Uses of RTV silicone in orbital reconstruction.

In a five-year follow-up of 42 patients with unsatisfactory cosmetic results after enulceation, room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone was used in the surgical correction of enophthalmos and superior sulcus depression. RTV silicone with a catalyst was placed in a dissected pocket subperiosteally along the floor and lateral wall of the orbit to correct the volume deficit. When vulcanizing in situ into soft silicone rubber, the implant conformed to the orbital wall and did not migrate. We determined tissue tolerance to in situ vulcanizing silicone histologically in 30 rats by inserting prev…

Silicone implants for contour deformities of the trunk.

A follow-up study of 12 patients who had preformed silicone implants inserted for correction of body contour deformities (8 for pectus excavatum and 4 for soft-tissue deformities of the shoulder and pectoral region) has demonstrated the safety of this technique and its lack of significant early or late complications. No implants have been removed, and 10 of the 12 patients regarded the overall results as good or excellent.

Solvent compatibility for extractables analysis of silicones.

A unique combination of properties, such as heat resistance, transparency, and high deformability, has led to wide adoption of silicone rubber as a material of construction in medical devices. Potential toxicity of medical devices and their components are assessed by exhaustively extracting, identifying, and semi-quantifying extractable compounds in accordance with ISO 10993-18:2020. However, solvent compatibility with silicones can present analytical challenges, as non-polar solvents may cause swelling in excess of 200% of the original volume and mass and elicit degradation. This investigatio…

Bloating after Silicone Breast Implants.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Empirical data suggest that women submitted to silicone breast implant surgery report bloating after intervention. We aimed to look to this phenomenon in a retrospective study. METHODS: An online ad-hoc survey was created. It included 22 items aiming to collect essential biographical data and occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms after esthetic surgery. Subjects invited to fill the questionnaire were people from a data base of a busy esthetic clinic. Respondents were included in two groups: one group with breast implant surgery and a control group with other intervention…

Silicone allergy mimicking shunt infection.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to highlight silicone allergy as a rare cause of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt complication, often mimicking infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information regarding the patient presented was obtained by review of their medical notes, both paper and electronically. A literature review was performed by searching Pubmed using the following terms; silicone allergy and shunt allergy, to identify similar publications. RESULTS: Nine publications between 1994 and 2019 formed the basis of the literature review. The primary aim was to identify clinical present…

Retrolaminar Migration of Intraocular Silicone Oil.

BACKGROUND: Migration of intravitreal silicone to the retrolaminar optic nerve was detected pathologically in 1983, symptomatic migration to the subarachnoid space of the optic nerve was reported in 1994, and asymptomatic intraventricular silicone was first seen radiographically in 1999. Since then, little advance has been made in understanding this phenomenon despite numerous case reports. Although some authors have restricted their attention to cases of intraventricular silicone, we believe that these represent part of a clinical spectrum and that all cases with retrolaminar silicone should …

The male experience of ISC with a silicone catheter.

Since its introduction in the 1970s, intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) has become more common and should be considered the method of choice for draining retained urine. The realisation for male patients that they require catheterisation can be associated with a significant physical and psychological burden (Shaw and Logan, 2013). This article describes a UK multi-centre patient satisfaction survey evaluating the features of a male ISC silicone catheter. The survey was aimed at determining patient preferences and perceptions of learning ISC with the intermittent catheter to evaluate if a …
