Re-incarceration and associated social, structural and behavioural factors among people who use drugs in an urban Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) are disproportionately incarcerated, however little is known about specific substance use, social and structural factors associated with re-incarceration among PWUD. We aimed to identify the socio-structural and substance use factors associated with re-incarceration among structurally-marginalized PWUD. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from two prospective cohorts of PWUD in Vancouver, Canada. We included adults reporting at least one incarceration event in the last six months and who completed at least one additional follow-up study visit. We perform

Social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV healthcare and harm reduction services for people experiencing syndemics in Manitoba: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Manitoba, Canada, there has been an increase in the number of people newly diagnosed with HIV and those not returning for regular HIV care. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased sex and gender disparities in disease risk and mortalities, decreased harm reduction services and reduced access to healthcare. These health crises intersect with increased drug use and drug poisoning deaths, houselessness and other structural and social factors most acutely among historically underserved groups. We aim to explore the social and structural barriers and facilitators to HIV care an

Social-spatial network structures among young urban and suburban persons who inject drugs in a large metropolitan area.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies underscore the significance of adopting a syndemics approach to study opioid misuse, overdose, hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV infections, within the broader context of social and environmental contexts in already marginalized communities. Social interactions and spatial contexts are crucial structural factors that remain relatively underexplored. This study examines the intersections of social interactions and spatial contexts around injection drug use. More specifically, we investigate the experiences of different residential groups among young (aged 18-30) people who in

Development of a Comprehensive Battery to Collect Social and Structural Determinants of Health (SSDOH) in Cognitively Normal or Very Mildly Impaired Persons.

INTRODUCTION: Research addressing Alzheimer disease and related dementias must examine nonbiological factors influencing the risk for and expression of Alzheimer disease and related dementias. These factors address the interplay of cognition with lived experiences and social and structural determinants of health (SSDOH). However, coordinated measures of SSDOH are limited. METHODS: The Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC) at Washington University in St. Louis developed and piloted a comprehensive battery to measure SSDOH. One hundred and twelve participants, very mildly cognitively

Identifying Patterns of Social and Economic Hardship Among Structurally Vulnerable Women: A Latent Class Analysis of HIV/STI Risk.

Women who are structurally vulnerable are at heightened risk for HIV/STIs. Identifying typologies of structural vulnerability that drive HIV/STI risk behavior is critical to understanding the nature of women's risk. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify exotic dancers (n = 117) into subgroups based on response patterns of four vulnerability indicators. Latent class regression models tested whether sex- and drug-related risk behavior differed by vulnerability subgroup. Prevalence of vulnerability indicators varied across housing instability (39%), financial insecurity (39%), limited

Sustained High HIV Incidence in Young Women in Southern Africa: Social, Behavioral, and Structural Factors and Emerging Intervention Approaches.

Young women in southern Africa experience some of the highest incidence rates of HIV infection in the world. Across southern Africa, HIV prevalence among women increases rapidly between the teenage years and young adulthood. Adult HIV prevalence is 16.8 % in South Africa, 23 % in Botswana, 23 % in Lesotho, and 26.5 % in Swaziland. Existing research has illuminated some of the key social, behavioral, and structural factors associated with young women's disproportionate HIV risk, including gendered social norms that advantage male power in sexual relationships and age disparities in relationship

Are social pressure, bullying and low social support associated with depressive symptoms, self-harm and self-directed violence among adolescents? A cross-sectional study using a structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: More in-depth evidence about the complex relationships between different risk factors and mental health among adolescents has been warranted. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of experiencing social pressure, bullying, and low social support on mental health problems in adolescence. METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 among 15 823 Norwegian adolescents, aged 13-19 years. Structural Equation Modelling was used to assess the relationships between socioeconomic status, social pressure, bullying, social support, d

HIV vulnerability among adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review of individual social and structural determinants.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15 to 24 years continue to bear a disproportionate burden of HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Although substantial research has examined behavioral risk factors, evidence on how individual, interpersonal, and structural determinants interact to shape HIV vulnerability remains fragmented. A clearer synthesis of these intersecting determinants is essential for informing integrated HIV prevention strategies and guiding the implementation of emerging biomedical interventions such as long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis. METHODS: A syst

Academic procrastination as a mediator linking fear of missing out and social phobia to smartphone addiction among university students: a structural model.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone addiction is increasing among university students, yet the psychological and behavioral mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain insufficiently understood. Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and social phobia are known predictors of problematic smartphone use, but the role of academic procrastination as a mediating mechanism has not been fully explored, particularly in Jordanian populations. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating role of academic procrastination in linking FoMO and social phobia to smartphone addiction among Jordanian university students. METHODS: A sa

Beyond the Individual: The Weight of Social and Structural Determinants of Depression Among Transgender Women Living with HIV in France (ANRS-Trans&HIV).

Understanding the drivers of depression among transgender women living with HIV (TWLH) is essential to developing appropriate interventions. Using data from ANRS-Trans&HIV (2020-2022), multivariable modified Poisson regressions were used to identify individual, social, and structural determinants of depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 8) among TWLH. Of 493 participants, one-third (31%) had moderate-to-severe depression. In multivariable analyses, lifetime violence, declaring harassment by strangers in public spaces because of their transgender identity, financial difficulty, and a long delay between HIV diagn

Structural and social determinants of dementia risk among adults racialized as Black: Results from a community-based system dynamics approach.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) disproportionately affect Black Americans compared to non-Hispanic White individuals. We examined perceived dementia risk factors among Black adults in St. Louis via a participatory approach. METHODS: In 36 community-based system dynamics workshops (CBSD), 234 participants co-created causal loop diagrams capturing influences on dementia. We analyzed these diagrams using ecological methods to identify a shared core model and examine variation by neighborhood-level deprivation. RESULTS: CBSD revealed a framework for how economic ha

Cumulative determinants of adolescent health indicators: the effects of social and structural determinants of health and child sexual abuse on overdose and suicide attempt.

BACKGROUND: Research has increasingly focused on the role of social and structural determinants of health (SDoH) in shaping behavioral and mental health-related outcomes, including suicide and substance use disorder. While child sexual abuse (CSA) is a well-established risk factor for these outcomes, less is known about the association with image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and its relationship to suicide and overdose risk. Moreover, limited research has explored the interaction between abuse experiences and SDoH deficits, particularly how cumulative disadvantages may exacerbate these risks. ME
