Ventral marsupialisation in the treatment of gastric dilatation-volvulus in two dogs.

A ventral marsupialisation technique is described which was used successfully to manage gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) in two large breed dogs. The procedure allowed the stomach to be completely and rapidly emptied and lavaged without peritoneal contamination. Drainage was maintained in the postoperative period for both dogs and the technique was expected to result in a permanent ventral gastropexy.

[Gastric volvulus disclosing diaphragmatic hernia].

A case of gastric volvulus resulting from the migration of the stomach and the transverse colon into the right thorax via the Larrey or Morgagni foramen is reported. The anatomy of the Morgagni foramen and a brief description of the resulting hernias is presented. This rare hernia is usually occurs as a complication or during examinations. Surgical treatment is relatively simple via the abdominal route.

Bochdalek's hernia in adults: A unique case with gastric volvulus and intrathoracic kidney.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORATNCE: Introduction: Bochdalek's hernia (BH) is a congenital diaphragmatic hernia predominantly diagnosed in the pediatric population but infrequently found in adults. This paper presents a unique case of an adult patient with a left-sided BH accompanied by gastric volvulus and an intrathoracic kidney. CASE OF PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. An MDCT scan revealed a twisted stomach, spleen, and kidney herniated into the chest due to left diaphragmatic eventration. Surgery involved untwisting the stomach, relocating the organs,

Updated Information on Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus and Gastropexy in Dogs.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is an acute, life-threatening syndrome of dogs, particularly large and giant breeds with a deep chest conformation. Rapid diagnosis is important for prompt initiation of stabilization therapy and surgical correction. Negative prognostic factors include hyperlactatemia not responding to fluid therapy, gastric perforation, or need for splenectomy or gastric resection. Gastropexy is essential for all dogs affected by GDV, following correct gastric repositioning. Prophylactic gastropexy for at-risk breeds can be performed via minimally invasive laparoscopic su

A case of triple volvulus.

Situs inversus is a rare congenital anomaly that has reportedly been associated with caecal volvulus. We describe a case of partial situs inversus complicated by intestinal obstruction secondary to three simultaneously occurring volvuli of the stomach, caecum and sigmoid colon. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case in the literature of multiple, simultaneously occurring volvuli.

Transient left ventricular and stomach apical ballooning syndromes: when the trigger is also a clinical emergency.

A 59-year-old woman was referred to our emergency department because of epigastric pain and incoercible vomit. Electrocardiogram showed ST-segment elevation in anterior-lateral leads, but coronary angiogram revealed normal coronary tree and left ventricular angiography showed apical and midventricular akinesis with preserved basal systolic function: a diagnosis of apical ballooning syndrome was made. During the following days, the patient complained about persistent abdominal pain, and a nasogastric tube drained more than 1000 cc of dark fecaloid material. Urgent abdominal computed tomography

Paraesophageal hernia and gastric volvulus: an uncommon etiology of vomiting and upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

The authors report the case of a 75 year-old woman admitted to the emergency room with abdominal pain and coffee ground vomiting. Marked epigastric distension with tenderness and signs of severe dehydration were present. Upper GI endoscopy showed a black esophagus covered by a large amount of dark fluid, diffuse hyperaemia and superficial erosions. Marked distortion of gastric anatomy caused by stomach rotation and a large paraesophageal hernia was observed and the pylorus was not identified. Chest X-ray and CT scan confirmed the presence of an organoaxial gastric volvulus with antero superior

Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus and Heartworm Disease in a Dog With Situs Inversus.

A 7-year-old spayed female bloodhound was evaluated due to concern for gastrointestinal obstruction. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen with mild cranial abdominal discomfort on palpation. Thoracic radiographs revealed cardiac silhouette enlargement with a "D"-shaped appearance and pulmonary arterial distension. Abdominal radiographs revealed a gas-distended stomach with craniodorsal displacement of the pylorus in the left lateral projection. Heartworm disease was diagnosed via the SNAP heartworm antigen test. Situs inversus totalis with concurrent gastric dilatation and volvulu

A massive hiatal hernia that mimics a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. An unusual presentation of hiatal hernia in childhood: report of a case.

A massive hiatal hernia containing the colon, intestine, and stomach with organoaxial volvulus is an uncommon entity in childhood. This clinical form of a hiatal hernia may mimic congenital diaphragmatic hernia and chest pathologies. In this paper, we describe a patient who presented with a massive hiatal hernia that mimicked a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and discuss the pitfalls in diagnosing this clinical entity.

Comprehensive Review: Acute Esophageal Necrosis in the Setting of Gastric Volvulus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) in the setting of gastric volvulus is a rare condition with only a handful of cases reported. Volvulus may contribute to AEN by limiting tissue perfusion and promoting massive reflux of gastric contents on compromised esophageal mucosa. METHODS: We reviewed 225 original articles, literature reviews, case series, brief reports, case reports, and discuss six total cases of co-occurring esophageal necrosis and gastric volvulus. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We present the first comprehensive analysis of all reported cases in the literature to date

Evaluation of a staged technique of immediate decompressive and delayed surgical treatment for gastric dilatation-volvulus in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a staged technique of immediate decompressive and delayed surgical treatment for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) in dogs. ANIMALS: 41 client-owned dogs with confirmed GDV from 2012 through 2016. PROCEDURES: Medical record data were collected regarding patient signalment, diagnostic test results, gastric lavage findings, surgical findings, and short-term survival status. For all dogs, gastric decompression was performed by orogastric intubation and gastric lavage in the same anesthetic episode. If this stage was successful, subsequent corrective surgery (laparotomy an

Parahiatal hernia with gastric obstruction in a child.

Parahiatal hernia refers to herniation of abdominal viscera into the chest adjacent to an intact hiatus. Spontaneously occurring parahiatal herniae are extremely rare. We report a 4-year-old boy who presented with intermittent vomiting and had such a hernia, where the herniated stomach had undergone partial volvulus. He was symptom-free after surgical repair.

Gastric Volvulus: A Multidisciplinary Approach and Conservative Treatment.

Gastric volvulus can be defined as an abnormal rotation of the stomach. It can be both an emergency and a chronic intermittent problem. Being such a rare clinical entity and a difficult condition to diagnose, it is commonly diagnosed at the time of surgery or even at autopsy. We present the case of an 82-year-old independent female with a past medical history of hiatal hernia, who came to the emergency department with hematemesis and severe epigastric pain. An abdominal CT scan revealed an organoaxial stomach volvulus within the intrathoracic cavity. After initial treatment with gastric decomp

Gastric volvulus after ventricular assist device explantation and cardiac transplantation.

Diaphragmatic herniation has been recognized as a complication of unrepaired diaphragmatic defects after left ventricular assist device explantation and cardiac transplantation. We believe this to be the 1st report of diaphragmatic herniation that resulted in gastric volvulus in a cardiac transplant recipient. The presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of this potentially fatal condition are discussed herein. Nine months after removal of a Thoratec HeartMate II left ventricular assist device and orthotopic cardiac transplantation, the patient presented with intermittent upper abdominal and low

[Gastric volvulus, an infrequent cause of acute abdominal pain].

Gastric volvulus (GV) is characterized by the abnormal rotation of a portion of the stomach around a horizontal or vertical axis that can cause obstruction, vascular disorder and even strangulation, and may evolve into necrosis or even perforation. It can be classified according to its aetiology into primary or secondary GV, according to its anatomy into axial organ or into axial mesenteric GV, and according to its presentation into chronic or acute GV. Both types of volvulus require treatment; however, in spite of the classic treatment being open surgery, there is no standard treatment, nor i

Gastric volvulus--a late complication of gastrostomy.

Two cases of gastric volvulus are reviewed. Both patients were nonverbal, mentally handicapped children, who were fed through a gastrostomy. They had intermittent intolerance to bolus feeds through the gastrostomy, accompanied by abdominal distension and vomiting of gastric contents. One had a previous partial fundoplication and gastrostomy, and the other had had two pyloroplasties and gastrostomy. The axis of torsion ran from the esophagogastric junction to the gastrostomy site. Both children were treated by detorsion and gastropexy. It is postulated that the gastrostomy served as a fixed poi
