Effects of sources of social support and resilience on the mental health of different age groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: A pandemic is a very stressful event, especially for highly vulnerable people (e.g., older adults). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the main and interactive relationships of social support and resilience on individual mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic across three age groups: emerging adults, adults, and older adults. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 23,192 participants aged 18-85. Respondents completed a questionnaire, including items on the COVID-19-related support they perceived from different sources, the abbreviated version of the Connor-David

Does Shyness Vary According to Attained Social Roles? Trends Across Age Groups in a Large British Sample.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated (a) how a composite measure of shyness comprising introversion and neuroticism relates to other well-known constructs involving social fears, and (b) whether mean levels of shyness vary for men and women depending on the adoption of various social roles. METHOD: Study 1 used a sample of 211 UK participants aged 17-70 (64% female; Mage  = 47.90). Study 2 used data from a large cross-sectional data set with UK participants aged 17-70 (Ntarget  = 552,663; 64% female; Mage  = 34.19 years). RESULTS: Study 1 showed that shyness measured as a composite of i

E-mail support as an adjunct to cognitive-behavioral group therapy for social anxiety disorder: Impact on dropout and outcome.

The present study evaluates the impact of semi-individualized e-mail support as an adjunct to cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) on dropout and outcome. The effectiveness of additional semi-individualized e-mail support was evaluated for the whole sample and for a subsample of patients at risk of dropping out of therapy. A total of 91 patients with SAD were allocated either to the intervention condition (CBGT with e-mail support), or to the control condition (CBGT without e-mail support). Anxiety symptoms, depression, global symptomatology and life sati

The Effects of Waiting for Treatment: A Meta-Analysis of Waitlist Control Groups in Randomized Controlled Trials for Social Anxiety Disorder.

UNLABELLED: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent mental disorder. However, little is known about how SAD changes in subjects who do not receive treatment. Waitlist control groups (WLCGs) are frequently included in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the treatment of mental disorders. Data from WLCGs are of value as they provide information on the untreated short-term course of a disorder and may serve as disorder-specific norms of change (benchmarks) against which treatment outcomes of SAD can be compared. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis focusing on the effects occurring i

Spatial patterns of air pollutants and social groups: a distributive environmental justice study in the phoenix metropolitan region of USA.

Quantifying spatial distribution patterns of air pollutants is imperative to understand environmental justice issues. Here we present a landscape-based hierarchical approach in which air pollution variables are regressed against population demographics on multiple spatiotemporal scales. Using this approach, we investigated the potential problem of distributive environmental justice in the Phoenix metropolitan region, focusing on ambient ozone and particulate matter. Pollution surfaces (maps) are evaluated against the demographics of class, age, race (African American, Native American), and eth

Assessing the impact of humidex on HFMD in Guangdong Province and its variability across social-economic status and age groups.

Humidex is a meteorological index that combines the impacts of temperature and humidity, and is directly comparable with dry temperature in degrees Celsius. However, to date, no research has focused on the effect of humidex on hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). The current study was designed to address this research need. Case-based HFMD surveillance data and daily meteorological data collected between 2010 and 2012 was obtained from the China CDC and the National Meteorological Information Center, respectively. Distributed lag nonlinear models were applied to assess the impact of humidex on

The influence of individual, social group and household factors on the distribution of Ascaris lumbricoides within a community and implications for control strategies.

The distribution of Ascaris lumbricoides within a community was examined at an initial mass anthelmintic treatment programme (January 1984) and following an 11-month period of reinfection (November 1984). Similar patterns of the negative binomial parameter kappa (an inverse measure of parasite aggregation) and the proportion of parasites within the most heavily infected quartile of the community were recorded at the two dates. The pattern of parasite aggregation within individuals, measured by parameter k, appears to be a stable characteristic of this host-parasite relationship. Significant va

AI-enabled integrated employment ecosystem for socially vulnerable groups: a multiple case study and design-research approach.

Population aging and digital transformation are intersecting forces that intensify the structural exclusion of older adults and persons with disabilities from contemporary labor markets. Welfare systems and scholarly literature alike remain fragmented along single-group axes, leaving this compounded inequality without an integrative response. Drawing on a multiple case study of Testworks, Kakao, and Microsoft, combined with a design-research approach, this study identifies three mechanisms through which artificial intelligence enables inclusive employment: strength matching, education-to-emplo

Durkheim, Indoctrinability and the Moral Ambivalence of Human Sociality : An Evolutionary Multilevel Model of Cultural Transmission, Cooperation and Group-Boundaries.

Humans tend to be prosocial towards in-group members, but often hostile towards out-group members. In line with ethology and evolutionary psychology, this study develops the concept of Durkheimian learning, meaning that groups actively integrate individuals by cultural transmission of behavioral norms. Yet humans might have genetically evolved predispositions for indoctrinability and constrained learning of what is adaptive for self-interested individuals living in groups. In-group prosociality might have coevolved with tendencies towards out-group rejection. The mechanism behind this outcome

The Contribution of Social and Structural Determinants of Health Deficits to Mental and Behavioral Health Among a Diverse Group of Young People.

A growing knowledge base highlights the importance of accounting for a variety of social and structural determinants of health (SDOH) when understanding mental and behavioral health among adolescents and young adults. The objective of the current study is to examine patterns of self-reported SDOH deficits and characterize participant health indicators and social identity across classes. Data is from a cross-sectional national study of young people who were recruited through study advertisements on social media and surveyed online. Data were collected between June 2022 and October 2023. Eligibi

Academic orientation and alcohol-related harm among adolescents : Does the inclusion of a disadvantaged group add to the social gradient?

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the social gradient in self-reported alcohol-related harm (ARH) among young alcohol consumers by including a largely overlooked group of adolescents. We also explored the extent to which such a gradient could be attributed to differential exposure or differential vulnerability to risk factors. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey of upper-secondary students (n = 2996) in Sweden. Negative binomial regressions estimated the relationship between academic orientation (higher education preparatory; HEP, vocational; VP and introductory; IP) and ARH. To assess the c

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioral group therapy, psychodrama, and their integration for treatment of social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT) is an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder, many socially anxious patients are still symptomatic after treatment. A possible improvement for CBGT could come from the more experiential group psychotherapy, psychodrama (PD). The integration of CBGT and PD (labeled CBPT) might offer an even more effective treatment than CBGT or PD alone. With the present study, we investigated first whether three kinds of group therapy (CBGT, PD, and CBPT) are superior to a waitlist (WL). Second, we investigated whether CBPT

Exploring the enablers and barriers to social prescribing for people living with long-term neurological conditions: a focus group investigation.

BACKGROUND: People living with Long Term Neurological Conditions (LTNCs) value peer support and social activities. Psychological support and wellbeing enables them to manage their condition. Social prescribing is a formal process of referring patients to a link worker to co-design a plan to improve their health and wellbeing. Intervention involves supporting participation in activities based within the individual's local community. This study aimed to explore the barriers and enablers to accessing social prescribing for people living with LTNCs (plwLTNCs). METHODS: A total of four focus group

Social Media as a Source of Medical Information for Parents of Premature Infants: A Content Analysis of Prematurity-Related Facebook Groups.

OBJECTIVE: Parents are increasingly turning to social media for medical recommendations. Our objective was to systematically examine posts on Facebook for parents of infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to analyze how advice on medical topics was requested and given, and whether this advice was potentially medically inappropriate. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred Facebook groups were screened for study eligibility. In each group, up to 400 posts on medical topics were evaluated. The first 10 comments of each post were classified based on content and presence of medical adv

Islet transplantation from a nationally funded UK centre reaches socially deprived groups and improves metabolic outcomes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Type 1 diabetes complicated by hypoglycaemia is prevalent in socioeconomically deprived populations. Islet transplantation is of proven efficacy in type 1 diabetes complicated by hypoglycaemia, but it is not known if nationally funded programmes reach the socioeconomically deprived. Our aim was to determine: (1) socioeconomic indices in participants referred to our nationally funded programme; and (2) if metabolic outcomes in our transplant recipients were improved. METHODS: Participants referred (n = 106) and receiving transplants (n = 18; 32 infusions) were examined with re
