Status of Strongyloidiasis in Japan, 2000-2017.

We reported 865 cases of soil-transmitted nematodiasis occurring in Japan during 2000-2017. The predominant nematode was Strongyloides stercoralis (n = 279, 32.3% of all cases), and other species included Ascaris lumbricoides (30.7%), Trichuris trichiura (23.1%), and Ancylostomidae spp. (13.9%). Strongyloides stercoralis was detected primarily in patients in Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures, which are in the south of Japan and are endemic areas for this parasitic infection, and also in about half of the prefectures of all Japan. At least 15.5 cases of strongyloidiasis occurred on average each

[A disseminated strongyloidiasis in a non immunocompromised patient].

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitosis mainly located in tropical and subtropical regions. Its European incidence is increasing due to population migration. The symptomatology is variable, largely depending on the host immune status. The diagnosis may be challenging as a specific inquiry is needed. The disseminated status, called hyperinfection syndrome, is a life-threatening disease that might occur in immunosuppressed patients. The patient's chances for a successful outcome depend on a quick and specific management. The treatment is based on anthelminthic agents such as ivermectine or albendazole

[Intestinal strongyloidiasis in a psoriasis patient with diabetes].

This case study underlined the importance of parasitological examination before starting immunosuppressive treatment since a heavy burden of strongyloidiasis could lead to fatal infections. It represents the first strongyloidiasis from a patient with psoriasis and diabetes mellitus in this country. In the case, 59 years old female subject had psoriasis for six years and during the treatment with topical corticosteroid and anti-psorial medication, psoriatic lesions flared up. The patient had constipation and foul smelling stool complaints. Blood tests showed an increase in eosinophil and a decr

Strongyloidiasis: a review and update by case example.

UNLABELLED: A 77-year-old female immigrant from South America presented with epigastric pain, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, malabsorption, and acid reflux disorder. A gastroduodenoscopy, performed to assess for peptic ulcer disease, revealed parasitic larvae in the duodenal mucosa which were subsequently identified as Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditiform larvae. Anti-helminthic therapy was initiated to resolve infection. OBJECTIVES: Review the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of strongyloidiasis; alert laboratory professionals to the importance of early detection of Strongyloide

Strongyloidiasis: a review of the evidence for Australian practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: To summarise the available evidence concerning the prevalence, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and management of strongyloidiasis in Northern Australia. METHODS: We searched Medline, Clinical Evidence and the Cochrane Library using MeSH terms and text words 'strongyloides OR strongyloidiasis'. For Australian studies we included text words '(parasite* OR parasitic OR helminth*) AND Australia*'. We examined references contained in retrieved studies or identified from direct contact with researchers. Studies consistent with our objective that described their methods were eligible f

Strongyloidiasis in children five years and below.

INTRODUCTION: Strongyloidiasis is one of the major human intestinal infections caused by a minute nematode, Strongyloides stercoralis. It is a soil-transmitted nematode of worldwide distribution, which resides in the small intestines of humans and is acquired by tissue penetration by the infective stage, filariform larva, of the worm. In the immunocompetent hosts, Strongyloides stercoralis infects only the mucosal of the small intestines and persists as an asymptomatic often chronic infection. In contrast, in the presence of immune suppression it has ability to multiply within the human host,

A case of gastric strongyloidiasis in a Korean patient.

A 69-year-old Korean man was admitted to emergency room with complaints of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Laboratory tests revealed eosinophilia, anemia, hypoproteinemia, and hyponatremia. The gastric mucosa showed whitish mottled and slightly elevated lesions on the body angle of antrum. Microscopically, chronic gastritis with incomplete intestinal metaplasia was observed. Many adult worms, larvae, and eggs in cross sections were located in the crypts. Furthermore, the filariform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis with a notched tail were detected through the culture.

Endemic strongyloidiasis on the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

Diagnosis and treatment of Strongyloides stercoralis infection can be difficult, and a high degree of clinical suspicion in patients who have visited an endemic area is required. We describe the epidemiology and clinical features of 152 prospectively identified cases of strongyloidiasis in an European region, and identify risk factors for the development of severe forms of the disease. This was a prospective study of all patients admitted to a single institution over an 8-year period. Patients (n=152) were mainly elderly male farmers (79%) who had acquired the disease by working barefoot in co

[A case of strongyloidiasis accompanied by duodenal ulcer].

A 58-year-old chronic alcoholism patient, who complained of epigastric discomfort, nausea, and frequent loose stool was diagnosed as strongyloidiasis accompanied by duodenal ulcer. The symptoms first appeared two years ago and aggravated during the recent 3 months, and he lost 4 kg of his body weight. Stool examination revealed rhabditoid nematode larvae, which were confirmed as those of Strongyloides stercoralis after cultivation of them to filariform larvae. At duodenoscopy, duodenal ulcer was found. The patient was treated with albendazole (200 mg, bid, for 14 days) for strongyloidiasis and

[Strongyloidiasis prevalence in the subtropics of the Azerbaijan SSR].

The Berman technique was used in the authors' modification for strongyloidiasis survey of 18212 persons in various areas of Azerbaijan. It was stated that with the height increasing up to 500 m over the sea surface the infestation with strongyloidiasis increased and varied between 5.7 and 9.3 +/- 0.1%. At the height of 500-1500 meters the value decreased up to 3.5 +/- 0.1% and at the height of 2000-2400 meters was the lowest one (2.2 +/- 0.1%). The investigation revealed that the disease foci could appear not only in the plains or foothills but in mountainous and high-mountain areas of the Aze

Immunoblot analysis of antibodies in human strongyloidiasis.

An electrophoretic transfer technique was used to investigate qualitatively the production of antibodies to Strongyloides stercoralis larvae in 56 patients with strongyloidiasis. SDS-PAGE analysis of the larval extract revealed the presence of at least 33-39 polypeptide bands under either reducing or non-reducing condition. In the immunoblot analysis, almost all patients showed positive reactivity to the polypeptide bands. The reactivity, however, revealed significant variation among the patients, ranging in number of bands from only one to more than 18. Among the bands, 4 with molecular sizes
