis of morphological observations carried out on the histological sections of the nodule.

Vibration exposure of the hand-arm system is associated with an increased risk of upper-limb vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal lesions, or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei (Pinaceae) is a species living in a very small population only in a confined area of Sicily. In this study, the dichloromethane extract of the leaves was analyzed. Apart from three already known metabolites namely dehydroabietic acid; maltol; and rheosmin, previously detected in other species of Abies, a lanostane derivative was isolated. Its chemical structure was elucidated by means of extensive spectroscopic methods.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Sicily (48 new cases in 2004, of which nine were in Agrigento). In southern Europe between 25-70 per cent of adult VL cases are related to HIV infection. Clinical and statistical research, conducted in collaboration with other workers in some instances, into the behaviour of dental decay and the morbidity and mortality indices in populations with dental fluorosis due to the ingestion of naturally fluorinated water in Calabria and Sicily showed that the fears expressed with respect to the toxic effect of fluorine on the organism can be considered excessive. Starting from January 1997 we prospectively evaluated all cases of acute hepatitis B admitted to two of the main Infectious Diseases Units in Catania (eastern Sicily). The survey was extended throughout a 10-year period up to December 2007. Between 1997 and 1999 we observed 21 cases of acute hepatitis B; between 2000 and 2002 18 cases; between 2003 and 2005 22 cases and, finally, 37 cases were reported in the period 2006-2007. A phytochemical analysis of the dichloromethane extract from the flowers of a subspecies of Tanacetum vulgare growing in Sicily was carried out. Five known sesquiterpene lactones with the eudesmane skeleton have been isolated and the cytotoxic activity of these compounds was tested in vitro on A549 (human lung carcinoma epithelial-like) and V79379A (Chinese hamster lung fibroblast-like) cells using the tetrazolium salt reduction (MTT) assay. All of tested compounds induced high time- and concentration-dependent cytotoxic effects.

The male of the gonad-infecting nematode Philometra filiformis (Stossich, 1896) (Philometridae) is for the first time described, based on specimens from the ovary of the marine fish Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus) from the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily, Italy.
