INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: In the preclinical phase of myxomatous mitral valve disease, pimobendan administration to dogs with cardiomegaly reduces cardiac dimensions and risk of congestive heart failure (CHF). Administration of pimobendan to dogs with CHF prolongs survival. Increasing proportions of dogs are administered preclinical pimobendan; however, the influence of this on CHF survival time in dogs that progress to CHF has not been explored in a multicentre study.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a multicentre retrospective study comparing survival time from the onset of CHF in 137

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mitral valve repair (MVR) under cardiopulmonary bypass is an established procedure associated with prolonged survival in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease compared to medical management alone. This study aimed (1) to assess the degree and timescale of left heart reverse remodeling in dogs undergoing MVR and (2) to identify demographic and perioperative echocardiographic variables predictive of persistent left heart enlargement after MVR.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective longitudinal observational study including 66 dogs undergoing MVR a

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: The ellipsoid method estimates left atrial (LA) volume using only linear diameters and may offer a practical volumetric alternative to the left atrial-to-aortic root ratio (LA/Ao). The aim of this study was to compare variations of the ellipsoid model with LA/Ao and planar volumetric methods, using real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT3D) as the reference standard.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Seventy dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (43 stage B1, 17 stage B2, and 10 stages C/D) were prospectively imaged; 32 (17 stage B1, 10 stage B2, and five

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Right pulmonary vein-to-right pulmonary artery (RPV/RPA) ratio, measured at the end of the T wave, helps identify congestive heart failure in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). The aim of this study was to investigate if RPV/RPA, measured at different time points during cardiac cycle, and RPV indexed to the aortic root (Ao) would help to identify MMVD dogs in stage C.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dogs affected by different stages of MMVD were prospectively enrolled in the present study. The RPV/RPA was measured at their maximum and minimum diameters,

Left-sided congestive heart failure was diagnosed in a 2.6-kg 13-year-old neutered male Yorkshire terrier by compatible clinical signs and findings on thoracic radiographs. Echocardiography revealed left atrium enlargement, left ventricular concentric hypertrophy, and thickening and stenosis of the mitral and aortic valves (AVs). A hypercoagulable state, chronic kidney disease, and a portal vein thrombus were identified. Medical management and balloon valvuloplasty of the AV provided good quality of life for nine months since diagnosis, but ultimately, recurrent episodes of pulmonary oedema an

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary stenosis (PS) is a common congenital heart disease in dogs, often associated with poststenotic dilation of the pulmonary trunk or main pulmonary artery (MPA). We hypothesized that vertebrae-based radiographic measurement of the MPA might identify dogs with PS and potentially assess its severity.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 29 dogs with PS, 30 normal dogs, and 30 dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease was conducted. Vertebral main pulmonary artery size (VMPS) was measured using dorsoventral (vertebral main pulmonary art

A two-year-old female spayed Great Pyrenees dog was presented for an echocardiogram after a dilated aortic root and ascending aorta were found on a routine echocardiogram examination one year prior. A suspected aortic dissection was detected on the recheck echocardiogram, which was confirmed with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Subsequent genetic sequencing confirmed nucleotide variants of several connective tissue- associated proteins, of which three are known to be associated with connective tissue disorders in humans, including ADAMTS3, ADAMTSL2, and SMAD4. The dog was subclinical at th

Ventriculophasic response (VR) in atrioventricular nodal (AVN) block is characterized by a shortening of the sinoatrial cycle length when a QRS complex is interposed between two P waves. This has been well documented in humans and dogs with AVN blocks but not in horses. Herein, we describe a horse with second-degree AVN blocks and constant PR intervals that exhibited 5:3 conduction and suspected VR at rest but less consistently after submaximal exercise. Proposed VR mechanisms include (1) inhibition of the Bezold-Jarisch reflex from reduced end-systolic volume during ventricular contraction; (

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Left atrial dimensions correlate with body weight (BW) in cats. Atrial dimensions can be obtained from both right parasternal long-axis (RPLAx) and right parasternal short-axis images. However, reference ranges for RPLAx-derived left atrial diameter (LAD) obtained from a large sample of healthy cats are needed. This study measured LAD from the RPLAx view and calculated a normalized value to BW (LADn) and left atrial diameter-to-aortic annulus ratio (LAD:Ao). Study aims included developing prediction intervals for LADn, defining reference intervals for LAD:Ao, and inves

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Agitated saline contrast echocardiography (ASCE) has traditionally been used to identify the presence of right-to-left intracardiac shunts in dogs. In normal humans, contrast (microbubbles) commonly appears in the left heart following agitated saline contrast injection into a systemic vein via intrapulmonary (IP) shunting. The aim of this study was to determine whether this phenomenon also occurs in dogs.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS, AND METHODS: Forty-eight dogs with either a normal echocardiogram or trivial to mild mitral regurgitation were studied. A standard ASCE protocol

A 10-week-old female Oriental shorthair was referred due to stunted growth, weight loss, dyspnea, and reduced activity levels compared to her littermates. Thoracic radiography revealed a markedly enlarged cardiac silhouette and a diffuse unstructured interstitial pulmonary pattern, presumably due to cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Echocardiography showed marked left- and right-sided ventricular dilation, decreased contractility, and enlargement of both atria, without any identifiable congenital defects. Pleural and peritoneal effusion were also present. Based on these findings, a presumptive diag

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Heart base tumors (HBTs) including chemodectomas are common in dogs, especially in brachycephalic breeds. These tumors are often incidental findings but can also lead to clinical signs from vascular obstruction, tumor invasion, pericardial effusion, or metastasis. This retrospective study describes clinical and imaging findings of HBTs in 32 French Bulldogs.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of medical records focused on French Bulldogs diagnosed with HBTs (April 2019 to October 2022) was conducted. Cases were divided into two groups: dogs with incidental HBTs

A 1.8-year-old, 7.7-kg male mixed-breed dog was examined before castration surgery. Thoracic radiographs showed a prominent bulging of the cardiac silhouette. Echocardiography revealed a partial absence of the bright pericardial signal in the right ventricular outflow tract. Fluoroscopy revealed a bulging pulsating sac anterior to the right ventricular outflow tract. On contrast-enhanced computed tomography, a balloon-shaped right ventricular lumen protruding in the cranial direction was seen on the cranial side of the right ventricle near the pulmonary infundibulum. Accordingly, right ventric

An 11-year-old Cocker spaniel was referred with a one-day history of lethargy. Upon presentation, cardiac auscultation revealed a tachyarrhythmia. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography with concurrent electrocardiographic tracing showed biventricular systolic dysfunction, mild left atrial dilation, functional mitral and tricuspid regurgitations, and sustained wide-complex monomorphic tachycardia (heart rate: 330 beats per minute), primarily consistent with ventricular tachycardia. Laboratory test results were unremarkable, except for an elevated serum concentration of cardiac troponin
