In Malaysia, tobacco smoking continues to be one of the leading public health concerns; hence, the tobacco control community aims to see a generation free of tobacco use by 2040. Drafted and presented to the parliament, the Malaysian Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Bill 2022 highlighted the Generational Endgame (GEG) policy, which forbids the use and sale of tobacco products and smoking substances to individuals born on or after 1 January 2007. Stakeholders, including government and non-governmental organisations, policymakers, healthcare professionals, tobacco industry represent

Across West Virginia, tobacco use continues to be a significant public health challenge. Specifically, tobacco use is linked to high poverty across the state and disproportionately affects African Americans. A faith-based tobacco prevention network was formed to address these concerns and increase education and cessation. The West Virginia African American Tobacco Prevention Network (WVAATPN) was formed in 2021 and since then has expanded its reach across the state, involving 22 congregations. The Network's model includes annual training for lay leaders on various tobacco-related topics, tailo

Although there is no doubt that smokers switching to electronic cigarettes (EC) substantially reduce the risk to their health, some tobacco control activists and health organisations discourage smokers from using EC and lobby policy makers to reduce EC use by draconian regulation. The hostility to EC may be related to a moral belief that nicotine use should be eradicated rather than allowed to morph into a relatively harmless activity. If EC are allowed to compete with cigarettes and develop further, smoking is likely to all but disappear. Discouraging smokers from making the switch and reducin

QUESTION: One of my pregnant patients smokes about 20 cigarettes daily. She has tried several times through behavioural therapy to quit, but has been unsuccessful. What do you recommend?
ANSWER: You might consider nicotine replacement therapy and concurrent behavioural counseling. With this therapy, nicotine levels in the body are typically lower than during heavy smoking, and the thousands of other toxins emitted by cigarette smoke, such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, are avoided.

BACKGROUND: High levels of smoking among people who experience imprisonment contribute to their high mortality and morbidity rates and to inequalities. Scotland's prisons became smokefree in 2018. However, questions remain about how to prevent high relapse to smoking post release.
OBJECTIVES: Summarise evidence on supporting people to reduce tobacco-related harms post release. Understand experiences, opportunities and challenges for reducing tobacco-related harms for people leaving smokefree prisons and for families. Feasibility test a household-targeted intervention to support people release

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease worldwide. This study aimed to assess the smoking behaviour of adolescents in two districts of Nepal and examine the implications of the MPOWER policy on their smoking behaviour.
METHODS: An explanatory, mixed-method study was conducted in two districts of Nepal. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted among nine participants aged 35-50, representatives of the Ministry of Health, academic institutions, and managers of organisations working in tobacco control, using snowball sampling method. A total of 3

The goals of tobacco control endgame strategies are specified in terms of the desired levels of tobacco use and/or tobacco related health consequences. Yet the strategies being considered may have other consequences beyond tobacco use prevalence, forms and related harms. Most of the proposed strategies threaten to create large black markets with potential attendant harms: corruption, high illegal earnings, violence and/or organised crime. Western societies of course have considerable experience with these problems in the context of prohibition of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin and met

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown social support and social network variables to be important factors in smoking cessation treatment. Tobacco use is highly prevalent among individuals in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). However, smoking cessation treatment outcomes in this vulnerable subpopulation have been poor and social support and social network variables may contribute.
METHODS: The current study examined the social support and social network characteristics of 151 MMT smokers involved in a randomized clinical trial of smoking cessation treatments. Participants were 50% women

Cigarette smoke consists of several chemical compounds with a variety of effects in many organs. In the lung, apart being the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, carcinoma and idiopathic spontaneous pneumothorax, tobacco smoke is associated with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), including respiratory bronchiolitis-associated ILD (RB-ILD), desquamative interstitial pneumonia (DIP), pulmonary Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (PLCH), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, acute eosinophilic pneumonia, ILD in rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary haemorrhage in Goodpasture syndrome. Smoking among patients with mental illness is a major and underappreciated public health problem. The case of Ms G, a 51-year-old woman with bipolar disorder who wishes to quit smoking, illustrates the importance and feasibility of smoking cessation in patients with psychiatric disorders. Persons with chronic mental illness and/or substance abuse constitute 22% of the US population yet are estimated to consume 44% of cigarettes. As many as 200,000 of the 435,000 annual deaths related to smoking in the United States are estimated to occur in this population. On average, patients with mental ill

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, health and social inequities placed racial and ethnic minority groups at increased risk of severe illness. Our objective was to investigate this health disparity by analyzing the relationship between potential social determinants of health (SDOH), COVID-19, and chronic disease in the spatial context of San Diego County, California.
METHODS: We identified potential SDOH from a Pearson correlation analysis between socioeconomic variables and COVID-19 case rates during 5 pandemic stages, from March 31, 2020, to April 3, 2021. We used ridge regression t

BACKGROUND: As prevalence of tobacco use falls, socioeconomic inequalities in tobacco use are increasing in many high-income countries. Evidence is lacking on the effect of preventive interventions on socioeconomic inequalities in smoking initiation among adolescents. We evaluated whether a multicomponent school-based prevention programme with parental involvement has differential effects on smoking initiation across socioeconomic groups and affects the magnitude of socioeconomic inequalities in smoking initiation.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a 3-year cluster randomised control

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based tobacco prevention and cessation are critical in the college setting. Relative to 4-year institutions, community colleges (CCs) are significantly under resourced in substance prevention. Prior work has demonstrated differences in tobacco use prevalence between 4-year and CC students. The present study expands prior work by examining 4-year and CC student tobacco use patterns across various types of tobacco products and intentions to change, to inform prevention efforts for 4-year and CC campuses.
METHODS: A 2024 statewide (Missouri) survey of 4-year (N = 4,956) an

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States. Individuals with low socioeconomic status have disproportionately high smoking rates and greater difficulty quitting smoking. Efficiently connecting underserved smokers to effective tobacco cessation programs is crucial for disease prevention and the elimination of health disparities. Smartphone-based interventions have the potential to enhance the reach and efficacy of smoking cessation treatments targeting underserved smokers, but there is little efficacy data for these interventions. INTRODUCTION: Using a quasiexperimental design, we compared the impact of the 2000 Canadian introduction of graphic warning labels (GWLs) on differences in smoking prevalence by sex and education, to the United States, where no GWLs were introduced.
METHODS: We pooled 1999-2004 data from the Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey and the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. We used a difference-in-difference (DD) model to assess the impact of Canadian policy introduction on smoking prevalence, and a difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD) model to examine differences in the p

PURPOSE: We aimed to better understand hesitancy to use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to quit smoking.
DESIGN: We content coded and analyzed NRT-related posts in online quit smoking support groups to understand NRT-use hesitancy and to examine associations with health outcomes.
SETTING: NRT posts were analyzed in unmoderated social-media support groups with free NRT.
SAMPLE: Adults who smoked daily (n = 438) and posted about NRT were studied, 339 of whom reported on NRT usage and 403 reported on smoking abstinence.
MEASURES: Surveys at 1-month post-quit date assessed NRT usage and smo

People with a mental illness and/or drug use disorder have a higher rate of smoking than adults in general. To address this challenge, recommendations include integrating tobacco-free policies and tobacco dependency treatment into the behavioral health care delivery system. Currently, little is known regarding levels of such integration. A 65-item Internet survey measuring integration assessed three areas: a) policies addressing the use of tobacco products; b) provision of evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment; and, c) capacity to help employees/volunteers quit tobacco use. The survey wa

This qualitative narrative review examines the potential returns from providing smoking cessation treatments (SCTs) through an insurance plan's standard benefit package versus through an optional supplementary wellness ('rider') program. Research indicates most employers offer SCTs as part of a rider available for purchase. Studies demonstrate that the higher the cost of SCTs, the lower the SCT participation rates; when employees receive SCTs, smoking cessation rates increase, effecting lower employee healthcare costs and improved productivity. Employers may receive a considerable return on th
