Chemical approaches for detection and destruction of nerve agents.

Since the introduction of organophosphorus (OP) compounds as nerve agents and pesticides, methods of dealing with their toxicity to humans have been intensely researched. There are studies on sensing, pretreatments, prophylactics, antidotes and therapies. There is some overlap in all of these endeavors because they have to deal with the reactivity of the phosphorus atom in various contexts. The contexts range from large spaces, the thinly spread vapors in the air, to very small spaces in the active sites of enzymes - acetylcholinesterase (AChE) or butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) - that have reac

Place-Based Developmental Research: Conceptual and Methodological Advances in Studying Youth Development in Context.

Scientists have, for some time, recognized that development unfolds in numerous settings, including families, schools, neighborhoods, and organized and unorganized activity settings. Since the turn of the 20th century, the body of mainstream neighborhood effects scholarship draws heavily from the early 20th century Chicago School of Sociology frameworks and have been situating development in neighborhood contexts and working to identify the structures and processes via which neighborhoods matter for a range of developmental outcomes, especially achievement, behavioral and emotional problems, a

A key system response of diametric space as a paradigm for understanding the phenomenology of anorexia nervosa.

There is increasing recognition of phenomenological approaches to understanding anorexia nervosa (AN), interrogating lived experiences and voices of those diagnosed with AN. This article builds on phenomenological accounts of AN, taking a step further for a spatial phenomenology, to examine how specific central features of AN experience are structured in diametric spatial terms. Building on growing research on the phenomenology of AN, it is remarkable how consistently the phenomenology of AN clusters around structural features of diametric space, as reactive, compensatory coping mechanisms of

Exploring how hospital based green spaces support stroke rehabilitation: A mixed methods multiple case study protocol.

BACKGROUND: In-patient treatment and rehabilitation after stroke represent an important period for recovery, yet recommended levels of rehabilitation activity are challenging to achieve, and many patients remain inactive and at risk of low mood. Research in other conditions suggests that the use of green spaces can benefit in-patients, providing opportunities for activity and social interaction, and improving mood and wellbeing. However, little is known about the use of green spaces post-stroke. AIM: To explore how, for whom, and under what conditions hospital based green spaces influence rec

Environmental Carbon Dioxide and Temperature Effects on Sleep Quality During Space Analogs.

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms related to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations on the International Space Station are widely stated and researched. While microgravity contributes to the observed CO2 related symptoms, an additional factor that may contribute to symptoms associated with hypercapnia is the impact of environmental CO2 on sleep. Studies evaluating how the sleep environment impacts sleep quality in terrestrial environments have shown that slightly elevated CO2 concentrations can negatively impact deep sleep quantity. METHODS: CO2 concentrations in the crewmembers' sleep quarters an

Transcriptome tomography for brain analysis in the web-accessible anatomical space.

Increased information on the encoded mammalian genome is expected to facilitate an integrated understanding of complex anatomical structure and function based on the knowledge of gene products. Determination of gene expression-anatomy associations is crucial for this understanding. To elicit the association in the three-dimensional (3D) space, we introduce a novel technique for comprehensive mapping of endogenous gene expression into a web-accessible standard space: Transcriptome Tomography. The technique is based on conjugation of sequential tissue-block sectioning, all fractions of which are

Peri-flight Neuromusculoskeletal Injuries in Astronauts.

INTRODUCTION: The space sector is growing remarkably fast. Its value is expected to increase from $447 billion in 2022 to $2.7 trillion by 2040. The demand for astronauts and astro-civilians is growing, and there will be an increased need for experts who understand the effects of spaceflight on the neuromusculoskeletal (NMSK) system. Orthopedic specialists in space medicine are sparsely reported in the literature, and standards of care for astro-civilians are not well established. This review discusses the current prevalence of peri-flight NMSK injuries in astronauts, the role of orthopedic sp

Demonstration of charge-hold-vent (CHV) and no-vent-fill (NVF) in a simulated propellent storage tank during tank-to-tank cryogen transfer in microgravity.

The space exploration from a low earth orbit to a high earth orbit, then to Moon, Mars, and possibly asteroids and moons of other planets is one of the biggest challenges for scientists and engineers for the new millennium. The enabling of in-space cryogenic rocket engines and the Lower-Earth-Orbit (LEO) cryogenic fuel depots for these future manned and robotic space exploration missions begins with the technology development of advanced cryogenic thermal-fluid management systems for the propellant transfer line and storage tank system. One of the key thermal-fluid management operations is the

Combining Proteomics and Metabolomics to Analyze the Effects of Spaceflight on Rice Progeny.

Spaceflight is a special abiotic stress, the biological effect mechanism of which on contemporary rice has been clarified, However, its effect on offspring rice was still unclear. In order to understand the response mechanism of F2 generation plants to space flight, this study used SJ-10 recoverable satellite to carry DN423 rice seeds for 12.5 days in orbit flight. After returning to the ground, the plants were then planted to F2 generation to explore the biological effect mechanism. Our research showed that in the F2 generation of TLS, the rice plant height of the space flight group increased

Exposure to natural environments during pregnancy and birth outcomes in 11 European birth cohorts.

Research suggests that maternal exposure to natural environments (i.e., green and blue spaces) promotes healthy fetal growth. However, the available evidence is heterogeneous across regions, with very few studies on the effects of blue spaces. This study evaluated associations between maternal exposure to natural environments and birth outcomes in 11 birth cohorts across nine European countries. This study, part of the LifeCycle project, was based on a total sample size of 69,683 newborns with harmonised data. For each participant, we calculated seven indicators of residential exposure to natu

Evaluation of the Communication Between Arachnoid Cysts and Neighboring Cerebrospinal Fluid Spaces by T2W 3D-SPACE With Variant Flip-Angle Technique at 3 T.

PURPOSE: Phase-contrast cine magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) is a widely used technique for determination of possible communication of arachnoid cysts (ACs). Three-dimensional (3D) sampling perfection with application-optimized contrasts using different flip-angle evolutions (3D-SPACE) technique is a relatively new method for 3D isotropic scanning of the entire cranium within a short time. In this research, the usage of the 3D-SPACE technique in differentiation of communicating or noncommunicating type ACs was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five ACs in 34 patients were retrospec

Assessing Physical Activity in Temporary Spaces: Application of SOPARC / iSOPARC® for Play Streets.

Purpose: The System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) is a valid, reliable method for understanding how people engage in physical activity (PA) in various permanent settings (e.g., parks) and contexts. However, its utility, reliability, and validity in temporary spaces has not been examined. Temporary spaces can provide PA opportunities often absent in low-income communities due to inadequate safe permanent PA spaces. Play Streets involve temporary closure of streets or other publicly accessibly spaces (e.g., parking lots, open-fields) to create safe play spaces for a s

Nanotechnology enabled radioprotectants to reduce space radiation-induced reactive oxidative species.

Interest in space exploration has seen substantial growth following recent launch and operation of modern space technologies. In particular, the possibility of travel beyond low earth orbit is seeing sustained support. However, future deep space travel requires addressing health concerns for crews under continuous, longer-term exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Among these challenges, radiation-induced health issues are a major concern. Their potential to induce chronic illness is further potentiated by the microgravity environment. While investigations into the physiological effect

Questing Ixodes ricinus ticks and Borrelia spp. in urban green space across Europe: A review.

For more than three decades, it has been recognized that Ixodes ricinus ticks occur in urban green space in Europe and that they harbour multiple pathogens linked to both human and animal diseases. Urban green space use for health and well-being, climate mitigation or biodiversity goals is promoted, often without consideration for the potential impact on tick encounters or tick-borne disease outcomes. This review synthesizes the results of over 100 publications on questing I. ricinus and Borrelia spp. infections in ticks in urban green space in 24 European countries. It presents data on severa

Sketching a Space of Brain States.

Brain functional connectivity alterations, that is, pathological changes in the signal exchange between areas of the brain, are occurring in several neurological diseases, including neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric ones. They consist in changes in how brain functional networks work. By conceptualising a brain space as a space whose points are connectome configurations representing brain functional states, changes in brain network functionality can be represented by paths between these points. Paths from a healthy state to a diseased one, or between diseased states as instances of disease

Vowel production of Mandarin-speaking hearing aid users with different types of hearing loss.

In contrast with previous research focusing on cochlear implants, this study examined the speech performance of hearing aid users with conductive (n = 11), mixed (n = 10), and sensorineural hearing loss (n = 7) and compared it with the speech of hearing control. Speech intelligibility was evaluated by computing the vowel space area defined by the Mandarin Chinese corner vowels /a, u, i/. The acoustic differences between the vowels were assessed using the Euclidean distance. The results revealed that both the conductive and mixed hearing loss groups exhibited a reduced vowel working space, but

Effects of long-term fixation on histological quality of undecalcified murine bones embedded in methylmethacrylate.

While long-term fixation and storage of specimens is common and useful for many research projects, it is particularly important for space flight investigations where samples may not be returned to Earth for several months (International Space Station) or years (manned mission to Mars). We examined two critical challenges of space flight experimentation: the effect of long-term fixation on the quality of mouse bone preservation and the preservation of antigens and enzymes for both histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses, and how the animal/sample processing affects the preservation. We s
