The structures of complexes of octahaem cytochrome c nitrite reductase from the bacterium Thioalkalivibrio nitratireducens (TvNiR) with the substrate sulfite (1.4 Å resolution; R(cryst) = 0.126) and the inhibitor cyanide (1.55 Å resolution; R(cryst) = 0.148) have been established. Such an effect might be reflected in changes in the resting metabolic rate (RMR) and formation of reactive oxygen species. Apoptosis has been described in some parasites like Leishmania, Trypanosoma, and Trichomonas. This phenomenon has not been observed yet in Entamoeba histolytica. Salmonella and Escherichia coli are two bacteria that are important causes of human and animal disease worldwide. Chlorate is converted in the cell to chlorite, which is lethal to these bacteria. An HPLC procedure was developed for the rapid analysis of chlorate (ClO(3)(-)), nitrate (NO(3)(-)), and nitrite (NO(2)(-)) ions in bovine ruminal fluid samples.
