Management of wounds in a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) caused by traumatic bycatch injury from the spines of a spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari).

A subadult female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was caught in a trawl net off the west coast of Florida with a spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) spine lodged in the left stifle. Surgical removal of the spine was performed and antibiotic treatment was initiated. Four weeks later, endoscopy revealed a second spine entering an intestinal lumen. The fistulous tract of the left prefemoral fossa was surgically excised and the intestinal perforation was repaired. Dehiscence occurred and a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) system was used on the wound for approximately 18 days to help reduc…

Comparison of tibial anatomical-mechanical axis angles and patellar positions between tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) and modified cranial closing wedge osteotomy (AMA-based CCWO) for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease in large dogs with tibial plateau slopes greater than 30° and clinically normal Labradors retrievers.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate tibial anatomical-mechanical axis angles (AMA-angles) and proximodistal and craniocaudal patellar positions following tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) and AMA-based modified cranial closing wedge osteotomy (CCWO) in large dogs with tibial plateau angle (TPA) > 30°, to compare these postoperative positions with those of a control group of healthy normal dogs, and to assess which procedure yields postoperative morphology of the tibiae and stifles that is most consistent with that of the unaffected group. This study also investigate…

Arthroscopic assessment for patellar injuries and novel suture repair of patellar fracture in a cat.

A 4 yr old spayed female domestic shorthair was evaluated for an acute, nonweight-bearing, left hind limb lameness. Following 2 wk of conservative management without clinical improvement, the patient was referred for further examination. The stifle was palpably enlarged with suspected periarticular fibrosis. Radiographs showed a lateral longitudinal patellar fracture as well as a medial patellar luxation. Arthroscopic examination of the stifle and repair of the patellar fracture and luxation were performed with an excellent clinical outcome. Nine weeks postoperatively, the owners reported that…

Repeatability and precision of a weighted centroid method for estimating dynamic in vivo tibiofemoral surface interactions in sheep.

Persistent changes in joint biomechanics resulting from knee injury are thought to contribute to progressive cartilage damage and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). The identification and quantification of in vivo tibiofemoral surface interactions are critical to understanding them, particularly abnormal interactions that are damaging to articular cartilage and other structures of the knee. In this study, we describe an approach for understanding such potential interactions by using a weighted centroid derived from in vivo stifle kinematics in sheep. Collectively, repeatability and sensitiv…

Surgical resolution of an avulsion fracture of the peroneus tertius origin in a giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata).

A 4-mo-old, 185-kg male giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) was presented due to stifle effusion and lameness of 3-wk duration. Radiographs revealed a fracture of the extensor fossa of the lateral trochlear ridge of the femur at the origin of the peroneus tertius. Under anesthesia, dysfunction of the reciprocal apparatus was documented by flexing the stifle while the tarsus remained extended. An avulsion fracture of the origin of the peroneus tertius and extensor digitorum longus muscle was diagnosed. An exploratory arthroscopy of the femorotibial joint was followed by arthrotomy to ex…

[The arthrographic presentation of the hip, knee and tarsal joints of the cat].

The purpose of the present paper was to find out the most suitable localizations to puncture of hip, stifle and hock joints of the domestic cat. These joints are arthrographically presented. Further six contrast mediums in normal commercial usage were tested with regard to there contrast intensity. The only recommendable localization to arthrocentesis of the hip joint is at the cranial border of the greater trochanter of the femur. The stifle joint is approachable either at the medial or lateral border of the Lig. patellae. To puncture the proximal row of the hock joint the recommendable punct…

Canine Pelvic Limb Model is Valid for Teaching Veterinary Students to Assess Cranial Cruciate Ligament Stability.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is the most common canine orthopedic condition and can be diagnosed by eliciting a cranial drawer sign upon examination. However, teaching students to identify this finding is dependent upon caseload and can cause discomfort to a patient. Simulation offers a benign, perpetually available method of teaching students to evaluate stifle stability. This study sought to create and validate a canine stifle model using a validation framework consisting of content evidence and evidence of a relationship with other variables (level of training). The stifle model …

Caudal cruciate ligament disease in three Basset Hounds.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 adult Basset Hounds were referred for evaluation of chronic, unilateral, pelvic limb lameness with no history of trauma. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On examination, all dogs had mild lameness of the affected limb; signs of pain were evident during manipulation of the stifle joint in the affected limb, along with effusion of that joint. No stifle joint instability was palpable. Radiographs were available for review for 2 of the 3 dogs. Effusion was confirmed radiographically, but severity of degenerative joint disease varied. Central intercondylar notch width ratios for the 2 dogs w…

Short-term outcomes of cranial cruciate ligament rupture treated surgically with tibial plateau leveling osteotomy or non-surgically in small-breed dogs weighing less than10 kg.

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is a common cause of stifle joint pain in dogs. This study assessed the short-term outcomes in the management of CCLR, with or without concurrent medial patellar luxation (MPL), in small-breed dogs, comparing surgical intervention using tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) with non-surgical approaches. Dogs weighing less than 10 kg and suffering from CCLR were divided into two groups: surgical and non-surgical (nine stifles per group). Both groups followed the same rehabilitation protocol. Measurements were taken on days 0, 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 8…

Evaluation of meniscal and articular cartilage lesions in femoral and tibial condyles in dogs without cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency: cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: The menisci of the stifle joint are essential for impact absorption, joint stability, and load support. Meniscal injuries, particularly of the medial meniscus, can lead to osteoarthritis and are generally associated with cranial cruciate ligament instability. Lateral meniscal injuries are less frequent. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of medial or lateral meniscal injuries and cartilage lesions on the tibial and femoral condyles in cadaveric dogs with intact cranial cruciate ligaments, and to correlate the meniscal injuries with the tibial plateau angle and the …
