Trends and predictors of smoking cessation after percutaneous coronary intervention (from Olmsted County, Minnesota, 1999 to 2010).

Smoke-free ordinance implementation and advances in smoking cessation (SC) treatment have occurred in the past decade; however, little is known about their impact on SC in patients with coronary artery disease. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 2,306 consecutive patients from Olmsted County, Minnesota, who underwent their first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from 1999 to 2009, and assessed the trends and predictors of SC after PCI. Smoking status was ascertained by structured telephone survey 6 and 12 months after PCI (ending in 2010). The prevalence of smoking in patients

[Time trends of occupational differences in smoking behaviour of employed men and women in Germany : Results of the 1999-2013 microcensus].

BACKGROUND: Studies show that people with a low occupational status are more likely to smoke than those with a high occupational status. Against the background of a general decline in tobacco consumption, time trends of occupational differences in smoking behaviour of employed men and women in Germany were examined. METHODS: The analyses were based on the last five waves of the German microcensus that included questions about smoking (1999, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2013), taking only employed men and women aged 18-64 years into account (n = 688,746). Information on occupational position was summa

Tobacco use among prison staff in Germany: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies on tobacco in the prison environment report high prevalence of use among detainees, but little data regarding staff are available. An observational study addressing tobacco control in German prisons was conducted in 2011. It involved multiple strands (quantitative and qualitative components) both among detainees and staff. This article presents quantitative results regarding staff. METHODS: Cross-sectional study among prison employees in 16 different institutions in nine regions (Länder) in Germany. Tobacco use and second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure (primary outcomes) were a

Tobacco Control Measures to Reduce Socioeconomic Inequality in Smoking: The Necessity, Time-Course Perspective, and Future Implications.

Previous systematic reviews of population-level tobacco control interventions and their effects on smoking inequality by socioeconomic factors concluded that tobacco taxation reduce smoking inequality by income (although this is not consistent for other socioeconomic factors, such as education). Inconsistent results have been reported for socioeconomic differences, especially for other tobacco control measures, such as smoke-free policies and anti-tobacco media campaigns. To understand smoking inequality itself and to develop strategies to reduce smoking inequality, knowledge of the underlying

Economic evaluation of population-level dementia prevention strategies in China: informing policy and public health action.

INTRODUCTION: While it has been postulated that population-based strategies targeting modifiable dementia risk factors are cost effective in high-income settings, their health and economic impact in China remains unclear. METHODS: A Markov model evaluated five interventions: salt substitution, smoke-free legislation, increased tobacco tax, sugar-sweetened beverage tax, and alcohol tax. Outcomes included dementia cases, deaths averted, life years gained, and lifetime cost-savings, assessed from a societal perspective over an infinite time horizon. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were perform

Best practices for expansion of smoke-free and aerosol-free environments in Europe: Protocol for the consultation to experts.

Smoke-free legislation has been shown to positively impact reducing secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, especially in countries that have implemented comprehensive legislation rather than partial bans. Also, secondhand aerosols (SHA) that come from the heating of tobacco or liquids, with or without nicotine, in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have been proven to increase levels of harmful substances in the air. Therefore, protection against SHS and SHA exposure and expansion of smoke- and aerosol-free environments (SAFE) should be taken into account when creating or trying to expand o

Tobacco control in Europe: progress and key challenges.

We discuss progress made with respect to reducing the burden of disease caused by tobacco use within the WHO European Region and outline major issues and challenges regarding ongoing implementation of tobacco control policy. Although 50 of 53 countries in the WHO European Region are parties to the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC), smoking prevalence varies tremendously between European countries. While smoking rates are decreasing slowly, faster declines among smokers with a higher socioeconomic status are leading to growing inequalities in tobacco use. Governments in Europe

Location and duration of secondhand smoke exposure among Minnesota Nonsmokers, 2018.

In 2007 Minnesota passed into law a comprehensive ban on indoor smoking of tobacco products in public places including bars, restaurants, and workplaces. Despite reductions in smoking prevalence in the past 12 years, people are still exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS). It remains important to understand where and how long nonsmokers face exposure to SHS. The 2018 Minnesota Adult Tobacco Survey was analyzed to examine self-reported SHS exposure among nonsmoking adults. We report prevalence and 95 percent confidence intervals of SHS exposure overall, by specific locations, and by demographics. Le

Machine learning models of tobacco susceptibility and current use among adolescents from 97 countries in the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 2013-2017.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to tobacco initiation and escalation. Identifying factors associated with adolescent tobacco susceptibility and use can guide tobacco prevention efforts. Novel machine learning (ML) approaches efficiently identify interactive relations among factors of tobacco risks and identify high-risk subpopulations that may benefit from targeted prevention interventions. Nationally representative cross-sectional 2013-2017 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data from 97 countries (28 high-income and 69 low-and middle-income countries) from 342,481 adolescents aged 13

Awareness and use of oral tobacco and nicotine products among people who smoke or recently stopped smoking: Descriptive findings from the 2024 EASE/ITC New Zealand Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) disallows sales of oral tobacco and nicotine products, although importation for personal use is permitted. The government proposes legalising sales, claiming this will aid smoking cessation among "older, long-term smokers." We examined awareness and use of tobacco-free oral nicotine products (ONPs), snus, and other oral tobacco products among adults who smoke or who recently stopped smoking. METHODS: We analysed Wave 5 (2024) data from the EASE/International Tobacco Control (ITC) NZ Survey (N=1,371) of adults who smoke or recently stopped smoking. We ex

Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke in Qatar: results from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among women in Qatar is currently low. However, the risk of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke among them is a pressing concern because of the high prevalence of tobacco use by men. AIMS: To describe the prevalence and risk factors for second-hand tobacco smoke exposure at home and at workplaces, schools, cafes, and restaurants in Qatar. METHODS: We analysed data from a population-based survey of 7921 adults aged ≥ 18 years, conducted in Qatar between March and December 2019. Forecasting the effects of smoking prevalence scenarios on years of life lost and life expectancy from 2022 to 2050: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the leading behavioural risk factor for mortality globally, accounting for more than 175 million deaths and nearly 4·30 billion years of life lost (YLLs) from 1990 to 2021. The pace of decline in smoking prevalence has slowed in recent years for many countries, and although strategies have recently been proposed to achieve tobacco-free generations, none have been implemented to date. Assessing what could happen if current trends in smoking prevalence persist, and what could happen if additional smoking prevalence reductions occur, is important for communicating the effec

Sociodemographic, insurance, and risk profiles of maternal smokers post the 1990s: how can we reach them?

Declines in prenatal smoking rates have changed the composition of maternal smokers while public policy during the 1990s has likely made it more difficult to reach them. Medicaid expansions during the 1980s/early 1990s insured more women some time during pregnancy, but the 1996 welfare reform unexpectedly reduced enrollment in Medicaid by eligible pregnant women; overall, insurance coverage has declined since 2000. As the public sector struggles with fewer resources, it is important to understand the sociodemographic characteristics of prenatal smokers, their patterns of care, and nonsmoking r
