BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder characterized by hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive symptoms. Adults with ADHD often report reduced quality of life (QoL) across social, educational, and occupational functioning. Part of these deficits may be attributed to stigma, which includes stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and negative labelling. While stigma's effects on QoL have been extensively documented in other mental health conditions, the specific types and impacts of stigma experienced by adults with ADHD remain underexplored in recent revi

AIM: To explore experiences of stigma in people with inflammatory bowel disease.
BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea, urgency and incontinence are common symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease. Social rules stipulate full control of bodily functions in adulthood: poor control may lead to stigmatization, affecting patients' adjustment to disease. Disease-related stigma is associated with poorer clinical outcomes, but qualitative evidence is minimal.
DESIGN: An interpretive (hermeneutic) phenomenological study of the lived experience of stigma in inflammatory bowel disease.
METHODS: Forty community-dwellin

Women living with HIV (WLWH) who inject drugs experience intersecting forms of stigma that adversely impact care engagement and health outcomes. We used latent profile analysis to identify typologies of intersecting stigma among WLWH who inject drugs and examined individual, social, and health care-related factors associated with these typologies. Surveys were collected from WLWH in Ukraine (n = 297) between 2019 and 2020. Six scales for internalized and enacted stigma related to HIV and drug use were used, then multinomial logistic regression assessed factors associated with profile membershi

The Republic of Georgia has experienced a rapid growth in the number of youth working and/or living on the street (YWLS). Although research indicates that YWLS are highly stigmatized, few studies have examined perceptions of stigma among Georgian social service providers who serve YWLS. We conducted in-person in-depth interviews with key informants recruited from governmental institutions and social service organizations in Tbilisi and Rustavi, two large urban areas. A semi-structured interview guide was used to explore provider perspectives on the social contexts surrounding the delivery of s

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma in epilepsy is conceptualized as enacted and felt stigma. Individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) often face challenges that affect their self-perception and social engagement. This study explored the factors contributing to enacted and felt stigma among patients with TLE, considering both objective and subjective cognitive functions alongside biopsychosocial factors as explanatory variables.
METHODS: The analysis included a total of 249 patients: 169 with TLE (90 females, 18-75 years) and with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and 80 with other types of epilepsy (40

INTRODUCTION: Stigma in psychiatry and mental health remains a major barrier to access to care, recovery, and social inclusion. It manifests through stereotypes, discrimination, and self-stigma, thereby exacerbating psychological distress and social inequalities. This article aims to analyze, in France and across Europe, the determinants of the effectiveness of protective factors against stigma in the fields of psychiatry and mental health.
METHODS: We conducted a critical narrative review covering the period 2015–2025, based on a structured search of PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopu

Stigma associated with tuberculosis (TB) and other diseases can have severe consequences on patient care and treatment outcomes. It is closely linked to social behaviour and deep rooted taboos.Stigma reduces trust in caregivers, leading to less attention to doctor's advice, lack of follow-up and poor adherence to treatment. To avoid facing stigma, patients may ignore treatment recommendations, ultimately creating problems in managing their disease. Stigma is a significant factor in delaying or avoiding treatment, not only in TB but also in mental illness, anxiety, depression, as it affects app

The USA incarcerates more people than any other nation in the world. Exposure to the criminal legal system has been associated with a myriad of health outcomes but less is understood about what drives these associations. We argue that stigma due to criminal legal involvement, what we call criminal legal stigma, likely has a larger role in the association between incarceration and negative health outcomes than has been previously appreciated. There is limited research on the impact on health of criminal legal stigma despite abundant research on its negative social consequences. In this paper, w

BACKGROUND: Stigma significantly impacts individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their caregivers, exacerbating social isolation, psychological distress, and reducing quality of life (QoL). Although considerable research has been conducted on PD's clinical aspects, the social and emotional challenges, like stigma, remain underexplored. Addressing stigma is crucial for enhancing well-being, fostering inclusivity and improving access to care and support. The review aims to fill this knowledge gap by synthesising existing literature on PD stigma, examining its effects on individuals and fam

BACKGROUND: Stigma remains a pervasive barrier to the health and well-being of people living with HIV (PLHIV), affecting access to treatment and care. In Nepal, discriminatory attitudes and behaviors persist across all levels, often resulting in mental distress, social isolation, and delayed care-seeking. Guided by the Intersectional Stigma Framework, this study explored how lived HIV -related stigma operates across individual, interpersonal, community, and structural levels, and how existing social and institutional mechanisms shape the lived experiences of PLHIV. METHODS: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) can substantially impact quality of life and possibilities for social participation. An integrative analysis of determinants of self-stigma has been lacking.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore which complementary insights from qualitative and quantitative studies, as well as from expert consultation, could be gained.
METHODS: An established mixed methods study design was employed to first conduct a mixed methods scoping review of published qualitative and quantitative literature, and then consult with experts to arrive at an exhaus

Our study examined how perceived stigma influences multidimensional frailty among older adults living with HIV. In this cross-sectional study, 591 older people living with HIV (PWH) were recruited from a designated HIV institute in Shanghai, China, between December 2022 and October 2023. The participants completed face-to-face surveys that assessed five domains: perceived stigma, social support, social isolation, loneliness, and multidimensional frailty. SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 23.0 were used to conduct path analysis and examine the relationships between these variables. Perceived stigma had a sign

BACKGROUND: Annual HIV testing is recommended for populations at-risk for HIV in the United States, including heterosexuals geographically connected to urban high-risk areas (HRA) with elevated rates of HIV prevalence and poverty, who are primarily African American/Black or Hispanic. Yet this subpopulation of "individuals residing in HRA" (IR-HRA) evidence low rates of regular HIV testing. HIV stigma is a recognized primary barrier to testing, in part due to its interaction with other stigmatized social identities. Guided by social-cognitive and intersectionality theories, this qualitative des

Autistic people frequently experience stigma that can be expressed whether consciously or unconsciously. This study examined how familiarity with autistic people, factual knowledge about autism, sociodemographic characteristics, and cultural value orientations relate to three facets of autism stigma: desired social distance, stereotypical beliefs, and implicit bias. French adults (N = 277) completed online measures of autism knowledge, familiarity, social distance, and stereotypes, a cultural orientation scale, and an Implicit Association Test assessing automatic evaluations of autism. Results

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the most commonly consumed psycho-active substance in India. People who use substances and are in recovery often face societal discrimination and rejection, such as difficulty in obtaining employment, poor support for treatment, and inter-personal rejection.
AIM: To find out the factors affecting the integration of people recovering from alcohol dependence syndrome with their families.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted using a purposive sampling technique among 50 pairs of alcohol-dependent people and their family members. Data

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for depressive symptoms, partly due to stigma related to both sexual minority status and HIV. In the Chinese sociocultural context, sexual minority stigma is deeply intertwined with HIV-related stigma, shaping access to social support, intimate relationships, and mental health outcomes. In China, minority stress is also shaped by structural pressures such as strong family expectations regarding heterosexual marriage and limited institutional protections, which may constrain social support and strain intimate relationships. Although t

Mental health stigma is shaped by complex social and representational processes increasingly influenced by digital and algorithmic environments. Despite the rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI), little is known about how AI-generated visual representations may affect stigma-related responses. Because generative AI systems may reproduce and amplify stereotypes embedded in their training data and in the prompts used to guide image generation, they represent an increasingly relevant channel through which visual representations of mental illness are produced and disseminated.

BACKGROUND: Elevated depressive symptoms are observed in a significant number of youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and have been linked to illness stigma and social isolation. Body image dissatisfaction is an understudied variable in the pediatric IBD literature that may be related to both stigma and social difficulties. It is suspected that, due to the stigmatizing nature of IBD, some youth may feel self-conscious about their body image, which contributes to decreased feelings of social belongingness and ultimately depressive symptoms. The current study tested an illness stigma→ bod

Weight stigma is a pervasive social problem, and this paper reviews the evidence linking weight stigma to eating behavior. Correlational studies consistently find that experiences with weight stigma are associated with unhealthy eating behaviors and eating pathology (such as binge eating, skipping meals), although results vary somewhat depending on the sample being studied and the specific stigma/eating constructs being assessed. Experimental studies consistently find that manipulations such as priming overweight stereotypes, exposure to stigmatizing content, and social exclusion all lead to i
