Multi-perpetrator domestic violence.

A significant proportion of reports of domestic violence against women involve multiple perpetrators. Although the number of perpetrators has been consistently identified as a measure of abuse severity, only a minority of studies of domestic violence examine the role of multiple offenders. Data on multi-perpetrator domestic violence (MDV) is frequently removed from analysis in domestic violence studies, or multi-perpetrator incidents are treated as single-perpetrator incidents. However, the available research links MDV to negative mental and physical health outcomes, intimate partner homicide,

Intimate partner violence: IPV in the LGBT community.

Nationally, the rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) individuals are similar to or greater than rates for heterosexuals. Many have experienced psychological and physical abuse as sexual minorities, making it difficult for them to seek help for IPV. Physician behavior, such as not assuming that all patients are heterosexual, being nonjudgmental, and using inclusive language, can empower LGBT patients to disclose IPV. Also, physicians should ascertain the degree to which the patient is out. The threat of being outed can be an aspect of the

Changes in negative attributions during couple therapy for abusive behavior: relations to changes in satisfaction and behavior.

This study examined effects of cognitive-behavioral couple therapy (n = 25 couples) and a variety of systems-oriented couple therapy models (n = 30 couples) in reducing negative attributions and degrees to which decreases in negative attributions were associated with improvements in other aspects of relationship functioning. Couples seeking treatment at a university clinic and experiencing psychological and/or mild-to-moderate physical abuse completed 10 weekly sessions. Attributions, relationship satisfaction, psychological abuse, communication, and negotiation were assessed before and after

[Evulsion of the optic nerve, a diagnosis to be recognised!].

INTRODUCTION: Evulsion of the optic nerve is a rare but serious injury. It occurs generally after an ocular contusion and may cause blindness. CASE: We report the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with a blunt ocular trauma after having been punched by her husband. Initial examination of the left eye was impossible due to a major palpebral oedema. A CT scan of the orbit revealed a thickened optic nerve. No improvement was noted. DISCUSSION: Optic nerve avulsion is often caused by sudden and forceful rotation of the eye with tearing of the optic nerve as its globe entry level. The dia

Domestic violence in rural Uganda: evidence from a community-based study.

Although domestic violence is an increasing public health concern in developing countries, evidence from representative, community-based studies is limited. In a survey of 5109 women of reproductive age in the Rakai District of Uganda, 30% of women had experienced physical threats or physical abuse from their current partner--20% during the year before the survey. Three of five women who reported recent physical threats or abuse reported three or more specific acts of violence during the preceding year, and just under a half reported injuries as a result. Analysis of risk factors highlights th

Intimate justice. III: Healing the anguish of abuse and embracing the anguish of accountability.

This article presents an exploratory approach to couples therapy for abuse based on intimate justice theory. The article explains "the accountability axiom," which brings the relationship between the anguish of abuse and the anguish of accountability into focus. Understanding the accountability axiom can help therapists simultaneously engage both the victim of abuse and the abuser by creating two therapeutic environments in conjoint therapy--one environment that affirms the victim and one that challenges the abuser. The ideas are based on a qualitative study conducted by the authors, and the a

Development of the Woman Abuse Screening Tool for use in family practice.

BACKGROUND: This study developed a screening tool for use by family physicians to identify and assess women patients experiencing emotional and/or physical abuse by their partner. METHODS: An initial set of eight questions developed for the Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) was completed by both abused and non-abused women. Participants were also asked to indicate their comfort in answering the questions in both research and family practice contexts. They also completed the Abuse Risk Inventory and a demographic questionnaire. Analysis of the WAST included 1) standard assessment of the validi

Psychological aggression predicts physical aggression in early marriage.

Psychological aggression by self and partner, physical aggression by the partner, and marital dissatisfaction were examined as longitudinal predictors of first instances of physical aggression during marriage. Subjects who were not physically aggressive at a premarital assessment were selected from a sample of 393 engaged couples. Couples participated in three subsequent assessments over the first 30 months of marriage. As hypothesized, individuals' own psychological aggression predicted their initial incidents of physical aggression in marriage. Psychological aggression by their partners also

Characteristics of domestic violence perpetrators with dementia from police records using text mining.

AIM: Few studies have examined the characteristics of domestic violence (DV) committed by people with dementia. We provide an overview of DV perpetrated by people with dementia in the community based on police reports of attendances at DV events. METHOD: A text mining method was used on 416,441 New South Wales (NSW) police narratives of DV events from January 2005 to December 2016 to extract information for Persons of Interest (POIs) with mentions of dementia. RESULTS: Events involving those with dementia accounted for a relatively low proportion of total DV events (<1%). Of the 260 DV event

Marital infidelity and intimate partner violence in rural Malawi: a dyadic investigation.

Extramarital sexual partnerships are a common reason for intimate partner violence (IPV) in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the fact that IPV requires an interaction between two partners, the majority of the research focuses on individuals rather than the broader relationship context where such violence takes place. Using a sample of 422 married couples from rural Malawi, this study examined the dyadic environment of marital infidelity and two types of IPV victimization: sexual coercion and physical abuse. We considered both self-reported marital infidelity and perceived partner infidelity to asse

The prediction of child maltreatment in Greek families.

OBJECTIVE: The study had two aims: First, to identify characteristics of physically maltreating families in the Attica region of Greece; and second, to produce a checklist of high risk predictors which may be used for screening, as an assessment, to enable secondary prevention of physical abuse and neglect. METHOD: A case control design was used with individual matching. The sample comprised 197 physically abused and neglected children and their families referred to a multidisciplinary team. These were compared with 163 control children and their families attending a community health center.

Human immunodeficiency virus infection in sexually active wives of infected hemophilic men.

PURPOSE: Because of past multiple exposures to contaminated coagulation factor concentrates, the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among adult hemophilic men in the United States is reported to range from 75 to 90 percent. The risk of HIV transmission through a long-term monogamous heterosexual contact can be estimated by studying the spouses of hemophilic subjects since these couples generally do not abuse intravenous drugs, usually maintain stable monogamous relationships, and are usually free of other risk factors. Our purpose was to gather data on the risk of heter

Patient presentation, angiographic features, and treatment of strangulation-induced bilateral dissection of the cervical internal carotid artery. Report of three cases.

Domestic violence leading to strangulation by an abusive spouse can cause carotid artery dissection. This phenomenon is rare and has been described in only three previous instances. The authors present their management strategies in three additional cases. Three young women aged 24 to 43 years were victims of manual strangulation committed by their spouses 3 months to 1 year before presentation. Two of the patients suffered delayed cerebral infarctions before presentation and angiography demonstrated focal, mirror-image severe residual stenoses in the high-cervical internal carotid artery (ICA

A dyadic analysis of the influence of trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder severity on intimate partner aggression.

This study used structural equation modeling to evaluate a mediation model of the relationship between trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and perpetration of intimate partner physical and psychological aggression in trauma-exposed veterans and their cohabitating spouses (n = 286 couples; 88% male veteran and female spouse, 80.8% White, non-Hispanic). Dyadic data analyses were used to simultaneously evaluate actor and partner effects using the actor-partner interdependence model (Kashy & Kenny, 2000). The primary hypothesis was that PTSD would mediate the associatio

Chronic conditions in children increase the risk for physical abuse - but vary with socio-economic circumstances.

AIM: To explore whether children (age 10, 12 and 15 years) with self-reported chronic conditions are at higher risk of physical abuse and/or exposure to intimate-partner violence than other children, while considering the importance of demographic factors. METHODS: A national cross-sectional study of 2771 pupils in grades 4, 6 and 9 from 44 schools in Sweden (91% response rate). Conflict Tactic Scales were used to measure physical abuse and separate questions measured exposure to intimate-partner violence. A list of 13 diagnoses was used to estimate chronic conditions. RESULTS: Children with

Exploring the relationship between childhood maltreatment and intimate partner abuse: gender differences in the mediating role of emotion dysregulation.

Despite evidence that childhood maltreatment is associated with increased risk for intimate partner abuse perpetration, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Given literature suggesting that violent behaviors may serve an emotion regulating function, this study examined the mediating role of emotion dysregulation in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and intimate partner abuse perpetration among 341 male and female undergraduates. However, given evidence of gender differences in the underlying mechanisms of intimate partner abuse, emotion dysregulation was ex

Family violence in the military: a review of the literature.

Foot ulceration is a prominent cause of diabetes mellitus morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This is an observational study in which 47 consecutive diabetes mellitus patients with foot ulcers were studied over a 2-year period. Each patient's medical history, physical examination findings, and hematological and radiological features were documented. The mean age of the patients was 56 (11) years. The majority of the patients (40, 85%) had type 2 diabetes mellitus; 25% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were diagnosed when they presented with foot ulceration. Grades 2 and 3

Partner abuse among women whose children have been sexually abused: an exploratory study.

To explore partner abuse among women in families in which a child has disclosed child sexual abuse, 102 mothers completed a measure of partner abuse and the Coping Responses Inventory. Results suggest that, like women in the general population, mothers of children who have been sexually abused have often experienced partner abuse. As expected, physical abuse in a current relationship was found to be related to the use of avoidance strategies in dealing with the sexual abuse disclosure. The implications for practitioners and for future research are discussed.

The association of parental alcoholism and rigidity with chronic illness and abuse among women.

BACKGROUND: This study determined whether women in a primary care practice who described one or both of their parents as alcohol dependent (group A) or harsh, rigid, or difficult (group B) were more likely to have chronic illness than women who denied having parents with these characteristics (group C). METHODS: A consecutive sample of 120 women scheduled for comprehensive physical examinations were interviewed to determine parental characteristics, demographic data (age, education, employment, and marital status), and clinical information (chronic illness and lifetime surgeries).
