The increased risk of developing adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon after ureterosigmoidostomy has been acknowledged for some time. Development of adenocarcinoma in colonic conduits isolated from the fecal stream is rare. We report a case of adenocarcinoma arising in a sigmoid conduit that probably represents a metachronous adenocarcinoma of the colon.

Pseudo-neoplastic sigmoid diverticulitis, a rare clinical form of pseudo-tumoural sigmoiditis, is characterised by the difficulty of its clinical, radiological, endoscopic and even per-operative diagnosis. None of these various phases in study may suffice to eliminate the possibility of an associated carcinoma. The diagnosis may be made by opening the operative specimen, but this is too late in time. The appearance of the bladder, rather than misleading the diagnosis, may provide arguments in favour of the benign nature of these pseudo-tumours.

A 49-year-old man underwent sigmoidectomy for the diagnosis of type 2 sigmoid cancer. Pathological findings showed a tumor 3.5×4.0cm in size, type 2, pSS, ly2, v1, pN0, cH0, cP0, cM0, pStageⅡ, R0. Asynchronistic metastases to the liver and lungs were subsequently found. Left hepatectomy was performed for 1 liver metastasis, and 4lung metastases were resected through 3 surgeries. A subcutaneous tumor in an abdominal wall scar was also resected in the 4th surgery for metastasis resection. All pathological diagnoses were metastases from sigmoid cancer, and complete curative resection was possible

A 31-year-old woman who had undergone bilateral ureterosigmoidostomy at age five had a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma at the anastomotic site that was not detected by preoperative studies or intraoperative palpation. The authors review other reports of anastomotic carcinomas occurring after ureterosigmoidostomy for benign disease and recommend a diagnostic protocol. Whenever the urine is diverted away from the sigmoidostomy (rediversion), the anastomotic site should be resected. Ureterosigmoidostomy should be undertaken only with the understanding that meticulous long-term follow-up

The aims of this study were to calculate the true incidence of colonic carcinoids in Connecticut from 1976 to 1986 and to determine the outcome of patients with these lesions. Fifty-four patients with carcinoids of the colon were identified (23 male and 31 female patients). Their average age was 64.1 +/- 2.1 years, with a range of 12 to 83 years. The age-adjusted incidence was 0.31 cases/100,000 population/year. Forty-eight percent of the carcinoids were located in the cecum; 16%, ascending colon; 6%, transverse colon; 11%, descending colon; 13%, sigmoid colon; and 6%, not assigned. Follow-up

We report synchronous resection of gallbladder hyperplasia polyps with pancreaticobiliary maljunction without dilation of the bile duct and sigmoid colon carcinoma. The patient was a 60-year-old woman diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer. Gallbladder polyps were detected incidentally during a preoperative examination for sigmoid colon cancer that was discovered because of anemia. Detailed examination revealed a suspected gallbladder carcinoma along with pancreaticobiliary maljunction without dilation of the bile duct. The patient underwent synchronous open colectomy and cholecystectomy. Histopa

A 78-year-old man had undergone a laparoscopic sigmoid colon resection; left ureteral resection; and a ureteral reconstruction for sigmoid colon cancer with left ureteral invasion. The patient did not wish to undergo postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy, and he was followed up at fixed intervals. Six months after surgery, CT revealed peritoneal metastasis and liver metastasis(S6). Considering his advanced age and adverse events, the patient was started on capecitabine plus bevacizumab therapy. The patient was able to continue the treatment, even though he had to suspend and reduce the dose due

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are neoplasms that arise from cells of the endocrine and nervous system. NETs, often found in the gastrointestinal tract, can be found anywhere in the body, and have metastatic potential. NETs occasionally present with metastatic disease without an identifiable primary tumor.
CASE: A 79-year-old female patient presented with an abdominal wall mass. Percutaneous biopsy was consistent with a NET. Preoperative endoscopy and PillCam were unremarkable. PET Dotatate demonstrated uptake in the abdominal wall as well as vague uptake in the pelvis. Intraoperati

A wide range of spindle cell proliferations are found uncommonly in the sigmoid colon, rectum and anus. They usually present as polyps, and include reactive lesions and benign and malignant neoplasms which may be primary or metastatic. They are less frequently described in the literature compared to those in the upper gastrointestinal tract, and may be underdiagnosed. The widespread use of sigmoidoscopy in symptomatic patients and bowel cancer screening programmes means that histopathologists must be aware of, and adopt a logical approach to, diagnosing spindle cell proliferations in biopsy an

Triple synchronous primary malignant neoplasms are rare. The exact aetiology is unknown; however, risk factors include older age, family history, genetic aberrations, prolonged exposure to carcinogens and smoking. We describe a previously healthy 48-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and a palpable abdominal mass. Imaging revealed a complex cystic, solid pelvic mass and another mass in the right upper quadrant. She received an extensive abdominal surgery including exploratory laparotomy, pelvic mass resection, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, bilater

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is characterized by extensive mucinous ascites following rupture of mucinous neoplasms of an intra-abdominal origin, and contain secreted gel-forming mucins such as MUC2 and MUC5AC. We encountered a 66-year-old Japanese man complaining of abdominal distension. Ascites at the site was gelatinous upon gross examination, and needle aspirate smears showed histiocytes and many mucinous balls wrapped in spindle cells, which were positive for vimentin, pan-cytokeratin, and podoplanin. The cell block showed several adenocarcinoma clusters, which were positive for MUC2, MUC

The authors share their experiences with treatment of 38 patients with external intestinal fistulas after operations on internal genitals. The patients were divided into three groups: patients with pyo-inflammatory diseases, patients with benign tumors and patients with malignant neoplasms. It is noted that preoperative diagnosis of involvement of the intestine in the process is rather difficult, instrumental methods of examination in patients with pyo-inflammatory diseases are poorly informative. In patients with malignant diseases of the uterus and uterine appendages the sigmoid colon should

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumour (PEComa) is an extremely rare neoplasm with distinctive morphology and specific expression of immunohistochemical markers. The lesion is typically diagnosed in middle-aged women, with few reports of paediatric cases, and there is no standardized treatment for the tumour type. Here, the case of a 17-year-old female, who presented with painless haematochezia for 2 days and was diagnosed with gastrointestinal PEComa of the sigmoid colon with regional lymph node metastasis after serial examination, is presented. She was treated by surgical resection of the tumo

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a multicentric human immunodeficiency virus-associated neoplasm characterized by multiple vascular nodules in the skin, mucous membranes, and viscera. Gastrointestinal acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related KS is the most common visceral involvement reported in disseminated disease. Here, we present the findings of a rare case of KS involving multiple organs with abdominal pain and active bleeding in the colon. Multiple intraluminal lesions were found in the terminal ileum, sigmoid colon, and rectum by ileocolonoscopy, and in the jejunum and ileum by fluoros

Intussusception is the telescoping of proximal bowel wall into the lumen of a distal segment. Whilst it is common in children, intussusception in adults is rare, and predominantly occurs secondary to an underlying malignant neoplasm. Abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) is preferred for detection of lead points and lesion localisation. We present the case of a 79-year-old female with a four-day history of colicky abdominal pain followed by obstipation and distension. CT demonstrated a rounded heterogeneous density protruding into the upper rectal lumen, and also left-sided colonic obs

Isolated metastasis of primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) is extremely rare. We describe a case of a 41-year-old asymptomatic woman who was referred three years after the initial treatment for PFTC due to elevated sertum CA-125 levels. The abdominal and pelvic CT scans revealed a pelvic mass near the top of the vaginal vault. On surgery, a sigmoid colon tumour was found and a sigmoidectomy was performed. On histopathology the tumour involved the bowel wall from serosa to submucosa, without involvement of the underlying mucosa. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for cytokeratin 7 an
