BACKGROUND: Inversion ankle sprains, or lateral ankle sprains, often result in symptomatic lateral ankle instability, and some patients need lateral ankle ligament reconstruction to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent subsequent injuries. Although anatomically reconstructed ligaments should behave in a biomechanically normal manner, previous studies have not measured the strain patterns of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) after anatomical reconstruction. This study aimed to measure the strain patterns of normal and reconstructed ATFL and CFLs u

OBJECTIVES: To assess within-player change in injury risk and between-player subsequent injury risk associated with concussive and common non-concussive injuries in professional rugby union.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study in Welsh professional male rugby union analysed within-player and between-player injury risk for five common injuries: concussion, thigh haematoma, hamstring muscle strain, lateral ankle sprain and acromioclavicular joint sprain. Survival models quantified within-player injury risk by comparing precommon (before) injury risk to postcommon (after) injury risk, whereas

Injuries sustained while playing Ultimate at six tournaments between 1986 and 1990 were recorded. Thigh muscle strains, ankle ligament sprains and skin abrasions/friction burns were the most frequent injuries. Factors contributing to injury include pitch state, player fitness and preparation, clothing, 'lay-out' technique, tournament organization and squad size. Reducing excessive playing time, improved preparation by the player, sensible use of protective clothing, and care with pitch selection should all lead to a reduction in the number of injuries.

Injuries that required physical or medical assistance were recorded for participants at the United States Tennis Association National Boys' Tennis Championships from 1986-1988, 1990-1992 (N = 1440, 240 athletes per year). Over the 6-yr period, a total of 304 athletes (or 21.1%) sustained new or recurrent injuries that required evaluation by the medical team. New injuries alone numbered 145 (incidence rate of 9.9 per 100 athletes). The analysis of injuries showed a higher rate of lower than upper extremity injuries. When evaluated by anatomic regions, back injuries were most common followed by

OBJECTIVE: Myotendinous strains, contusions, and hematomas are common injuries in American football. Along with ligament sprains and inflammatory disorders, musculoskeletal injuries often result in lost participation time. This article summarizes 18 years of experience with 128 ultrasound-guided drainages and injections in 69 football players with 88 injuries.
CONCLUSION: When performed by an operator with sufficient expertise in diagnostic and procedural skills, ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal interventions are minimally invasive, are safe, and can play an integral role in injury managemen

Back pain in children is a common problem that is infrequently reported to physicians. Persistent back pain in children is serious, and most conditions can be diagnosed with relatively simple tests, including diagnostic plain radiographs and bone scans. Many cases, including strains and sprains, are relieved with rest and decreased activity. If persistent back pain, increasing pain, fever, or neurologic deficit is present, referral to the orthopedic surgeon should be swift until a specific cause can be found and treated.

Hypermobility of joints and spine is a consequence of abnormal laxity of ligaments, joint capsules and intervertebral discs. Hypermobility per se is a state, not a disease. However, it may lead to generalized arthralgia or localized symptoms (frequent ankle sprains, knee effusions, dislocations of the shoulders of recurrent episodes of back pain). These events may occur even after minor strains. Young women are preferentially affected. The term "hypermobility syndrome" is defined as a combination of hypermobility with arthralgia, low back pain, frequent dislocation or sprains. It is often the

Foot and ankle injuries in baseball provide unique challenges to the provider. Most foot and ankle injuries (ie, ankle sprains and contusions) can be managed non-operatively using a similar approach as in other athletic populations, but a few unique mechanisms of injury in baseball are important to be aware of. While upper extremity injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears and labral tears are extensively reported on in the literature, there is a need for further baseball-specific research on foot and ankle injuries, especially given the increasing prevalence of these injuries ov

The joints of the fingers play an important role in prehension. They must accomplish both great mobility in the sagittal plane to allow the fingers to roll up and great stability to ensure the grip is both precise and firm. The collateral ligaments and palmar plates are the main passive stabilizing structures between the interphalangeal (IP) and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints. Sprains with or without dislocation of the proximal IP joints of the fingers are common injuries in sports pathology and may involve not only the ligaments but also their bony insertion on the phalanges or extensor ten

INTRODUCTION: Ankle sprains are common injuries within the civilian and military populations, with lingering symptoms that include pain, swelling, giving-way, and a high likelihood for recurrence. Numerous bracing systems are available to stabilize the ankle joint following sprains, with new design iterations frequently entering the market. Currently available braces generally include sleeve, lace-up, and stirrup designs. Sleeves provide mild compression and warmth but limited stability for the ankle, while lace-ups and stirrups appear to be more effective at preventing and treating lateral an

Lateral ankle sprains are a commonly incurred injury in sports. They have a high recurrence rate and can lead to the development of persistent injury associated symptoms. We performed a quantitative synthesis of published case reports documenting the kinematics of acute lateral ankle sprains and episodes of 'giving-way' of the ankle joint to provide a comprehensive description of the mechanisms. A systematic literature search was conducted to screen records within MEDLINE® and EMBASE®. Additional strategies included manual search of specific journals, as well as contacting researchers in relev

Primary care physicians are often the first to evaluate patients with extremity injuries. Identification of fractures and sprains and their proper management is paramount. After appropriate imaging is obtained, immobilization and determination of definitive management, either nonoperative or operative, is critical. Appropriate immobilization is imperative to injury healing. Nonsurgical management of upper extremity fractures often uses slings, short-term splinting, gutter splints, and/or short or long arm casts. Initial fracture stabilization of the lower extremity is usually accomplished with

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the burden of knee, hip, and lumbar spine disorders occurring in the year after an ankle sprain and the influence therapeutic exercise (TE) has on this burden.
METHODS: A total of 33,361 individuals diagnosed with ankle sprain in the Military Health System between 2010 and 2011 were followed for 1 yr. The prevalence of knee, hip, and lumbar care-seeking injuries sustained after sprain was identified. Relationships between demographic groups, ankle sprain type, and use of TE with rate of proximal injuries were evaluated using Cox proportional hazard mod

Tug-of-war (TOW) is an internationally played activity including professional and amateur athletes, defined as early as 4000 years ago (as a rope-less version) in the artwork on Egyptian tomb engravings, and is played as per the rules laid out by TWIF, which has 73 member countries and administrative headquarters in the USA. Typically, two teams of "pullers" participate and apply enormous contra directional forces on the pulling rope. Originally, two types of competition are used: knockout and points. This narrative review describes the scientific state of the art of TOW. To the best of the au

BACKGROUND: To prevent recurrent ankle sprain, it is important to clarify the pathology of chronic ankle instability (CAI). An association has been reported between CAI and abnormalities of foot posture and ankle alignment. There is no consensus on the types of these abnormalities that occur in individuals with CAI. The objective of this systematic review is to clarify the relevance of abnormality of foot posture and ankle alignment for CAI.
METHODS: A systematic computerized literature search was performed of the PubMed, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Register of Clini

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent ankle sprains are common in soccer players, characterized by restricted range of motion, pain, and decreased proprioception, strength, and postural control. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a fascial therapy and strength training program, combined with kinesiotaping, in improving ankle range of motion, pain, strength and stability in footballers with recurrent sprains.
METHOD: A simple blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on soccer players. Thirty-six federated footballers were recruited and randomized to the two study groups. The experimenta
