OBJECTIVE: Obtain aerodynamic vocal measurements of dysphonic female teachers from two groups, before and after a brief and intensive short-term voice therapy using the finger kazoo technique, compare to the respective control groups, and compare between the two study groups.
STUDY DESIGN: A randomized blind controlled clinical trial.
METHODS: A randomized blind controlled clinical trial. Measurements of maximum phonation time and sound pressure level (dB SPL) were measured before and after intensive short-term vocal therapy in 24 teachers with and without structural laryngeal disorders and

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore how 7-year-olds describe speech in children born with cleft palate in their own words and to investigate whether they perceive signs of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) and articulation errors, and if so, which terminology they use.
METHODS/PARTICIPANTS: Twenty 7-year-olds participated in 6 focus group interviews where they listened to 8 speech samples with different types of cleft speech characteristics and described what they heard. The same speech samples had been assessed by speech-language pathologists and comprised normal speech, differen

Developmental dyslexia is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that is associated with alterations in the behavioral and neural processing of speech sounds, but the scope and nature of that association is uncertain. It has been proposed that more variable auditory processing could underlie some of the core deficits in this disorder. In the current study, magnetoencephalography (MEG) data were acquired from adults with and without dyslexia while they passively listened to or actively categorized tokens from a /ba/-/da/ consonant continuum. We observed no significant group difference in active c

As part of the frontotemporal dementias, primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is typically characterized by nonfluent speech with paraphasias, but there is growing evidence that also a fluent variant of PPA exists. We describe a patient suffering from PPA who adds to the broad clinical spectrum of this disorder. Moreover, we report for the first time that PPA may be associated with severe impairment in meaningful nonverbal sound recognition (environmental sound agnosia). These neuropsychological findings were found to be associated with distinct focal alterations in functional and structural neur

Stammering as a frequent speech disorder in infancy results from many causes. For instance, it is possible that a child with normal peripheral hearing may be unable to distinguish sounds by tone and therefore will repeat them incorrectly. A testing method is presented in which paired pictures are used which differ by the phonologic opposition of some stammered sounds. The results of the test in 100 children who stammer are reported. Further investigations give evidence that other perceptual disorders can be found in supposed agnosias.

The present study investigated the effect of fear on paralinguistic aspects of speech in patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia (N = 25). An experiment was conducted that comprised two modules: Autobiographical Talking and Script Talking. Each module consisted of two emotional conditions: Fearful and Happy. Speech was recorded digitally and analyzed using PRAAT, a computer program designed to extract paralinguistic measures from digitally recorded spoken sound. In addition to subjective fear, several speech characteristics were measured as a reflection of psychophysiology: rat

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) was found to improve oral and written naming in post-stroke and primary progressive aphasia (PPA), speech fluency in stuttering, a developmental speech-motor disorder, and apraxia of speech (AOS) symptoms in post-stroke aphasia. This paper addressed the question of whether tDCS over the left IFG coupled with speech therapy may improve sound duration in patients with apraxia of speech (AOS) symptoms in non-fluent PPA (nfvPPA/AOS) more than sham. Eight patients with non-fluent PPA/AOS received either active

Articulation disorders are deficiencies in the realization of speech sounds unrelated to organic or neurological disorders. Over the last decade, there has been a debate on the efficiency of non-verbal oro-motor exercises, which are orofacial movements programmed and organized in an intentional and coordinated way to control lips, tongue, and soft palate muscles. Of the 122 children evaluated, 52 presented articulatory difficulties. An intervention with nonverbal oro-motor exercises was applied, and children were again assessed following treatment. The results showed no differences between the

Evidence for subgroups among developmental phonological disorders based on etiological origins, as opposed to the alternative linguistic view of childhood phonological disorders as a learning problem of unknown origin, is presented. A three-parameter framework that arranges relevant individual differences (mechanism, cognitive-linguistic, and psychosocial) is proposed for study and classification of the phonological disorders. The disorders are studied in relation to developmental correlates and speech-sound normalization. This permits study of these variables in relation to severity and forms

AIMS: To evaluate maxillary dental arch dimensions in 6-year-old children with articulatory speech disorders and to compare their dental arch dimensions with age- and sex-matched controls without speech disorders.
METHODS: Fifty-two children (15 girls) with errors in the articulation of the sounds /r/, /s/ or /l/ were compared retrospectively with age- and sex-matched controls from dental casts taken at a mean age of 6.4 years (range 5.0-8.4). All children with articulatory speech disorders had been referred to City of Helsinki Health Care, Dental Care Department by a phoniatrician or a speec

This report reviews the existing literature on the emergence and prevalence of speech sound errors in older children and adults. Findings from several different sources suggest that 1 to 2% of the young adult population overall may present with these errors. Up to 75% of these errors may resolve on their own between the end of the developmental period (i.e., age 9 years) and the end of high school, though speech therapy services may still be justified to reduce any negative social consequences of these errors. At least two different sources of these errors are postulated. Residual speech error

Speech communication depends on accurate perception and identification of speech sounds, which vary across talkers and word or sentence contexts. The ability to map this variable input onto discrete speech sound representations relies on categorization. Recent research and theoretical models implicate the procedural learning system in the ability to learn novel speech and non-speech categories. This connection is particularly intriguing because several language disorders that demonstrate linguistic impairments are proposed to stem from procedural learning and memory dysfunction. One such disor

OBJECTIVE: To assess speech alterations in mouth-breathing children, and to correlate them with the respiratory type, etiology, gender, and age.
METHOD: A total of 439 mouth-breathers were evaluated, aged between 4 and 12 years. The presence of speech alterations in children older than 5 years was considered delayed speech development. The observed alterations were tongue interposition (TI), frontal lisp (FL), articulatory disorders (AD), sound omissions (SO), and lateral lisp (LL). The etiology of mouth breathing, gender, age, respiratory type, and speech disorders were correlated.
RESULTS:

Individuals with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience difficulties in perceiving speech in background noises with temporal dips; they also lack social orienting. We tested two hypotheses: (1) the higher the autistic traits, the lower the performance in the speech-in-noise test, and (2) individuals with high autistic traits experience greater difficulty in perceiving speech, especially in the non-vocal noise, because of their attentional bias toward non-vocal sounds. Thirty-eight female Japanese university students participated in an experiment measuring their ability to perceive speec

This clinical case describes the communication profile of a functional speech disorder. A 48-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency service due to sudden changes in speech, generalized dystonia and gait ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple supra and infratentorial inflammatory lesions involving the posterior occipito-temporal lobes bilaterally, frontal convexity bilaterally, insula and paramedian frontal cortex on the left, diencephalon, rhombencephalon. On the third day, a speech pathology evaluation was conducted, revealing inconsistencies in speech: repetitions of initia

BACKGROUND: Although many metrics for neurodevelopment in children with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis have been analyzed, few have directly examined early language acquisition and speech development. The authors characterized language acquisition and speech development in children with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.
METHODS: The authors' institutional database was queried for nonsyndromic craniosynostosis from 2000 to 2014. Patients with an identified syndrome were excluded. Specific data elements included age, gender, velopharyngeal adequacy by means of the Pittsburgh Weighted Speech Scale,

This article reviews the evidence for computer-based auditory training (CBAT) in children with language, reading, and related learning difficulties, and evaluates the extent it can benefit children with auditory processing disorder (APD). Searches were confined to studies published between 2000 and 2008, and they are rated according to the level of evidence hierarchy proposed by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 2004. We identified 16 studies of two commercially available CBAT programs (13 studies of Fast ForWord (FFW) and three studies of Earobics) and five further ou

Central auditory processing is essential for the perception of speech, environmental sounds and music, and may be deranged in two ways. Lesions of the ascending auditory pathway or cortex can produce deficits. Abnormal activity of the central auditory system is becoming increasingly recognized in disorders such as tinnitus. Recent work has investigated sound processing by the unconscious brain; such investigations may provide a 'window' into residual brain function and prognosis.

This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of developmental stage of the dentition on speech sound production in children with and without articulatory speech disorders. In the whole sample, there were 281 subjects, mean age 7.5 years (SD 0.4). The stage of the eruption of the permanent incisors was calculated as the percentage height of each tooth of the mean crown height of the corresponding tooth in a group of 252 young adults. Eruptional stage of the first permanent molars was classified into three categories. Articulatory disorders were diagnosed by one experienced speech therapi
