Anxiety and perceived psychological stress play an important role in the immune response after exercise.

There are common pathways by which psychological stress and exercise stress alter immunity. However, it remains unknown whether psychological stress plays a role in the in vivo immune response to exercise. We examined the relationship between anxiety and perceived psychological stress reported before exercise and in vivo immunity after exercise using skin sensitisation with Diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP). In a randomised design, sixty four, thoroughly familiarised, males completed widely used psychological instruments to assess state-anxiety and perceived psychological stress before exercise, a

Severe insulin resistance contrasting with mild anthropometric changes in the adipose tissue of HIV-infected children with lipohypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: The HIV-associated lipodystrophic syndrome (HIV-LDS) combines redistribution of fat mass with insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia. We have previously reported that HIV-LDS prevails in children in a comparable pattern as in adults. The metabolic activity itself of the lipodystrophic adipose tissue in HIV infection has been poorly studied. AIM AND METHODS: To assess in situ the insulin sensitivity of the lipohypertrophic subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue using the microdialysis technique in HIV-infected children. Insulin sensitivity, assessed by the inhibition of glycerol rele

Pulsatile growth pattern during catch-up growth in childhood coeliac disease.

Catch-up growth in coeliac disease was thought to be a continuous process and hence linear models have been proposed to interpret the pattern of catch-up growth. Observed longitudinal data do not fit a linear model adequately. The aim of this study is to clarify the pattern of short-term catch-up growth in coeliac patients. Twenty-one coeliac children (aged 6-24 months) entered the study and were monitored at short-time intervals. All showed a "pulsatile" pattern of growth velocity for height, weight, leg length, subscapular and triceps skinfolds. Peaks alternated with troughs at a mean time o

Bedside assessment of skin-fold thickness. A useful measurement for distinguishing Cushing's disease from other causes of hirsutism and oligomenorrhea.

BACKGROUND: The known catabolic effects of glucocorticoid excess on protein metabolism prompted us to devise a method to assess this measure in reproductive-aged females with Cushing's disease. Since collagen protein is a major component of skin, decreased abundance of this protein should cause a reduction in skin-fold thickness. To determine whether skin-fold thickness is useful as an added tool in the diagnosis of Cushing's disease, we compared this value in female patients with Cushing's disease with those who presented with a similar set of symptoms. METHODS: This open prospective study w

Assessment of the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding tube as part of an integrated approach to enteral feeding.

The insertion of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy has been well documented. The possible benefits for patient nutrition and nursing practice have, however, not been assessed. We report a study of enteral feeding by percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in 30 patients, the majority with a persistent vegetative state. All patients had previously been fed through a nasogastric tube using manual administration and a dietitian assessed protein calorie intake. Based upon body mass index (weight/height2), midarm circumference and triceps skinfold thickness, 20 (67%) were malnourished, with 10 patien

Occlusive hydrocolloid dressings decrease keratinocyte population growth fraction and clinical scale and skin thickness in active psoriatic plaques.

Clinical studies suggest a therapeutic role for occlusion in the treatment of psoriasis. Previous studies, using multiparameter RNA/DNA flow cytometric analysis of epidermal suspensions obtained from active plaques, demonstrated increased keratinocyte growth fraction which reversed with successful medical treatment. Because keratinocyte growth fraction reflected disease activity, it was used in this study in addition to clinical evaluations in order to determine the efficacy of occlusion in the treatment of psoriatic plaques. In each of 9 patients, scale, skin thickness and erythema were compa

Behaviour therapy of obese children and results 21 months after treatment.

Two groups of pre-pubescent obese children were given modified behaviour therapy. A shaping procedure was used to bring about changes in quantity and quality of food eaten, physical activities, and eating behaviour. In addition, attempts were made to get the children to distinguish better between hunger and satiation and to improve the interactions between children and parents. The children were trained to effect desired behavioural changes themselves on the basis of their own observations. Four of the 11 children displayed a substantial weight reduction which was maintained in follow-up. In t

An epidemiologic survey of thyroid enlargement among schoolchildren in a non-endemic area.

In 534 unselected schoolchildren aged 6-14 yr from the greater Athens area the size of the thyroid gland was assessed by palpation, and information was obtained on sex, age, height, weight, skinfold thickness, socioeconomic class, eye colour and urinary iodine excretion. The results were analysed by discriminant analysis. Altogether 14% of these children had a thyroid enlargement (7% had a definite goitre and another 7% a smaller enlargement). The set of variables studied were significantly discriminatory (Wilk's lambda 0.926, p approximately equal to 0.004). Most of the discrimination was acc

[Simplified methods for detection of proteino-caloric malnutrition in child (author's transl)].

This paper emphasized proteino-caloric malnutrition (P.C.M.) frequency in the Third-World (in developing countries (i.c. kwashiorkor, marasmus, kwashiorkor associated with marasmus. It is consequently necessary to define some methods of detection able to cope with the conditions prevailing in this part of the world. The conventional classifications and methods of detection appear too sophisticated. These methods mostly rely on body-weight for each age group. But even this apparently simple control is often impossible: lack of scales, ignorance of educated assistants of the true age of the chil

Plasma thyroxine binding prealbumin as an index of mild protein-energy malnutrition in Nigerian children.

Weight, height, midarm circumference (AC), midarm muscle circumference (AMC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), and plasma thyroxine binding (TBPA) were measured in 73 children free from any clinical evidence of disease and in 15 severe protein-energy malnourished (PEM) (marasmus, marasmic kwashiorkor, and kwashiorkor) Nigerian preschool children. The children were divided into various groups according to both Wellcome and Waterlow's classification. All measurements made on them were then compared between the various groups within each classification. It was found that plasma TBPA values were

Obesity and overweight in young adults: the CARDIA study.

The associations of body size with age, race, sex, and education in young adults were examined in 5,115 black and white, men and women ages 18-30 years. Black women were more obese than white women with greater mean levels of body mass index (25.8 vs 23.1 kg/m2), subscapular skinfold thickness (19.9 vs 15.2 mm), and waist girth (76.7 vs 72.0 cm), all P less than 0.0001. Black women were more likely to exceed 20% of ideal body weights (black women 23.7%, white women 9.1%, P less than 0.0001). No similar differences were found in men. Associations of measures of body size with age and education

Dual Metabolic Burden of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) and Gestational Diabetes in Pregnancy: Impact on Neonatal Anthropometry: Insights From the Born in Bradford Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) independently influence foetal growth, but their combined impact remains poorly characterised. This study examined the individual and joint associations of PMOS and GDM with neonatal anthropometry in a large, multi-ethnic population. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of 9454 singleton pregnancies from the Born in Bradford (BiB) cohort (UK, 2007-2011). Women were classified into four groups: (1) normoglycemic non-PMOS controls, (2) PMOS only, (3) GDM only and (4) PMOS + GDM. GDM was def

A low pretransplant peripheral blood mononuclear cell complex I activity predicts metabolic disturbances and inability to regain fat free mass in cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation.

Liver cirrhosis is associated with malnutrition and often, after liver transplantation, with the development of obesity and the inability to gain lean body mass. We have previously shown that peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMNC) complex I activity could be an appropriate marker for nutritional assessment. In this context, we hypothesized that a low pretransplant PBMNC complex I activity may predict a poor nutritional status in cirrhotic patients undergoing liver transplantation. Fifteen cirrhotic patients (CP) (8 men and 7 women) were recruited and investigated before and 4 months after l

Risk factors for early hospital readmission in a select population of geriatric rehabilitation patients: the significance of nutritional status.

OBJECTIVE: To test the strength of the evidence in favor of the hypothesis that protein-energy undernutrition is an independent risk factor for non-elective hospital readmission within 3 months of discharge in a population of elderly hospitalized patients. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of data from prospective observational study. METHODS: All 110 elderly patients admitted to a geriatric recuperative care and rehabilitation unit during a 6-month period completed a comprehensive in-patient evaluation. Ninety-eight of these patients were subsequently discharged alive and followed prospectivel

Body fat estimation in the Mexican women's national soccer team: a cross-sectional agreement study between a derived Mexican Football Federation anthropometric equation and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

BACKGROUND: Precise assessment of body composition is fundamental for monitoring training adaptations, guiding nutritional strategies, and informing performance-related decision-making in elite female soccer. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is considered a reference method; however, its limited accessibility restricts routine use in high-performance settings. Existing anthropometric equations often lack population-specific validation, particularly for elite Mexican female soccer players. This study aimed to derive and internally validate an anthropometric equation for estimating body fa

The Association Between Maternal Adiposity and Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration: Evidence from the Southampton Women's Survey.

BACKGROUND: Most mothers in the UK are not meeting the breastfeeding recommendations set by the World Health Organisation (WHO, Breastfeeding - Recommendations. https://www.who.int/health-topics/breastfeeding#tab=tab_2 , 2023). Maternal obesity has variably been associated with lower initiation and shorter duration of breastfeeding, but few studies have examined the impact of maternal adiposity estimated from skinfold thicknesses. AIM: To investigate the relationship between maternal adiposity and breastfeeding initiation and duration. METHODS: Data from 2,873 mother-offspring pairs in the S
