Emotion-Aware Virtual Reality Through Multimodal ECG and Postural Fusion.

Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments are increasingly adopted in clinical psychology and stress-management contexts; however, their therapeutic effectiveness depends on the system's ability to understand and dynamically respond to users' affective states. Emotional regulation plays a key role in psychological resilience, directly influencing stress coping mechanisms, cognitive performance, and overall mental well-being. Despite recent advances, automatic recognition of scenario-associated affective conditions in VR remains challenging because head-mounted displays occlude facial feature

Metrical rhythm implicitly orients attention in time as indexed by improved target detection and left inferior parietal activation.

When we direct attentional resources to a certain point in time, expectation and preparedness is heightened and behavior is, as a result, more efficient. This future-oriented attending can be guided either voluntarily, by externally defined cues, or implicitly, by perceived temporal regularities. Inspired by dynamic attending theory, our aim was to study the extent to which metrical structure, with its beats of greater or lesser relative strength, modulates attention implicitly over time and to uncover the neural circuits underlying this process of dynamic attending. We used fMRI to investigat

Predictive socioeconomic and clinical profiles of antidepressant response and remission.

BACKGROUND: There are many prognostic factors for treatment outcome in major depressive disorder (MDD). The predictive power of any single factor, however, is limited. We aimed to develop profiles of antidepressant response and remission based upon hierarchical combinations of baseline clinical and demographic factors. METHODS: Using data from Level 1 of the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression trial (STAR*D), in which 2,876 participants with MDD were treated with citalopram, a signal-detection analysis was performed to identify hierarchical predictive profiles for patients

Amygdala excitability to subliminally presented emotional faces distinguishes unipolar and bipolar depression: an fMRI and pattern classification study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder and Major depressive disorder are difficult to differentiate during depressive episodes, motivating research for differentiating neurobiological markers. Dysfunctional amygdala responsiveness during emotion processing has been implicated in both disorders, but the important rapid and automatic stages of emotion processing in the amygdala have so far never been investigated in bipolar patients. METHODS: fMRI data of 22 bipolar depressed patients (BD), 22 matched unipolar depressed patients (MDD), and 22 healthy controls (HC) were obtained during processing of subli

Gaps-in-noise (GIN©) test results in children with and without reading disabilities and phonological processing deficits.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the gaps-in-noise (GIN(©)) test could differentiate children with dyslexia and significant phonological awareness deficits from a group of children with normal reading skills. DESIGN: A prospective study of GIN test performance in two groups of children. Participants were administered routine audiological tests, a phonological processing test, and an auditory temporal resolution test (GIN test). Statistical testing was completed to determine if significant differences existed between groups on GIN test results and phonological processing measures, and to examine pot

Behaviors of cubic distortion product otoacoustic emissions evoked by amplitude modulated tones.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured using sinusoidal amplitude modulation (AM) tones. When one of the primary stimuli (f(1) or f(2), f(1) < f(2)) was amplitude modulated, a series of changes in the cubic difference tone (CDT) were observed. In the frequency domain, multiple sidebands were present around the CDT and their sizes grew with the modulation depth of the AM stimulus. In the time domain, the CDT showed different modulation patterns between two major signal conditions: the AM tone was used as the f(1) or the f(2). The CDT amplitude followed the AM tone when

Closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback and brain-computer interface interventions for mental health: a review.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been widely explored for detecting and monitoring mental health-related states, with many existing studies focusing on identification and classification. Such approaches are primarily observational and provide limited support for intervention. Closed-loop EEG-based BCIs address this limitation by incorporating real-time feedback to observe neural activity. A key paradigm within this context is neurofeedback, in which users learn to modulate their own brain activity, with the aim of supporting improvements in mental states a

On the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease from multimodal signals: A survey.

INTRODUCTION: The number of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients is increasing with increased life expectancy and 115.4 million people are expected to be affected in 2050. Unfortunately, AD is commonly diagnosed too late, when irreversible damages have been caused in the patient. OBJECTIVE: An automatic, continuous and unobtrusive early AD detection method would be required to improve patients' life quality and avoid big healthcare costs. Thus, the objective of this survey is to review the multimodal signals that could be used in the development of such a system, emphasizing on the accuracy that

The modulatory effect of CA1 GABAb receptors on ketamine-induced spatial and non-spatial novelty detection deficits with respect to Ca(2+).

Glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are among the most abundant neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. Ketamine and other noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists are known to induce deficits in learning and the performance of cognitive tasks. The present study was designed to assess the effects of dorsal hippocampal (CA1) GABAb receptors on ketamine-induced spatial and non-spatial memory deficits with regard to the role of Ca(2+) as a defining factor. Spatial and non-spatial novelty detection of male NMRI mice were investigated in a circular open-field ap

A Predominantly Visual Subdivision of The Right Temporo-Parietal Junction (vTPJ).

A multiplicity of sensory and cognitive functions has been attributed to the large cortical region at the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). Using functional MRI, we report that a small region lateralized within the right TPJ responds robustly to certain simple visual stimuli ("vTPJ"). The vTPJ was found in all right hemispheres (n = 7), posterior to the auditory cortex. To manipulate stimuli and attention, subjects were presented with a mixture of visual and auditory stimuli in a concurrent block design in 2 experiments: (1) A simple visual stimulus (a grating pattern modulating in mean luminan

Aging of the medial olivocochlear reflex and associations with speech perception.

The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) modulates cochlear amplifier gain and is thought to facilitate the detection of signals in noise. High-resolution distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were recorded in teens, young, middle-aged, and elderly adults at moderate levels using primary tones swept from 0.5 to 4 kHz with and without a contralateral acoustic stimulus (CAS) to elicit medial efferent activation. Aging effects on magnitude and phase of the 2f1-f2 DPOAE and on its components were examined, as was the link between speech-in-noise performance and MOCR strength. Results rev

Drugs That Interact With Colchicine Via Inhibition of Cytochrome P450 3A4 and P-Glycoprotein: A Signal Detection Analysis Using a Database of Spontaneously Reported Adverse Events (FAERS).

BACKGROUND: Colchicine has a narrow therapeutic index. Its toxicity can be increased due to concomitant exposure to drugs inhibiting its metabolic pathway; these are cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp). OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical outcomes associated with colchicine drug interactions using the spontaneous reports of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). METHODS: We conducted a disproportionality analysis using FAERS data from January 2004 through June 2020. The reporting odds ratio (ROR) and observed-to-expected ratio (O/E) wi

Accelerometer-based automatic voice onset detection in speech mapping with navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The use of navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in mapping of speech-related brain areas has recently shown to be useful in preoperative workflow of epilepsy and tumor patients. However, substantial inter- and intraobserver variability and non-optimal replicability of the rTMS results have been reported, and a need for additional development of the methodology is recognized. In TMS motor cortex mappings the evoked responses can be quantitatively monitored by electromyographic recordings; however, no such easily available setup exists for speech mappings. N

Mechanisms of sharp wave initiation and ripple generation.

Replay of neuronal activity during hippocampal sharp wave-ripples (SWRs) is essential in memory formation. To understand the mechanisms underlying the initiation of irregularly occurring SWRs and the generation of periodic ripples, we selectively manipulated different components of the CA3 network in mouse hippocampal slices. We recorded EPSCs and IPSCs to examine the buildup of neuronal activity preceding SWRs and analyzed the distribution of time intervals between subsequent SWR events. Our results suggest that SWRs are initiated through a combined refractory and stochastic mechanism. SWRs i

Recovery from on- and off-frequency forward masking in listeners with normal and impaired hearing.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible mechanisms underlying an effect reported earlier [Wojtczak, M., and Oxenham, A. J. (2009). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 125, 270-281] in normal-hearing listeners, whereby recovery from forward masking can be slower for off-frequency tonal maskers than for on-frequency tonal maskers that produce the same amount of masking at a 0-ms masker-signal delay. To rule out potential effects of confusion between the tonal signal and tonal masker, one condition used a noise-band forward masker. To test whether the effect involved temporal build-up, another cond

Behavioural and electrophysiological assessment of temporal resolution in normally-hearing listeners with tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus and its pathophysiological mechanisms need more investigation because tinnitus may change the typical processing of sounds in the auditory system. Poor temporal resolution, which is not assessed with conventional subjective tinnitus evaluations, has been reported in some tinnitus sufferers. DESIGN: This study used a gap-in-noise paradigm to assess temporal resolution in tinnitus sufferers using both behavioural and electrophysiologic methods. STUDY SAMPLE: 19 participants with unilateral tinnitus and a control group without tinnitus participated in this study. Both wide-b

Multiwavelength fluorescence otoscope for video-rate chemical imaging of middle ear pathology.

A common motif in otolaryngology is the lack of certainty regarding diagnosis for middle ear conditions, resulting in many patients being overtreated under the worst-case assumption. Although pneumatic otoscopy and adjunctive tests offer additional information, white light otoscopy has been the main tool for diagnosis of external auditory canal and middle ear pathologies for over a century. In middle ear pathologies, the inability to avail high-resolution structural and/or molecular imaging is particularly glaring, leading to a complicated and erratic decision analysis. Here, we propose a nove

Auditory deficits of Kcna1 deletion are similar to those of a monaural hearing impairment.

Kv1.1 subunits of low voltage-activated (Kv) potassium channels are encoded by the Kcna1 gene and crucially determine the synaptic integration window to control the number and temporal precision of action potentials in the auditory brainstem of mammals and birds. Prior electrophysiological studies showed that auditory signaling is compromised in monaural as well as in binaural neurons of the auditory brainstem in Kv1.1 knockout mice (Kcna1(-/-)). Here we examine the behavioral effects of Kcna1 deletion on sensory tasks dependent on either binaural processing (detecting the movement of a sound
