A longitudinal study of children exposed to sulfur oxides.

This study is a longitudinal comparison of the health of children exposed to markedly different concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and moderately different concentrations of particulate sulfate (SO4=). The four groups of subjects lived in two areas of one smelter town and in two other towns, one of which was also a smelter town. In the area of highest pollution, children were intermittently exposed to high SO2 levels (peak three-hour average concentration exceeded 2,500 micrograms/m3) and moderate particulate SO4= levels (average concentration was 10.1 micrograms/m3). When the children wer…

Cardiopulmonary responses to inhaled sulfur dioxide in the chicken.

Selected cardiopulmonary variables were measured in anesthetized, male, White Leghorn type chickens before, during, and after 60 min exposure to various inhaled SO2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 5000 ppm. In one series of experiments, birds breathed through their nostrils and mouth; in a second series they breathed through a tracheal cannula. Exposure to 5000 ppm SO2 rapidly caused death in all birds with cannulated tracheae and in 4 of 5 birds with an intact respiratory system; one bird in each series of experiments died when exposed to 1000 ppm. Inhaling 100 ppm SO2 did not alter heart ra

Solubility and reactivity of sulfur dioxide in various oils.

Physical-chemical interactions of SO2 and soluble particulate matter have been documented in the potentiation of acute respiratory effects in animals. The possible role of such interactions between SO2 and oils will be examined similarly. By a simple electrochemical technique, the solubility of SO2 in various oils (including motor oils) could be isolated from the chemical reactions. Except for the medicinal mineral oil, large differences in both solubility and reactivity were found among the oils. In these oils, far more SO2 reacted than dissolved.

Met32 governs transcriptional control of sulfur metabolic flexibility and resistance to reactive sulfur species in the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans.

UNLABELLED: Although considerable advances have been made in understanding the metabolic machinery that enables bacteria to utilize sulfur sources, our understanding of the corresponding processes in fungi remains comparatively fragmentary. To explore the genetic circuit by which the highly prevalent human opportunistic yeast Candida albicans controls sulfur utilization, we characterized the transcriptional landscape associated with sulfur starvation in this fungus. We identified many desulfonation enzymes that were differentially modulated and showed that Jlp12, a sulfonate/α-ketoglutarate di…

Rapid analysis of sulfur mustard oxide in plasma using gas chromatography-chemical ionization-mass spectrometry for diagnosis of sulfur mustard exposure.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is the most utilized chemical warfare agent in modern history and has caused more casualties than all other chemical weapons combined. SM still poses a threat to civilians globally because of existing stockpiles and ease of production. Exposure to SM causes irritation to the eyes and blistering of skin and respiratory tract. These clinical signs of exposure to SM can take 6-24 h to appear. Therefore, analyzing biomarkers of SM from biological specimens collected from suspected victims is necessary for diagnosis during this latent period. Here, we report a rapid, simple, and…

Analysis of low concentration reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) in air: storage issues and measurement by gas chromatography with sulfur chemiluminescence detection.

Reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) were measured at low concentrations in small volume air samples using a cryo-trapping inlet system and gas chromatograph outfitted with a sulfur chemiluminescence detector (GC-SCD). The relative sensitivity of the system to the RSCs follows the sequence H(2)S<CH(3)SH<OCS∼DMS<CS(2). The analytical system achieves a detection limit of 120ppt in a 100mL air sample, which is suitable for measuring reactive RSCs (e.g., H(2)S and CH(3)SH) at ambient or near ambient atmospheric concentrations. The inlet system allows for replicate sampling from a stored air sample (sub…
