Some attempts to improve the nutritive value of urea for dairy cows. 3. Its adjunction to fermentable carbohydrates: starea.

Starea, an intimate mixture of gelatinized wheat starch and urea, was tested again urea with regard to the ammonia release in the rumen, the amount and composition of the nitrogen fraction reaching the intestine, the nitrogen and energy balances, and the performance of lactating cows. Maize silage was the basal feed in all experiments. The ammonia concentration in the rumen liquor was measured in two cows fitted with a permanent rumen cannula. The curve of the ammonia concentration was about the same with both nitrogen supplements, and peaked at about 250 mg/l (14.7 mmol/l) two hours postfeedi…

Sustainable Use of Agro-Industrial By-Products as Feed in Finishing Pigs.

In modern animal production systems, the use of alternative feed sources is essential for reducing production costs, protecting natural resources, and improving meat quality. This study evaluated the impact of a unique silage-one produced by agro-industrial by-products-on the growth, meat quality, and health parameters of finishing pigs. Eighteen pigs (120 days old, 59.47 ± 0.85 kg) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments containing 0% (A), 5% (B), or 10% (C) silage. After 60 days, blood samples were collected for hematological and biochemical analyses; this was followed by slaughte…

Effects of particle size of alfalfa-based dairy cow diets on chewing activity, ruminal fermentation, and milk production.

Effects offorage particle size measured as physically effective NDF and ratio of alfalfa silage to alfalfa hay of diets on feed intake, chewing activity, particle size reduction, salivary secretion, ruminal fermentation, and milk production of dairy cows were evaluated using a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The diets consisted of 60% barley-based concentrate and 40% forage, comprised either of 50:50 or 25:75 of alfalfa silage:alfalfa hay, and alfalfa hay was either chopped or ground. Various methods were used to determine physically effective NDF co…

[Human listeriosis diagnosed in Iceland 1978-1994.].

Listeriosis has been recognised in Iceland, as a distinct disease entity in sheep called silage disease (votheysveiki), since 1910. The use of silage was introduced in Iceland in the latter part of the 19th century. Because of the climatic conditions it came into widespread use and the connection between silage and listeriosis was first demonstrated in Iceland by Pálsson et al. The first case of human listeriosis was diagnosed in 1961. The diease was not diagnosed again untill 1978 when four cases were identified. In the period between 1978 and 1994 L. monocytogenes was isolated from 36 patien…

Effects of alfalfa particle size and specific gravity on chewing activity, digestibility, and performance of Holstein dairy cows.

Two experiments were carried out to test the effects of alfalfa particle size and functional specific gravity (FSG) on chewing activity, digestibility, rumen kinetics, and production of lactating dairy cows fed corn silage based rations. In experiment 1, water-holding capacity (WHC), insoluble dry matter, hydration rate, and FSG changes were determined in alfalfa hay (varying in particle size) and corn silage. Reduction of particle size increased bulk density, FSG, and the rate of hydration, and decreased WHC of alfalfa. In experiment 2, 9 midlactation Holstein dairy cows fed total mixed ratio…

Nitrogen dioxide (silo gas) poisoning in dairy cattle.

Toxic silo gases are a potential danger to livestock housed in close proximity to roughage silos. These gases, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), may be produced during the early stages of (maize and grass) silage making. In humans, inhalation of these gases causes a condition known as 'Silo Filler's Disease' (SFD), which is a recognized occupational hazard for workers in upright forage silos in many countries. NO2 accumulates on top of silage, is inhaled by workers, and reacts with water on the airway surfaces to form nitrous acid, which damages the lung and causes pulmonary oedema, bronchioliti…

Changes in the feed intake, pH and osmolality of rumen fluid, and the position of the abomasum of eight dairy cows during a diet-induced left displacement of the abomasum.

During the last six weeks of the dry period, eight Holstein-Friesian cows were fed a restricted amount of grass silage; after calving, a mixture of maize silage and concentrates was offered in a feeding regimen designed to induce a displacement of the abomasum. In the first month after calving, the cows were monitored for the following variables: feed intake and composition, milk production, the position of the abomasum, and the pH and osmolality of the rumen contents. In five of the eight cows, a left displacement of the abomasum occurred between four and 21 days after calving in the absence …

Arterial blood ionised calcium activity in periparturient Holstein cows fed an alkaline low-energy density or acidifying high-energy density close-up prepartum rations.

Periparturient dairy cows often experience metabolic and health challenges due to impaired Ca homeostasis. Therefore, improving Ca metabolism and monitoring functional Ca status are essential during this critical transition phase. The objective was to test the effects of different feeding strategies in the close-up dry period on arterial blood ionised Ca concentration (iCa) of periparturient Holstein cows. A total of 28 Holstein dry cows were fed a common far-off dry cow ration (FAR; grass silage and barley straw-based, dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) of +300 mEq/kg DM) and randomly all…

Synergistic effects of ferulic acid esterase-producing lactic acid bacteria, cellulase and xylanase on the fermentation characteristics, fibre and nitrogen components and microbial community structure of Broussonetia papyrifera during ensiling.

BACKGROUND: The high fibre content of whole plants of Broussonetia papyrifera limits its efficient utilization. Ferulic acid esterase (FAE), in combination with xylanase, can effectively cleave the lignin-carbohydrate complex, promoting the function of cellulase. However, little is known about the impact of these additives on silage. To effectively utilize natural woody plant resources, FAE-producing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RO395, xylanase (XY) and cellulase (CE) were used to investigate the dynamic fermentation characteristics, fibre and nitrogen components and microbial community struc…

Farmer's lung is now in decline.

Farmer's lung incidence in Ireland was constant until 1996, even though hay making methods were revolutionised in late 1980's. We undertook this study to find out the incidence of farmer's lung in Ireland from 1982-2002 and its correlation with rainfall and the effect of changing farm practices. The primary cases of farmer's lung were identified from Hospital in Patients Enquiry (HIPE) unit of the national Economic & Social Research Institute (ESRI) Dublin. Rainfall data were obtained from Met Eireann whereas population, hay production and silage production were obtained from the Central Stati…

Brown midrib corn shredlage in diets for high-producing dairy cows.

A novel method of harvesting whole-plant corn silage, shredlage, may increase kernel processing and physically effective fiber. Improved fiber effectiveness may be especially advantageous when feeding brown midrib (BMR) corn hybrids, which have reduced lignin content. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding TMR containing BMR corn shredlage (SHRD) compared with BMR conventionally processed corn silage (KP) or KP plus chopped alfalfa hay (KPH) on intake, lactation performance, and total-tract nutrient digestibility in dairy cows. The KP was harvested using conventiona…

The substitution of soybean meal for urea: the effect on the ammonia content of the rumen fluid, the N flow in the duodenum, the nitrogen and energy balances and the milk production.

In different experiments, the nutritive value of maize silage associated with urea was compared with that of the same forage associated with soybean meal. The ammonia concentration in the rumen fluid was measured with two dry cows fitted with a permanent rumen cannula. Urea gave rise to much higher NH3 concentrations compared with soybean meal. The duodenal N flow was measured with two dry cows fitted with a re-entrant cannula at 10 cm from the pylorus. Adding increasing amounts of either of the two N supplements to the maize silage showed that they were equivalent with low N intakes. However,…
