Social communication skills profile in infants with sex chromosome trisomy at 12 months of age.

Sex Chromosome Trisomy (SCT) conditions are genetic disorders that affect approximately 1:500 children. Although there is considerable variability in phenotype, individuals with SCT have an elevated likelihood, compared to the general population, of developing social deficits and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies report that 10-35 % of individuals with SCT meet criteria for ASD, depending on differences in ascertainment methods and diagnostic criteria. More specifically, ASD prevalence has been estimated at approximately 18 % (range 10-27 %) for XXY, 15 % (10.8-20 %) for XXX, and 30 % (1

[Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. An underdiagnosed neuro-development disorder of uncertain prognosis].

Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the cause of cognitive and behavioural disorders grouped under the term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The long-term evolution of subjects with FASD is often unfavourable, especially in social and academic fields. Executive dysfunction is a hallmark deficit for children with FASD with increased rates of externalizing behaviours, such as aggressiveness and frequently delinquency in adolescence and adulthood. Deficits in social skills, empathy and communication ability are frequent observed among FASD. Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the most frequent ca

Autism and autistic behavior in Joubert syndrome.

To determine whether individuals with Joubert syndrome exhibit features of autism as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV), we examined 11 children with Joubert syndrome using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Generic. Three children met DSM-IV criteria for autistic disorder and one for pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. The other seven all demonstrated at least one DSM-IV symptom of autism, but did not meet criteria for a pervasive developmental disorder. Both total number of

Assessing autism-like behavior in mice: variations in social interactions among inbred strains.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, with characteristics including impairments in reciprocal social interaction, impaired communication, and repetitive/stereotyped behaviors. Despite decades of research, the etiology of autism remains elusive. Thus, it is important that we pursue all avenues, in attempting to understand this complicated disorder. One such avenue is the development of animal models. While autism may be uniquely human, there are behavioral characteristics of the disorder that can be established in animal models. Evidence supports a genetic component for this disorder,

'More than 100 years of silence', elective mutism: a review of the literature.

Elective mutism is a rare disorder of communication, where the child speaks fluently in familiar situations, such as home, despite lack of speech in less familiar settings, for example school. A variety of temperamental and behaviour characteristics, co-morbid psychiatric conditions, neurodevelopmental delay and family factors have been associated with the disorder. EM children are described as excessively shy, withdrawn, 'slow to warm up', inhibited, often avoid eye contact, fear social embarrassment and experience significant separation anxiety, on separation from their attachment figures. Review of intervention methods for language and communication disorders in children with autism spectrum disorders.

In recent years, the number of patients-particularly children-with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been continually increasing. ASD affects a child's language communication and social interaction to a certain extent and has an impact on behavior, intelligence level, and other aspects of the child. Data indicates that 40% to 70% of children with ASD experience language developmental delays, which are mainly manifested as lack of language or language developmental delay, self-talk, use of stereotyped language, parroting, et cetera. A language communication disorder is a major symptom of ASD a

Social interaction links active musical rhythm engagement and expressive communication in autistic toddlers.

Rhythm is implicated in both social and linguistic development. Rhythm perception and production skills are also key vulnerabilities in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism which impact social communication. However, direct links between musical rhythm engagement and expressive communication in autism is not clearly evident. This absence of a direct connection between rhythm and expressive communication indicates that the mechanism of action between rhythm and expressive communication may recruit other cognitive or developmental factors. We hypothesized that social interactions, includi

Learning the Mental Health Impact of COVID-19 in the United States With Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health, economic, and social fabric of many nations worldwide. Identification of individual-level susceptibility factors may help people in identifying and managing their emotional, psychological, and social well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study is focused on learning a ranked list of factors that could indicate a predisposition to a mental disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: In this study, we have used a survey of 17,764 adults in the United States from different age groups, genders, and socioeconomic statuses. Through initial stati

Autism in adults: symptom patterns and early childhood predictors. Use of the DISCO in a community sample followed from childhood.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have looked at the very long-term outcome of individuals with autism who were diagnosed in childhood. METHODS: A longitudinal, prospective, community-based follow-up study of adults who had received the diagnosis of autism (classic and atypical) in childhood (n = 105) was conducted. A structured interview (the Diagnostic Interview for Social and COmmunication disorders--the DISCO) was used in order to evaluate symptoms and symptom patterns 13-22 years after original diagnosis. Childhood measures, including IQ-level at time of childhood diagnosis and communicative speec

The relationship between executive function abilities, adaptive behaviour, and academic achievement in children with externalising behaviour problems.

BACKGROUND: Specific domains of adaptive behaviours and academic achievement may, in part, depend on executive function capacities. Executive function deficits have been found to be associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), not Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder (ODD/CD). METHOD: Using a sample of 110 adolescents, comprising four groups, ADHD only, co-morbid ADHD and ODD/CD, ODD/CD only, and a normal community control group, we assessed socialisation and communication skills with the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, along with reading ability, and executi

Latent class analysis reveals five homogeneous behavioural and developmental profiles in a large Dutch population sample of infants aged 14-15 months.

Precursors of child psychiatric disorders are often present in infancy, but little is known about the prevalence and course of general psychopathology in population-based samples of children 0-3 years. We examined whether homogeneous behavioural and developmental profiles could be identified in children aged 14-15 months (M = 14.84; SD = 2.19), and we explored whether or not these profiles corresponded with existing classifications of DSM-IV-TR, ICD-10, and DC 0-3R. Parents of 6,330 children answered 74 items about externalizing, internalizing, and social-communicative behaviour. Exploratory f

A transdiagnostic study of theory of mind in children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) is fundamental for social interactions, allowing individuals to appreciate that others have their own mental states. Children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)) often show differences in ToM abilities compared to their neurotypical (NT) peers. Given the phenotypic heterogeneity and overlap associated with these conditions, this motivates a transdiagnostic investigation of ToM across neurodevelopmental conditions. METHODS: Five hundred and fifty-fi

Identification of a β-Arrestin 2 Mutation Related to Autism by Whole-Exome Sequencing.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological disease characterized by impaired social communication and interaction skills, rigid behavior, decreased interest, and repetitive activities. The disease has a high degree of genetic heterogeneity, and the genetic cause of ASD in many autistic individuals is currently unclear. In this study, we report a patient with ASD whose clinical features included social interaction disorder, communication disorder, and repetitive behavior. We examined the patient's genetic variation using whole-exome sequencing technology and found new de novo muta

Treatment of motor aprosodia with pitch biofeedback and expression modelling.

In motor aprosodia, imitation and production of emotional prosody and facial gestures are compromised. Despite the frequency with which aprosodia occurs after brain damage, and its potential to cause social and vocational disability, no formal treatments are available for this disorder. A case of motor aprosodia treated with voice pitch biofeedback and modelling of affective communication is presented. Utilizing the patient as her own control, the affective communication treatment was compared to traditional rehabilitation therapy. The results obtained suggest that affective communication trea

Use of community support services by middle-aged and older patients with psychotic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The study sought to determine the degree to which use of community services is related to predisposing, enabling, and need factors among older patients with psychotic disorders who live in the community and to assess whether high use of community services is associated with improving or declining psychopathology. METHODS: The sample consisted of 89 middle-aged and elderly community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. Assessments at baseline and two follow-ups at six-month intervals included measures of psychopathology, well-being, and social adjustmen

Attentional Orienting and Disfluency-Related Memory Boost Are Intact in Adults With Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with a range of cognitive-communicative deficits that interfere with everyday communication and social interaction. Considerable effort has been directed at characterizing the nature and scope of cognitive-communication disorders in TBI, yet the underlying mechanisms of impairment are largely unspecified. The present research examines sensitivity to a common communicative cue, disfluency, and its impact on memory for spoken language in TBI. METHOD: Fifty-three participants with moderate-severe TBI and 53 noninjured comparison participants li

Incorporating discriminative stimuli into functional communication training with augmentative and alternative communication devices: a tutorial.

Functional communication training (FCT) is a commonly used and effective treatment for problem behavior maintained by social reinforcement (e.g., an individual engages in self-injurious behavior to gain access to adult attention). FCT involves teaching an individual to emit an appropriate communication response to access the reinforcer maintaining problem behavior (e.g., pressing a "Play, please" symbol on a device to gain the communication partner's attention) and withholding that reinforcer following problem behavior (e.g., the communication partner minimizes attention-following problem beha

Associations Between Hyperphagia, Symptoms of Sleep Breathing Disorder, Behaviour Difficulties and Caregiver Well-Being in Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Preliminary Study.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by neurodevelopmental delays, hyperphagia, difficulties with social communication and challenging behaviours. Individuals require intensive supervision from caregivers which may negatively affect caregiver quality of life. This study used data collected in the Australasian PWS Registry (n = 50, mean age 11.2 years) to evaluate associations between child behaviours and caregiver mental well-being. Symptoms of sleep-related breathing disorder, child depression and social difficulties were associated with poorer caregiver mental

Mental health and neurodevelopment in children and adolescents with Turner syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Turner syndrome (TS) is a rare sex chromosome aneuploidy, with an incidence of four in 10,000 new-born girls. TS is often associated with impaired social communication skills, but the extent to which these are attributable to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is uncertain. We made standardized assessments of the mental health and associated neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents with TS and report on the prevalence of concurrent conditions. METHODS: Our sample comprised 127 girls with TS, 5-19 years of age. We obtained reports of their mental health from a combinat
