A case report on a full-thickness chest wall reconstruction with polypropylene mesh and stainless steel mesh concurrently using a transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap.

A full-thickness chest wall resection requires subsequent chest wall reconstruction. A chest wall resection and reconstruction was performed using a transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap, together with polypropylene mesh (Marlex mesh) and stainless steel mesh (SSM). A 71-year-old man was diagnosed as having recurrent lung cancer in the chest wall, and underwent surgical resection. Marlex mesh was sutured to the posterior wall of the surgical defect. A portion of the SSM was adjusted to the size of the defect and cut out. Its edges were folded to make the portion into a plate. Th

Case-matched series of a non-cross-linked biologic versus non-absorbable mesh in laparoscopic ventral rectopexy.

PURPOSE: Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVR) is an emerging technique for selected patients with rectal prolapse and obstructed defaecation syndrome. Data are insufficient to conclude which type of mesh affords the greatest benefit. Our aim was to compare the outcomes of LVR using a non-cross-linked biologic versus a permanent mesh. METHODS: Twenty nine cases of LVR with permanent mesh were matched based on age and surgical indication with an equal number of patients using biologic mesh. Cases were retrospectively reviewed from a prospectively maintained database. Symptom resolution, pa

The use of biological mesh to repair one large, contaminated abdominal wall defect due to neoplastic invasion. Report of a case.

We hereby report a case of use of biological mesh to repair one large, contaminated abdominal wall defect due to a sigmoid tumour presented as an abscess infiltrating the abdominal wall. Our patient was a 48-year-old woman. Her medical history was negative for any previous disease or surgical procedure. Because of the abscence of neoplastic secondarism an en-bloc resection of the interested sigmoid colon and of the infiltrated abdominal wall was performed, thus resulting a large wall defect in the left inguinal region. In order to close the wall defect a biological porcine collagen mesh was us

Migration of a mesh into the colon after inguinal hernia repair - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mesh migration is one of the least common complications that arise after inguinal hernia repair with a mesh. Only small case series have been reported, and an understanding of this issue is limited due to a lack of data. Most of the cases were treated surgically. In this paper, we wish to present the potential of treating this condition using endoscopic techniques. CASE REPORT: A male patient underwent transabdominal preperitoneal repair of a primary inguinal hernia in 1999. In 2003, the patient required the same procedure for a recurrent inguinal hernia. Twenty years after the

Advantages of implantation of acellular porcine-derived mesh in the treatment of human rectocele - Case report.

INTRODUCTION: A rectocele is a hernation of the rectum into the vaginal lumen developing as a consequence of weakness of the rectovaginal septum. It affects about 18% of women after childbearing age. Symptoms associated with a rectocele include constipation, vaginal fullness or heaviness, feeling of a bulging mass within vagina, incomplete stool evacuation and dyspareunia. Current methods of surgical treatment of a rectocele often require implantation of a mesh graft. In most of cases, synthetic and non-absorbable meshes are used. Although implantation of a synthetic and non-absorbable mesh is

Clinical outcomes of oncologic hernia repair using Poly-4-Hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) mesh.

INTRODUCTION: Hernia repair following cancer surgery is often challenging due to prior radiation therapy, malnutrition, and immunosuppression. Poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) is a biosynthetic mesh that balances strength and biocompatibility, potentially optimizing outcomes in this high-risk population. This study aimed to evaluate recurrence and surgical site complications associated with P4HB mesh in oncologic patients undergoing incisional hernia repair and to identify surgical techniques related to improved outcomes. METHODS: Patients with previous oncologic abdominal or pelvic surgery who

Protocol for the mesh matters project: evaluating the efficacy of suture mesh vs. planar mesh in small ventral hernia repair - a randomized, blinded multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Small ventral hernia repair is among the most performed general surgical procedures. Despite the routine use of planar polypropylene mesh, surgical site occurrences (SSO) remain a frequent cause of morbidity, readmission, and patient dissatisfaction. A novel mesh-suture integrates mesh reinforcement with suture-like implantation and may reduce subcutaneous dissection and tissue trauma. The aim of this randomized trial is to investigate differences in SSO, patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and operation time among patients operated for small ventral hernias either with this novel mesh-

Mesh Migration into the Neobladder and Ileum with Complicated Fistula Formation following Incisional Hernia Repair.

BACKGROUND: Tension-free repair using mesh has become the standard treatment for abdominal wall incisional hernias. However, its postoperative complications reportedly include mesh infection, adhesions, and fistula formation in other organs. Here, we report an extremely rare case of mesh migration into the neobladder and ileum with entero-neobladder and neobladder-cutaneous fistulas. Case Presentation. An 80-year-old male who had undergone radical cystectomy 5 years ago and abdominal wall incisional hernia repair 3 years ago presented with fever and abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) sca

[Tension-free procedures in the surgical treatment of groin hernias].

Hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States, with 700,000 operations performed each year. Improvements in surgical technique, together with the development of new prosthetic materials and a better understanding of how to use them, have significantly improved outcomes for many patients. These improvements have occurred most notably in centers specializing in hernia surgery, with some institutions reporting failure rates of less than 1%. In contrast, failure rates for general surgeons, who perform most hernia repairs, remain significantly higher. Th

Effect of Poly-L-Lactic Acid Mesh Augmentation on Cyclic Gap Formation in Transosseous Patellar Tendon Repair: A Biomechanical Study.

No previous study has investigated poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) surgical mesh augmentation in the repair of inferior pole patellar tendon rupture. We compared the biomechanical properties of transosseous patellar tendon repair with PLLA surgical mesh augmentation to transosseous repair without augmentation. Ten matched pairs of cadaveric knees were used. Specimens in each pair were randomized to undergo the transosseous technique alone or the transosseous technique augmented with a PLLA surgical mesh. An inferior pole patellar tendon rupture was simulated and the repair procedure was performed. S…

Antagonism of Interleukin-17A ameliorates experimental hepatic fibrosis by restoring the IL-10/STAT3-suppressed autophagy in hepatocytes.

BACKGROUND: An increasingly vocal movement of patients with systemic complaints, supposedly linked to polypropylene mesh implants, is leading to increasing numbers of patient-preferred mesh-less surgical repairs for inguinal hernia, stress urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. However, current literature does not support any association between polypropylene implants and Autoimmune Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA). This prospective pilot aims to examine autoimmunity in patients in whom ASIA is suspected, based on previously described criteria. We aim to demonstrate the effective
