Isolated and grouped relationships between type 2 diabetes and peripheral arterial disease on skin temperature in the foot plantar region.

The aim of the study was to verify relationships between isolated and grouped clinical conditions (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus [T2DM] and Peripheral Arterial Disease [PAD]) with the skin temperature of the plantar region of the feet (Tskin_Feet). Twenty-four elderly women participated, divided into three groups: GT2DM + PAD (n = 8; 69.6 ± 8.0 years-old; 148 ± 5 cm; 63.8 ± 8.9 kg), GT2DM (n = 8, 69.3 ± 7.8 years-old, 151 ± 6 cm; 66.3 ± 10.8 kg), and control group (CG) (n = 8; 69.3 ± 6.6 years old; 148 ± 6 cm; 58.0 ± 5.3 kg). The T2DM was diagnosed based on HbA1C concentrations, and PAD was assesse…

Thermography for skin temperature evaluation during dynamic exercise: a case study on an incremental maximal test in elite male cyclists.

The use of thermal imaging in monitoring the dynamic of skin temperature during prolonged physical exercise is central to assess athletes' ability to dissipate heat from the skin surface to the environment. In this study, seven elite cyclists completed an incremental maximal cycling test to evaluate their skin temperature response under controlled-environment conditions. Thermal images have been analyzed using a method based on maxima detection (Tmax). Data confirmed a reduction in skin temperature due to vasoconstriction during the exercise, followed by a temperature increment after exhaustio…

Phase relationship between skin temperature and sleep-wake rhythms in women with vascular dysregulation and controls under real-life conditions.

The aim of the study was to investigate whether women with primary vascular dysregulation (VD; main symptoms of thermal discomfort with cold extremities) and difficulties initiating sleep (DIS) exhibit a disturbed phase of entrainment (Ψ) under everyday life conditions. The authors predicted a phase delay of the distal-proximal skin temperature gradient and salivary melatonin rhythms with respect to the sleep-wake cycle in women with VD and DIS (WVD) compared to controls (CON), similar to that found in their previous constant-routine laboratory data. A total of 41 young healthy women, 20 with …

[Shower PUVA: a new possibility for topical PUVA therapy. Phototoxicity in relation to shower time, water temperature and skin type].

During the past few years, bath PUVA has become established as an effective treatment for various dermatoses and especially for psoriasis. Using 3,4,5 trimethylpsoralen (TMP) in combination with subsequent UVA irradiation, a shower PUVA has been developed as an alternative in local PUVA therapy. This involves moistening the patient's skin - with the exception of the head and neck area - in a shower using water containing psoralen (TMP concentration 0,27 mg/l). The advantages of shower PUVA method are that time, space and cost savings are possible and that only a slight amount of physical exert

Monitoring heat strain: the effect of sensor type and location on single-site and mean skin temperature during work in the heat.

PURPOSE: Elevations in skin temperature and heat strain reduce tolerance to work in the heat. This study assessed agreement between mean (eight sites) and single-site skin temperature, measured by a conductive or infrared sensor, during exercise in the heat. METHODS: Twelve males (age: 24.2 ± 3.7 years; height: 180 ± 6.5 cm; body mass: 82.9 ± 9.5 kg; body fat: 16.0 ± 6.5%) volunteered to participate in two trials. Thirty minutes of seated rest was followed by 60 min of treadmill walking (4.5 km·h-1, 1%) inside an environmental chamber (35.5 ± 0.2 °C dry bulb, 50.7 ± 2.5% relative humidity) we…

Effects of intrathecal substance P and a substance P antagonist on a reflex to noxious heat are independent of changes in tail skin temperature.

Substance P or the substance P receptor antagonist (D-Arg1,D-Trp7.9,Leu11)-substance P (Spantide) was injected into the lumbar subarachnoid space in mice, and the ability to change the tail-flick reflex and the tail skin temperature was investigated. Tail-flick latency (the time needed to evoke the tail-flick reflex by noxious radiant heat) was reduced for 1-4 min after intrathecal administration of substance P (5 micrograms), but the tail skin temperature was not significantly changed. Nor was the tail skin temperature significantly changed after intrathecal injection of Spantide (5 microgram…

A preliminary investigation about the observation of regional skin temperatures following cumulative training loads in triathletes during training camp.

There are controversial results in the literature concerning the concept that cumulative training load could affect basal skin temperature in the days following training sessions. The objective was to measure skin temperature in triathletes during a training camp with cumulative training load. Ten male recreational triathletes involved in a training camp underwent measurements of perception of pain and fatigue (visual analogue scale), skin temperature (infrared thermography), and jump performance (counter movement jump test) before, one day, and two days after the beginning of the training cam…

Core Body and Skin Temperature in Type 1 Narcolepsy in Daily Life; Effects of Sodium Oxybate and Prediction of Sleep Attacks.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous laboratory studies in narcolepsy patients showed altered core body and skin temperatures, which are hypothesised to be related to a disturbed sleep wake regulation. In this ambulatory study we assessed temperature profiles in normal daily life, and whether sleep attacks are heralded by changes in skin temperature. Furthermore, the effects of three months of treatment with sodium oxybate (SXB) were investigated. METHODS: Twenty-five narcolepsy patients and 15 healthy controls were included. Core body, proximal and distal skin temperatures, and sleep-wake state were m…

Interactions of mean body and local skin temperatures in the modulation of human forearm and calf blood flows: a three-dimensional description.

AIM: The inter-relationships between mean body and local skin temperatures have previously been established for controlling hand and foot blood flows. Since glabrous skin contains many arteriovenous anastomoses, it was important to repeat those experiments on non-glabrous regions using the same sample and experimental conditions. METHODS: Mild hypothermia (mean body temperature 31.4 °C), normothermia (control: 36.0 °C) and moderate hyperthermia (38.3 °C) were induced and clamped (climate chamber and water-perfusion garment) in eight males. Within each condition, five localised thermal treatme…

A clinical investigation into the relationship between increased periwound skin temperature and local wound infection in patients with chronic leg ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: Increased local temperature is a classic sign of wound infection, and its quantitative measurement has the potential to assist with assessment and diagnosis of chronic deep wound and surrounding skin infection at the bedside. Evidence supporting such use in chronic wound care is very limited. This clinical pilot study was conducted in an attempt to quantify the relationship between increased periwound skin temperature and wound infection, as well as validate use of a handheld infrared thermometer for the wound care practitioner. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using a cross-sect…

Raynaud's phenomenon in vibration syndrome: the impact of cold feet on skin temperature and vasomotion of the hand after immersion in cold water.

Patients with vibration syndrome, suffering from Raynaud's phenomenon, are sensitive to cold. Rewarming time, after local cooling, is delayed. The present study evaluated whether rewarming of the hand after cooling is influenced by the temperature of the feet. In five Japanese patients (former forest workers) with vibration syndrome, suffering from Raynaud's phenomenon, and in five healthy controls, temperature changes of the hand after cooling were registered under the two test situations (on different days) with the feet immersed in water of 35 degrees C or 20 degrees C, respectively. A single dose of oral nattokinase accelerates skin temperature recovery after cold water immersion: A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Nattokinase (NK) intake may improve blood flow; however, its effects on skin temperature, which is predominantly controlled by skin surface blood flow, are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a single dose of NK on changes in skin temperature after cold water immersion. A double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover intervention study was performed on nine healthy men. The participants were randomised to receive either a single dose of 2,000 fibrinolytic units (FU) of NK or a placebo with subsequent crossover. Two hours after supplementation, the participants im…
